Current Talk '07 I / Re: Discuss - Ep #0212

I never noticed this the first time watching it, but Liz really gave Barnabas the 3rd degree. She wanted to know everything about him. I guess that's normal for family meeting each other the first time back in the day? I would have let it come out naturally. Not in the rush all at once like Liz did. I do like this scene though. I love the emotion both Joan and Jonathan gave during the performance.

Did anyone else notice how there wasn't a ring on Barnabas' left hand? When watching these episodes, I always notice how the hand that came out from the coffin had a ring on it yet when we see Barnabas he doesn't wear his ring on that hand. Just a rewind moment like they do on N@N.

Recent case in point:
Beloved character Grace Bennett (Dana Sparks), written out in 2004.
Brought back last month amid much fanfare.
Grace spent her entire month back on the air TALKING ON THE PHONE.
There was no onscreen reunion with her loved ones.
Then, she was killed with no warning!!!!
Fans were pissed!!!!!!

James Reilly was warned publicly by NBC to improve the show, but he ignored the network.
A shame.
Because Passions had SO MUCH potential.
Remember the mad adventures of Tabby & Timmy, Zombie
Charity, the Angel Girl, Miguel and Charity in Hell, etc

Grace is the character I'm talking about. Her character didn't know the first 20 years of her life. That story should have been explored more before killing her off. Plus throughout the shows run it says her and her daughters have powers yet they haven't gone into that any further. They dropped everything that was interesting for women getting raped, becoming hookers, doing drugs, killing people, it's just stupid now. The first 3 years of this show are the best episodes ever made.

I've been following this story for over a week now. When I read JER was warned about Passions being canceled if he didn't improve it, the first thing that popped in my mind along with other fans was that he was still bitter over being fired from Days. He ruined that show and that's why NBC had him canned. Now that they have a professional in his place as headwriter I read that the ratings have gone up and it's becoming watchable again. I stopped watching it a few years ago after the serial killer storyline. I didn't care for how JER finished that. Everyone who died, ended up alive on an island.

It's odd to hear that NBC wants out of soaps. With all that space during the middle of the afternoon, what the hell are they going to air? TALK SHOWS?

Not to mention the fact that I'm outraged that ABC is going to cut OLTL down to a half hour show. BOO! I never liked AMC--too goody goody for me--

I guess you didn't hear about the extra hour for the Today Show uh? That's where the hour is going to go when Passions ends its run. That will be 4 hours of The Today Show now.

I love AMC. It's the only soap opera on right now that I watch. That's why I'm upset by this news and the news that ABC wants to add an extra hour of their morning show which could lead to the cancellation of one of their own soaps. That's why I'm saying the soap genre is going out because of all these stories going on. With Passions cancellation turning out true, I'm betting the latest one with GMA will be too.

has it got any better as of late? i'm just curious.

Nope. Lately it's just been women characters getting raped. One character got raped twice from what I read. I don't like the change the show took when the actor that played the doll died in real life. They dropped all of the supernatural storylines over the years and that's why ratings kept going down. That's why it's not different anymore. Passions is a stupid, slow pace soap opera that was begging to be canceled. Well now that it has, I hope the real actors / actresses move onto better things. I hope they don't try to stay in the soap opera business because it looks like soaps are becoming a thing of the past.

BTW, they still have storylines from day one of the show still going on. And with the cancellation and the death of a former main character recently, it doesn't look like her story will get to be completed. They had great potential when it started, they just didn't go with it.

4
What should have been a joyous occasion has turned into a black day in soap history. I hate to say it, but all those Passions fans were right. Its cancellation has caused trouble for other soap operas. You know what really sucks about all of this? The creator of Passions knew his show was going to be canceled if he didn't improve it because NBC warned him and still he did nothing. He didn't care because he was still bitter about being fired from Days of Our Lives. NBC wants out of the soap opera business so in 2009 Days will be going to either ABC or CBS and when that happens another soap opera will be canceled for Days to take its place. Word has it ABC daytime really wants that show.

Here is my favorite line from Mrs. J. as she picks up Jason's hat and coat from the table - "Nobody hangs up a thing around here!"

That's my favorite part from the episode. She gives us the impression that they are a tad messy in that house.

I like the caretaker at the cemetary. They wrote his part perfectly. He makes them seem haunted and scary. The actor did a great job. The indroduction of Barnabas at the end of the episode was a good cliffhanger. However, does anyone else think Barnabas waited to long to yell out to Mrs. Johnson that he was Barnabas Collins? By the time he yelled that out to her, I would have already imagined that she was in the hall way almost to Liz's door. It doesn't take that long to go up the stairs and into the hall way.

I wish I could agree...but since I don't watch most of the other Soapnet soaps (Like Port Charles or Days of our Lives, or even Dynasty, which I DID watch in it's first run), and those shows on Soapnet don't inspire me to watch them, why would I expect DS to attract new viewers, via Soapnet?  Just my opinion again....

Well it's working on me. I never would have gotten into DS if Sci-Fi hadn't shown it and if SoapNet wouldn't be airing reruns of Port Charles, I wouldn't have gotten into that either. A show in reruns can gain a new audience. Just because it doesn't work for you, doesn't mean it wont work for others. BTW, this week on Port Charles is the beginning of the vampire arc. The 12 PM airings. I read a little bit of the story through recaps and I have to say it sounds exactly like Barnabas and Josette. Livvie reminds Caleb the vampire of a girl he was once in love with and now thinks she is the reincarnation of this woman. Same thing with Maggie and Barnabas. I'm still going to check it out, but I know it wont top DS version.

Why oh why couldn't Joan and Dennis be a couple on this show? Am I the only one that thinks these two are great together? I love this side of Joan, where she is feisty and has spunk. Vicki was alright, a little blah. I too wish Dan would have let Alexandra play a villain. She probably would have been more entertaining. Good characters become stale after a while.

Does anyone know if that was Jonathan Frid in the coffin at the end of the episode or was it an extra they used until the next episode to introduce Barnabas?

This is great!  I wish I'd hadn't put the start date so far into the future, but it would confuse matters unnecessarily to change it now.

I'm kind of glad you did set it for a later date. I'm in the middle of finishing up two shows right now. Are we going to do this on all of the Barnabas episodes, or just the ones you listed in the first post? If we do all the episodes, it would be neat if sometime in the future we could do two episodes a day. It'll be like watching DS on regular TV again. Fans watching and then coming to the forums to talk about it.

Anybody else interested?

I'm gamed. I haven't watched my DS DVDs in a long time. I need something to get me back into them and this will be fun.

Regarding SoapNet. I read on another forum that Santa Barbara is going to the channel this July. It's supposed to replace Dallas. I don't know if it's a rumor or if it's actually happening, but people seem to believe it's true. I would like to see the show people claim was the best soap during its run.

Mind if I put my two cents worth in here?

NEVER, EVER pre-judge anything you haven't already seen by the comments of other people.  Not even those of the truly die-hard DS fans we have around here.

The only opinion of the show (or any part of the show) that should matter to you is your own...and you can't make up your own mind until you actually SEE it for yourself.

I agree with this. A lot of DS fans dis the Leviathan storyline causing new fans to dread seeing that while I think it's a great storyline. It was new and different. Plus I thought it was exciting in some scenes. The only thing I hated about it was that it is the last storyline to feature Marie Wallace in the show.

I never saw the 1841PT storyline until I bought the last DVD collection and so far it's quite dull. They should have had one of the regular characters in this story. It might have been better.

thirdratehack, I'd recommend the online discussions on Buffy forums about the show's Season 4 because I'm confident that if you check them out, you will find intelligent, thoughtful discussion, and that its devotees run the age gamut.

And in fact, a simple search of these Forums (the Search feature is our best kept secret ;)) should reveal that many DS fans are also into Buffy.  Like Satan, I thought the characterization of its fans as mindless teenagers was unfairly harsh.

Adam is my least favorite of the Buffy villains too because I just didn't find him compelling or interesting.  He lacked the humanity that Robert Rodan brought to his characterization.  That is one reason that Season 4 is my least favorite (can you say Riley?), though like my least favorite DS storylines there is also much to love about it-- what was done with Oz and Faith, as examples, and the introduction of Tara and the First Slayer.

Season four of Buffy was just weird. It went into the sci-fi area with underground science labs and agents doing tests on demons, making their own big bad. I'm not into that. I rather see supernatural stuff than science fiction. True about your least favorite seasons/storylines having something good about it. Tara being introduced and Willow becoming her girlfriend was the only good thing happening in that season. With Dark Shadows, the only great thing I liked about the Adam storyline was that they brought Marie Wallace to the show. I love her as Eve, Jenny and Megan. She was a great addition to the show.

I mean no offense to anyone or their opinions, but I have to agree with another post, I too appreciate the fact that Dark Shadows didn't have any explicit scenes in it. I think a story can be enjoyed without having those types of scenes in them. Of course this is just my humble opinion. :)

I agree. I was glad they were able to go on for so long without having to bring that to the series.
Bramwell and Catherine having sex, then her getting pregnant, and not letting anyone know was too much like an ordinary soap opera storyline. That and there not having any regular characters in the 1841PT is why I don't consider that storyline part of DS.
He WAS a newborn for pete's sake. Do you have kids? Be prepared.

Nope, I don't and will never have kids.

Quote
Prbably because the fans are mindless teenagers who only want something of sexual fantasy value. They don't want to actually think. I don't think Barny or any vampire would be popular if there wasn't strong sex vibes that Hollywood invented. Real vampires legends say that they have foul breath and appear more like Nosferatu. I don't think Nos is sexy.

America really has to grow up.

I don't understand how sex got involved, but if you must know one of the many things I love about Dark Shadows is that sex was never brought into the show until the last storyline with Bramwell and Catherine and by then DS was a new show I didn't like so I don't count that. I could care less about sex on shows. I watch shows for the stories, not to see people jump in and out of bed getting it on. If you watched Buffy, you would understand why that story was the worst on the show. How do you know what Buffy fans think? Are you in their minds? I got offended by that comment because I was teen when Buffy was on and believe me sex was never my big obssession with the show. I'm sure a lot of Buffy fans were the same way. Sex was never big on Buffy anyways. It was mainly stories about villains and their personal problems. Don't make accusations like that.

This description could easily be applied to Barnabas.  ;D

True. However Barnabas became a character you could like. Adam didn't get that chance. Maybe if they brought him back later on and gave him a better story I might feel differently.

He was controlling, got annoying a lot of times, thought his way was the only right way to do things, badgered Julia too many times, and for the most part he just got on my nerves. I don't like Frankenstien storylines. It doesn't work for shows. They tried it on Buffy The Vampire Slayer and that season/villain is considered one of the least favorite among fans.

I thought the reason
Joe died so soon was so that they could bring him back as Chris and start the werewolf storyline. That is my guess because it did happen very quickly, his death.
I tend to agree that they would have
brought him back as a different character... perhaps a time-travelling or reincarnated Peter Bradford... I also think they killed Joe off so soon for shock value... and it certainly worked.  My jaw was on the floor!!
I don't think they would have done that. Only because
Victoria wasn't in love with Peter from the revival series. It wouldn't make sense to bring him back. I think it would have been better doing it the way of having Michael play Joe's twin brother or cousin that's a werewolf. That way Carolyn could have something to work with for that following season.
Apparently I missed the post about the actors/actresses. Everyone was ok except Lysette. She acted floozy when doing the spells. I didn't care for it. There wasn't one drop of evil acting coming from her like Lara performed. Lara knew how to be a witch. Lysette didn't and I couldn't picture that show continuing with her as Angelique. I don't think she was the right actress for the part.

Question and speculation regarding the revival series --
Since both Professor Woodard and Joe Haskel were killed-off during the first season, doesn't it seem strange to have the show continue without those two important characters?  Do you think TPTB had plans to "replace" them in some way?  Perhaps with another professor (Stokes?), and another hunk/good-guy to replace Joe?
I'd love to hear your speculation.

I thought the reason
Joe died so soon was so that they could bring him back as Chris and start the werewolf storyline. That is my guess because it did happen very quickly, his death.
