Current Talk '02 II / Re: Dark Shadows: Special Edition DVID

<<<I was a bit disappointed with the Nancy Barrett segment of the DS DVD special edition.   The sound of her voice was off sync with her mouth movements throughout the entire program, as if they re-dubbed her lines in the studio later on.  I know this was not the fault of the DVD, because I have the VHS tape of this and it is off sync too. >>>

This is in fact what they had to do.  When they taped Nancy on location - they did not account for the sound quality.  Nancy went to a recording studio in Chicago after the footage was shot to  reloop her dialogue with what she shot on location.

I just wanted to say that I was really amazed at the quality of the new DS DVD's.  I am really new to the whole DVD format, but I know from speaking to Jim Pierson that MPI was really involved in cleaning up these prints before they were transferred to MPI.  I saw the cover art for the next set coming out at the festival - and I think it's really cool.  I love the whole spooky woods ~ menu scenario!  :)  I think it is really creative and is fun to watch.  Call me simple LOL  ;) but I think MPI has done a great job with the DVD's.  I understand that there are problems with some DVD players and from everything I have read here - it sounds like it happens elsewhere and is a problem experienced when using this format.

My two cents for the day~~~~  8)

Exit "lurking" mode ~~  :P

Hi  :D

This was my 9th festival.  I have attended all of the festivals since 1994, as well as, many of the one-day DS trips including DS day in Tarrytown, NY ~ DS dinner at the Le Bar Bat in NYC, and also last year's NODS Anniversary showing in LA.  I really enjoyed this festival as it was more intimate and not as crowded as the NY festivals since to be each year.  This was my second year for volunteering at the information desk which was fun.  I also was fortunate to be asked to assist Marie Wallace at her table when she was needed elsewhere at the festival, and also assisted her with escorting her to her room when she was done selling her photos and prints.  I really enjoyed listening to Jeanne Avery talk about David's life and career.  David's character on DS has always been my favorite and it was a real treat to hear the "missing pieces" as to how his life and career has turned out.

I guess while I have exited the "lurking" mode I should also introduce myself, my name is Dean - and I am original fan of DS.  My sister used DS as a babysitting tool to keep my attention when I was a little kid - by placing me in front of the tv - so she could do her homework.  I loved the show then, and I still do to this day.  In 1977, DS aired on our local PBS station, and showed the introduction of Barnabas up until her was ready to kill Dr. Woodard - then it was gone! POOF!  :-[

I hated math as a teen - and so it was also about that time while taking a math class - that my math teacher learned from a parent-teacher conference with my mother that I loved DS.  We found out that my math teacher's sister (who was in her 40's at the time) also loved the show and had collected all of the DS Marilyn Ross novels.  So, a deal was struck - as long as I could pass my math tests each week - she would borrow the DS novels from her sister and allow me to read them.  Well, needless to say, I passed my math class with flying colors all the while - reading all of the DS Marilyn Ross Novels.  ;D

In 1989, I started collecting the DS MPI tapes while living in Chicagoland.  Funny thing, I never looked closely at the back of the DS VHS tape jacket and noticed the DS Festival information - until 1993 when I purchased a copy of KLS, DS Companion.  I sent away for information - and then joined a fanzine called the DS Collectible Classifieds.  It was through the fanzine that I met Bobubas and after a lunch at Chili's Restaurant ~ looking at his scrapbooks and purchasing a few DS Marilyn Ross novels from him as well - I attended my first DS festival in LA in 1994.   :)

I have also been fortunate to sponsor two Jonathan Frid shows in my hometown in 1999 & 2001.  Both were extremly fun to sponsor and have the opportunity to bring Jonathan to the Midwest for fans to see his one-man shows.

I continue to enjoy the DS Festivals each year and fandom.  I rarely post to boards, but do enjoy reading everyone's comments.

~~ now back to LURK mode ~~~  ;)

I purchased both the DS Special Edition DVD & the new four-pack DS DVD's from Suncoast Video Store - and had no problems playing them on both my PC which has a DVD drive or my Toshiba DVD player.

I would suggest you might want to contact MPI and let the customer service representative know about this problem that you are having.

Just a suggestion.

Well, as usual, I loose "all control" on my DS collectible spending at the festival. . . . .this is an annual occurance for anyone who knows me ~ a brief rundown includes,
many, many photos from Jay Nass - also some original fan club stuff from him including the official Alexandra Isles fanclub bookmark, official fan club memberships cards from Donna Wandrey & Joan Bennett fan clubs,
a couple of buttons including the Bobubas Anaheim 2002 button ~~ extra calendars, festival programs, two charity auction items, original 1991 DS stationary and enevelopes from MGM, the last Famous Monsters magazine to have an interview with Lara Parker, a HODS souvenir mug, and a rather rare find for my collection.  There was a woman who was selling off her DS collection and had some rather rare items including the original 1968 Barnabas glo-glo poster (which she had professionally framed) and she had a rather obscure piece which turned out to be something that I never knew existedl.  In 1968, when the pink gum cards came out - retailers got mini-posters which they could display in the window - well, I was aware of these posters, because I have one in my collection, but she had one that was a little different. In turns out, she had happened to be in the store on the day the distributor for the DS pink gum cards were stocking the shelves.  He gave her not only the WE HAVE IT pink gum card poster - BUT a variation on this poster which to my knowledge, NO ONE ever knew existed.  Needless to say, my mouth opened and my chin hit the floor when I examined this piece  :o - which she had also had pro framed on acid-free backing.  SO, I dropped a chunk of change down on this piece - but again - this may now be one of the rarest pieces in my collection.  ;D

I think that does it - oh yes, I also picked up a Pomegranate Press portfolio from a dealer which had 8x10 photos and information about KLS company which was issued when the DS Companion came out a few years ago.

Thank goodness, the festival only comes once a year, LOL, but then again, there's always ebay <sigh> :-/

I spoke with Jim Pierson a few weeks ago and he indicated that the DS Memories VHS & DVD will not come out until right around the time of this summers DS Festival. Probably will premiere at the festival and then be available from MPI thereafter.
