Well, that's true. Actually the whole thing is kind of ick...with or without a family connection. My favorite part of the "date" is the reaction of Joe, Maggie, and Sam as in a when the heck did that happen and what in the name of all that is good and holy is she thinking? kind of way.

Personally, I've always thought an even more famous film inspired the Barnabas/Maggie storyline: does the name VERTIGO ring a bell?

Well, yes. Because I referenced that in the above post  [ghost_wink]

Actually, I was thinking less about Maggie and more about Vicki....

Calendar Events / Announcements '09 I / Influence on DS?
« on: June 24, 2009, 03:11:00 AM »
Yes, it's me. I'm back. Sort of.

Anyhow, I've been hunting down every movie I can find with Eric Portman in it and screened this very recently. It's an odd movie. Wealthy eccentric artist spots bored young socialite and is instantly taken with her (and vice versa). He insists on living in an anachronistic manner (house lit by candlelight, servant asked to wear Dickensian kind of garb). They play some rather odd dress up games (not like that  [ghost_wink]). He's convinced they are the reincarnations of two former lovers. Spoiler-laden review here.  Lot of interesting similarities to DS.  A portrait that looks just like the heroine. Special room that he has just for her, etc. Couple of people have posited that the writers of the novel on which Vertigo is based might have been influenced by this as well.

I've only been able to find a copy on VHS and the print is awful, but I loved this.  Very much worth hunting down....

Oh and Christopher Lee and Lois Maxwell have very tiny parts in it.

I like that idea about Roger figuring it out, Nelson Collins.  It works for a number of reasons, and would be very like Roger.

Here's another idea though:  what if we play it the other way, and she's ROGER'S daughter, perhaps by Betty Hanscomb.  I remember seeing that idea somewhere, and turning it over a few times without finding anything that shot it down.

That gets pretty weird if you go down that road. Especially since at one point he dates Vicki....not that it worked out too well...

Current Talk '08 II / Re: DS VS Star Trek? Why So Little Respect For DS?
« on: November 29, 2008, 12:56:45 AM »
Here are my guesses....
1. Easier for new viewers to see Star Trek. I had heard of DS long before I saw it. Trek has been on and airing on some station or another (and not merely cable) for most of my life. And I remember watching reruns of Trek way before the movies were even conceived of.
2. Easier for new viewers to "get" Star Trek. You can watch one episode and have a sense of who the characters are and what the show is about.
3. Stigma of the soap opera format. Trek was a prime time show.
4. Higher production values on Trek. I'm not a Shatner fan and I am aware that Trek is by no means a perfect show, but in terms of lack of bloopers, production values, all around continuity, it beats DS hands down. As charming as some of us find DS' imperfections, average viewer is going to think more highly of Trek.
5. Relatively decent SF pedigree in terms of story and writing.

If you are talking fandoms, I'm not sure what you mean, because people have been making fun of Trekkies for a VERY long time.

FYI, I personally prefer TNG, DS9, and Voyager to the original Trek, but I don't think I'd consider myself all that rabid a fan...

Eh. I think part of his behavior is because he very much sees himself as a Collins from Collinsport. He behaves the way he does because he thinks he's entitled.  The locals might despise him, but they probably would be loathe to do it to his face.

I'm going with middle of the road, bear in mind that middle of the road today is very different from middle of the road back then...

Current Talk '08 II / Re: Mitch Ryan as.....Jeremiah?
« on: October 31, 2008, 03:06:01 PM »
Do Jeremiah and Millicent even share any scenes together at all?  I recall Joshua talking to Jeremiah about trying to get them together, but I don't remember if they even ever actually meet onscreen.  It seems like subplot died almost before it was born.

I'm pretty sure they do---at least one big one. I believe they are introduced and it's clear there is no way that it would be a viable marriage. I kind of love Barrett as Millicent. She is such a flake.

I am not an Anthony George fan. I didn't like him as Burke and I loathed him as Jeremiah. I've said this before but the way he played Burke it was like his ultimate ambition was to live in a house with aluminum siding.

When Mitchell Ryan played Burke, his chemistry with Moltke was good. Burke comes to town with a whole other agenda. He's ruthless when playing Carolyn against her family, trying to manipulate others, etc., but he's totally disarmed with Vicki. He brought a lot of complexity to the part. He's particularly good with Diana Millay.

Anthony George's Burke on the other hand is borderline abusive with Vicki. He lectures and rants on her sanity a lot. There's very little chemistry there and his performance is rather one note.

I suspect if Ryan had been around for 1795 his part would have been a bit different, but I think he would have brought a lot to the table.

On another note--I continue to find it hysterical
that after being shot in a duel, his injuries require him to be bandaged like Boris Karloff in the Mummy. And also that the family can't even put the guy in a coffin. They toss him in the ground with a shroud over him.
Current Talk '08 II / Re: a lavender menace
« on: October 27, 2008, 10:38:48 PM »
This is probably as good a place as any to ask this question: why is lavender associated with homosexuality?  I'm curious.

I think it's associated with lilacs--the color and the fact that lilacs are considered to be especially feminine flowers. I read that somewhere but can't remember where at the moment. Aren't violets also associated with it as well?

Usage goes back quite far as far as lavender goes....the OED puts it at 1929 (Cole Porter song). Several other references from the 30s and 40s...

Current Talk '08 II / Re: What were they thinking?
« on: October 16, 2008, 04:38:23 PM »
I actually think the 1795 arc was pretty tightly written (the awfulness that was Peter Bradford aside). It solved a number of problems. It was extremely well acted. It gave the actors a chance to do something different. It is fascinating to me to see how refreshed and energized most of them were. Also--and I think this is key--there seemed to be a game plan on the part of the writers. They had some kind of an outline they were following, compleat with exit strategy. The other arcs lack that. 1897 in particular gets kind of weedy around half way through. There was so much going on and it just got longer and longer. I have always had a sense that the writers were reacting--either to fan response or the directives of Curtis. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's like they weren't as in control as they were in 1795.

As for Josette and the early history of the family, you could go nuts trying to make that all work with what we learn later.
