This is a great thread. Thanks for starting it. I'm really curious if anyone has a story about when they actually heard that DS was going off the air. When was that announced and where was it reported? What was it like watching the show knowing it was going off the air? I've heard all the explanations for DS' demise, but what was actually the word at the time?

Current Talk '08 II / Re: DS VS Star Trek? Why So Little Respect For DS?

What is ironic about all this is that Dark Shadows and Star Trek were both on at the same time in the late 60's. DS was wildly popular, so well know that even people who didn't watch it had heard about it. Star Trek was mostly unsuccessful, as far as ratings go, I think. If you had asked anyone in 1968-69 what is the more popular show, it would have been DS hands down. But syndication does strange things. Shows like the Odd Couple and the Honeymooners were much more popular in syndication than they ever were when they originally aired. That's what happened with Star Trek.

Bummer. I agree it should have been left in. Anyone know why it's missing?

I thought I would respond to the above comments with my own two cents. I've attended two fests (not this year.) I think much of what has been written above is true, even by those who seem to be disagreeing with each other. It is true that the stars sell their items, make money and have their expenses paid for to boot. Not a bad deal at all. So there is truth that the appearances, as someone said above, are not 100% "noble" and contain some self interest. It's not all out of the goodenss of their hearts. And as someone else said, we poor or middle class fans, have to pay a ton of money to get there, hotel, dvd's and lots of monetary support over the years. All true.

But on the other hand, my own experience has been that the DS actors are some of the nicest, most gracious and personable people you can ever meet. That's not something that can be faked. If they came across as only snobs who were doing it for the money, that would be one thing. But they don't. So I really think they're great people. If they were not making money would they still come because they just love us fans so much? I don't know, but the fests are great times. We should enjoy them for what they are.

Adamsgirl, you are a true voice of reason!! As are Midnite, Profstokes and MagnusTrask.

It is very uninformed to say time travel is a "non-issue" and that physicists have a "but who cares" attitude about it. And who might those physicists be? That's like saying a brain surgeon has a "but who cares" attitude about the heart or lungs. Nothing negates that time travel is verified by the laws of physics. I also agree with MagnusTrask that it's arrogant to assume what kind of technology will or will not happen in the future, to state that something "can never" be invented.

I have read the book but have not seen the presentation. Adamsgirl, Midnite and Profstokes have all said the raised questions were addressed in the presentation. I know for a fact they were addressed in the book. Einstein and Hawking both take the issue very seriously. Ronald Mallett of the University of Connecticut is currently devoting himself to the issue, as are physicists Kip Thorne, J. Richard Gott, Jim Al-Khalili and more.

I agree with Adamsgirl that you should read "The Physics of Dark Shadows" available at culturalstudiespress.com. I also agree with Adamsgirl's description of the book as easily laid out for the average person to understand. Very enjoyable, especially for Dark Shadows fans.

I am still hoping for the presentation to appear on youtube, if possible.

Me, too, Teresalita!!

Actually, while the above comments on time travel are interesting, it seems that profstokes is the only poster who actually SAW the presentation and read the book. I was looking for feedback on it because I read "The Physics of Dark Shadows" and was unable to make the fest. What's interesting is that the above skeptics are the very types of comments that Frank Borzellieri writes about in the book. He writes (and acording to profstokes, said on Sunday) that people being people, will always doubt an idea like space travel, time travel, etc. until it actually happens. It doesn't defy the laws of physics. So time travel is not a non-issue, at least not according to Einstein and today's leading physicists.

I hope the presentation winds up on youtube.

Thank you profstokes for your information on the presentation. I could not go to the festival this year but I've enjoyed the posts about all the events. I read the book "The Physics of Dark Shadows" and heard Frank on the Coast to Coast radio show, so I was especially interested in his time travel speech. As you say, maybe he'll give it next year.

I was hoping someone would put it on youtube so I could see it.

I was wondering if anyone at the festival and on this board saw the time travel presentation on Sunday by Frank Borzellieri.

It's interesting how in HODS the same premise was given as to why Julia was staying at Collinwood - doing research on the history of the Collins family. The only difference was in the movie she was REALLY doing it - it wasn't a cover story.

Tad,
I agree with what you said about Frank's book (so far) but not with your terible accusation toward me :) By the way, should you be on line while you're supposed to be working??

Thanks for the information about the book and the radio show, Frank. I'll be ordering the book this weekend. I noticed the great reviews you've gotten here.

I'll also try and listen to the radio show tonight. Sounds very exciting.

I also want to welcome Frank! Thanks for the info. I'd love to have all the autographs including ProfStokes and Kathryn too but won't be able to make the festival this year. How can I get all three autographs? I checked the website to order and it only says signed by the author. Adamsgirl, I do remember Frank too from a festival a few years ago. He was cute, sexy.

I watched part of the rant and I agree that it shouldn't have been put out in this manner. Now I know not to buy it. I've always been amazed at the thought processes of those who put together these DVD releases. Seems to be no sense or consideration. Why bother?

That's great news. I missed it first time around. Is there a young version of David?

Excellent analysis, Lydia. I am recalling this episode from memory and this is not the first time Angelique claimed to be sorry, will change, and so on. When Jeremiah's ghost was haunting her she swore to Ben that she wouldn't hurt people any more. That lasted about two episodes. I'm also torn about what Barnabas should do.
