Current Talk '04 I / Re: DS ACTORS ON OTHER DAYTIME SERIALS

I also forgot to mention that, on The Secret Storm, Joel Crothers's character, Ken, was married.     There was a young concert pianist named Laurie who fell in love with him.     Laurie's father was insistant that his daughter stay away from Ken.      The father was named Wilifred Hollister, and he was played by Bernard Hughes, who had been on Dark Shadows.

Also, Mr. Hughes had played a doctor on The Guiding Light for many years.

Also on The Secret Storm, Robert Costello was the producer of the show after the cancellation of Strange Paradise.     And Lovelady Powell, who had played the art dealer who wanted Sam's paintings on Dark Shadows (Portia Fitzsimmons?) played a character named Birdie.     Birdie was also involved with Joel Crothers's character.    Ken's ex-wife Jill married Birdie's brother.

Carolyn Groves (Victoria #3) had played Betsy Brown on The Edge of Night in 1963.

(She was also in the movie Six Degrees of Seperation as a party guest.)

I don't think that Betsy Durkin had done much acting - nor did she do much after Dark Shadows.    She was a model, and she was hired to wrap up the Victoria character.       Later, it was decided that the Victoria's finale was not enough, so they brought back the character for a few more episodes, but Carolyn Groves (who had been an actress for a while) was hired to play the role.

Current Talk '04 I / Re: Willie Loomis' Girlfriend

I have always felt that the show originally intended Roxanne to be Willie's girlfriend and she and Barnabas would fall in love.

However, after the departure of Kathyn Leigh Scott as Maggie, they just decided to have a love interest for Barnabas as soon as they could, so they dropped the part about her having been Willie's girlfriend.

The Moore family on Somerset:

I left out one of the most important member of the family:  Julian Cannell (Joel Crothers).

So, the family consisted of Emily Moore Matson (Lois Kibbee), her husband Philip Matson (Frank Schofield), Emily's daughter Andrea Moore and son Dana Moore (Christopher Pennock), Philip's daughter Zoe Matson Cannell and her husband Julian (who was a concert pianist but later was a newspaper editor), and his son Carter Mattson (Jay Gregory).     There was also Aunt Rowena (Camilla Ashland).

Their storyline MAY have begun before the departure of Marie Wallace as India Bishop Delaney - but I am not sure.

Also on Somerset were Dolph Sweet and Dennis Patrick.     Mr. Sweet, Mr. Patrick, and Ms. Wallace were all on the show at the same time.

And later, Stanley Grover was on the show.   (And Nancy Barrett for a few days.)

Concerning Search for Tomorrow, around the time that Denise Nickerson was playing Liza, Michael Maitland was hired to play Bruce Carson.    He played Bruce in between Robby Benson and Gary Tomlin.

Also, I think that Kitty Styles and Ken Stevens (Diana Millay and Joel Crothers) were on The Secret Storm at the same time.

When Christopher Pennock was on Somerset, Frank Schofield played his father.       The actor who played Carter Mattson (Jay Gregory) had also been on Dark Shadows as an extra.   Lois Kibbee played the wife/stepmother, and she, as was mentioned, co-wrote The Bennett Playbill with Joan Bennett.

The information on Jonathan Frid is incorrect.    He did appear as Dr. Bellows on As the World Turns - not Dr. Neil Wade.     That role was played by Michael Lipton, who was also on Somerset when Mr. Schofield and Mr. Pennock were on the show.    (And Marie Wallace had been on the show, also.)

As the World Turns also had a mean character named Dr. Michael Shea.     John Lasalle (Dr. Gutherie) was one of the actors who played that role, but the actor best remembered in the role is the late Roy Shumann.

When Sam Hall was writing One Life to Live, there were three former Dark Shadows performers on the show at the same time:     Nancy Barrett, Anthony George, and Grayson Hall.    There was a scene in which the three were together - possibly in an elevator - and they commented that they thought that they had known each other before they had been in Llanview.

Matthew Hall was also a writer for One Life to Live.    He later wrote for the NBC primetime version of the Dark Shadows.

I was thinking of Betty Buckley or Cleo Laine as Dr. Julia Hoffman.     Both of these actresses worked with Rupert Holmes in his Mystery of Edwin Drood musical (based on a Charles Dickens work).

I LOVED Jane Draper as Suki!

She was blonde, and the other thing that I remember about her the most was her June Allyson-like voice!

I would have loved to have seen her in some other role on Dark Shadows or on any soap opera.      I have never seen her in anything else.

(I wouldn't have wanted her to play Buffy Harrington, though - because I liked Elizabeth Eis too!)

Does anyone know anything about what happened to Ms. Draper?      Was she ever invited to any of the cast reunions?

I had always thought that the show had written off Anthony George as Burke.      The actor was not as popular as Mitchell Ryan, and the story of Victoria and Barnabas was heating up.    Plus, having Burke die in an airplane crash made it better to bring him back than it would if Barnabas had simply killed Burke onscreen.

Then, the show, when it moved to 1795, invited back two of its actors:   Anthony George and Thayer David.   Both of their characters had died.     I am a little suprised that Frank Shofield was not asked back.   He could have played one of the judges.     Maybe he was asked back.

I am curious about why the original Sam and Matthew were replaced.

And, I ALWAYS liked the original Willie better than John Karlen.

I had never heard that Ms. Moltke had made a pilot or anything else on film after Dark Shadows!

I wish I knew more about this.

Another Dark Shadows actor can currently be seen on SoapNet's reruns of Ryan's Hope:

Vince O'Brien is currently appearing as the judge in the custody hearing of Little John Ryan.   Mr. O'Brien appeared as Sheriff George Patterson #2 on Dark Shadows.    He later appeared in two roles on The Guiding Light.

I am not sure of the judge's last name, though.

The show did not know at the conclusion of the 1840 storyline that the ending was to be in April.

So, ratings had fallen after the Levithan storyline, but, when the 1940 Parallel Time story was airing, the ratings were actually rising.

It is reported that Diana Millay had been asked to and had agreed to return to the show, but the cancellation came that there was no time for her to return.

Also, I understand that Alexandra Moltke had been asked to return to the show also.    And Keith Prentiss had a contract, but I am not sure for what length of time.

(I have suspected that the role of Joanna Mills was written with the possibility of the return of Ms. Moltke and that she would be playing the role.)

The puzzlement to me in 1971 and still today was why there were so many performers hired during the 1840 storyline but they were slowly being dropped - not used in the 1840 storyline but still Keith Prentiss was hired and was offered a contract with the show.

During the final months of the show, added to the cast were Donna Wandrey, Kathy Cody, Kate Jackson, James Storm, Virginia Vestoff, Gene Lindsey, Tom Happer, Keith Prentiss, and Lee Beery.

In addition, Clarice Blackburn, Jerry Lacy, Terry Crawford, Elizabeth Eis, and Humbert Allen Astredo (who had not been on the show for a while) were brought back.

I know that Denise Nickerson left, so the hiring of Kathy Cody made since.    The departure of Katheryn Leigh Scott necessitated the hiring of Virginia Vestoff.   (I understand that the character of Samantha was written for Katheryn Leigh Scott.)    Ms. Scott's departure also necessatated the hiring of Donna Wandrey and the changing of Lara Parker into a sympathetic figure.    (She was the most popular Dark Shadows actress during the show's last year, according to the Daytime Television magazine's poll.)

When the show moved over to 1850 Parallel Time, Virginia Vestoff and Jerry Lacy were quickly killed off.    Not used at all were Tom Happer, James Storm, Gene Lindsey, David Henesy (who had left the show, but we did not know that at the time), Michael Stroka, Donna Wandrey (who may have been dismissed from the show - I am not sure), and Lee Beery.

I never understood why there were so many characters in 1840 but not in the Parallel Time.

On an episode of Ryan's Hope earlier this week (Monday, I think, but possibly on Tuesday), Dr. Boulac gave Jillian Coleridge a crystal ball.

I suspect that it is the same one that Burke Devlin gave to David Collins on Dark Shadows, although I have no way of telling for sure.

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Question #3: Ralph Ellis
« on: November 13, 2003, 03:48:08 PM »
Could someone tell me if Ralph Ellis had even written anything prior to his sole script of a Dark Shadows episode?

I know that he later was a headwriter for The Guiding Light and As the World Turns and also wrote for Loving.

And, I beleive that he was an actor on NBC's Our Five Daughters (a show on which both Frank Schofield and John Karlen appeared, I beleive).

Was Dark Shadows his first writing?

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Question #2: Gordon Russell
« on: November 13, 2003, 03:44:04 PM »
Could someone tell me what shows prior to Dark Shadows were written by the late Gordon Russell?

I understand that he was on the writing staff of one of the other ABC soap operas.    I am not sure if this was A Time for Us or The Nurses.
