The topic remains locked, but I'm responding as a site admin.
Bob, I'm obviously a fan or I wouldn't have put time and effort (and expense) into moderating this site through all its incarnations... BTW, your description of discussions here following 9/11 was very touching. I've attended multiple Fests since I first learned about them-- it came on the TV while I was packing a school lunch for my daughter who is now an adult professional, sigh-- and I can honestly say that they've enriched my life so very much for the friends I've made. During the years in which there was no event, I still managed to get together with a core group of DS friends which usually involved travel. Since one in my group is a teacher, the trips usually happen in the summer months, though I never once worried about the weather being unsuitable for our wanderings (and occasionally it was nicer than home in Southern Cal.) Or about the expense because seeing my friends is always worth it. Sometimes I travel with a walking cane, but that doesn't stop me.
It seems likely that big DS events may soon be a thing of the past, which makes me feel sad for the younger (much more than you and I) fans who have come to the show now that it's readily available to be seen and enjoyed.
The Lyndhurst estate relies on private events, same as Greystone in Beverly Hills. But I find DS Festivals in general to be pretty economical. I've never been to any other official gathering that didn't charge for autographs. As has been said, if there's an activity that would bust one's budget, then of course it should be avoided. I've collected series memorabilia because it's meaningful to me and not because I'm following a crowd, so please don't insult me by calling me a lemming for my enthusiasm for DS. And patrickm, shush please with the attacks-- they don't help.
I've been critical of KLS in the past for varying reasons, but I also acknowledge that she's done much to honor the show beyond the profit she has made from it. Full disclosure: I am not and have never been in a business relationship with the woman. Also, you've also caught me in a vulnerable moment after she personally acknowledged a recent loss I've had; it was kind of her to do so. But regardless, the personal attacks on her that I read here are just out of line, period. Though this thread addresses her, I would be embarrassed if she read some of the comments in this thread.
A decision hasn't been made as to whether this topic will be unlocked, or when, but please know that any further personal attacks and nastiness toward the actors or each other will be promptly removed and repeat offenders may find their Forum privileges revoked.
