Current Talk '07 I / Re: DS The Beginning DVD Disc Problems?
« on: February 01, 2007, 07:57:27 PM »
This information will be going out to all DVD Club members via email this afternoon regarding the disc issue:

"We have discovered that Disc 4 of Dark Shadows - The Beginning Collection 1 is defective. Due to a manufacturing error, several episodes on Disc 4 are missing the closing credits and small portions at the end of the episodes. (Discs 1-3 are not affected.) We apologize for this inconvenience and we will be sending a replacement disc to the Dark Shadows DVD Club Members who have had Dark Shadows The Beginning Collection 1 shipped to them prior to February 1st.

Club members do not need to contact MPI to receive the corrected disc.  We will be sending the corrected disc to all club members who have received Dark Shadows The Beginning Collection 1 through the DVD Club.

Club members who have yet to have this collection shipped through the club will receive the corrected version in the set when they are on this installment.

Thank you for your understanding and your interest in Dark Shadows."

Current Talk '06 II / Re: Info on Pre-Barnabas DVDs
« on: July 21, 2006, 05:14:50 PM »
Price has not been set at this time...as soon as the exact contents on each collection has been compiled, I'll get that info out.  The Barnabas bobbleheads & others most likely will no longer be available if the new benefits (Buy 5, Get the 6th free) are approved officially.

First, thanks to everyone for sharing their opinions on this idea.  I'd also like thank Midnite for taking the time to clarify some of the questions regarding the club agreement.  I'll try to tackle some of the other questions that have arisen now...

The reason we state that the titles are not for resale is that we needed to add that language to exclude commercial accounts from obtaining exclusive club merchandise & marking that up for resale.  On price, remember we also have to sell other MPI titles through the major retailers, so if we compete with them directly on a price basis, that could harm the relationship.  I'd love it if we could always undercut their prices & provide the best deal, but sometimes that just isn't possible due to agreements.  By structuring the offer in this fashion, technically customers would be buying their Collections at full price, so it's not a direct pricing competition with them since the 6th Collection would be a "free premium".

As for distribution...we will make the series available to club members initially...some of you have taken note of the way we phrased that.  While we have no plans for retail distribution at this time, that does not necessarily mean that the title will never be available in retail outlets.  It will remain a club exclusive for a while after its release to make sure DVD Club members' benefits are protected though...

Hope that answers some of your questions/concerns...if you have any more, please feel free to ask them & I will do my best to address them...

First, I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback on the DVD Club.  We're always trying to find ways to add value for members.  I understand that many fans don't have interest in the Bobblehead dolls or other merchandise, so I'd like to get your opinion on a new idea we are considering for the DVD Club if that is okay.  (If the moderators feel that this is not an appropriate forum for discussion, I apologize & please feel free to remove).

We're considering changing the club structure to a "Buy 5, Get the 6th free" structure for each year of membership.  There will be no more bobbleheads or other merchandise as part of the club, but we would allow existing club members to determine whether they would like to receive the bobbleheads & other promotional items instead of the revised benefits of getting every 6th installment free.  New club members would only be able to acquire bobbleheads at the discounted club price & would not be able to receive them.

I imagine most people who have a high level of interest in the bobblehead dolls would have long ago joined the club, so I wanted to gather feedback on this new suggestion.  We're trying to find ways to provide a good bargain for customers, but we also have to make sure we do not anger our existing retail distribution network by directly competing with other retailers on price per collection.  This may be a solution that will give fans a chance to get a good deal while not directly publishing discounted prices per volume  Free US STD Ground shipping would still apply for club members.

Again, thank you for allowing me to participate in the discussion. This is just an idea & not "official" information, so please feel free to share any thoughts you may have on the proposed revision to the club...

To answer the above question, it is possible to join the DVD Club without a credit card.  Members can sign up to join the club by calling our customer service at 800.323.0442 & requesting the DVD Club membership form.

Thank you to all for your feedback on these releases.  You have all raised some interesting points, so I will make sure to bring these up at the internal meetings to finalize these releases.

Once we have an official release plan for these titles, I will make sure to return to the forum with that information.

I just checked with Julie in our customer service department regarding the information they have been providing to the poster who posted after my clarifying post.  I work in the marketing department here at MPI & I can assure you that the information I have provided in my post is correct.

While we are not ruling out a retail release for these collections ever, there are no plans to make them available anywhere but to club members.  We felt that we owed the members of the club this exclusive chance to complete their collection since there were a few merchandise items that have been teased, but not officially released.

If anyone has any further questions about these release plans, please use the "Contact Us" form on either www.mpihomevideo.com or www.darkshadowsdvd.com or email me directly at either darkshadows@mpimedia.com or webmaster@mpimedia.com.

Thank you,

The MPI Marketing Team

Hi All-

I just wanted to drop a line to clarify the confusion about the release plans for the pre-Barnabas episodes.  The information in the e-mail to DVD Club members below is the correct information regarding the release plans for the series.

The information you received from our customer service representative was incorrect & they have been provided with the correct information.

Although final release details have not been completed, the tentative plan is to release these episodes in 6 collections with 35 episodes each plus all-new bonus material.  These collections will be made available exclusively to members of the DVD Club & they will not be available at retail outlets other than the DVD Club at this time.

An "official" announcement on the availability of these Collections should be coming in a few weeks.  Tentatively, we are hoping to have the first Collection available later this year for shipment to club members.

I hope this clears up any confusion & I apologize for the earlier miscommunications.  If you have any further questions about the series, I will do my best to answer them in this forum or through my email at webmaster@mpimedia.com.

Thanks,

MPI Marketing

Current Talk '04 II / Re: DVD Set Packaging- Sets 1-10
« on: July 29, 2004, 03:31:02 PM »
DVD Collections 1-10 will still be issued in the same format until replenishment runs are necessary.  At this time, no runs are scheduled for any of the collections.  When new runs are necessary, they will be available in the same keep case as the newer collections.

Thank you,
MPI

Current Talk '04 II / Re: DS SET 13 disc 3
« on: July 20, 2004, 03:26:56 PM »
We have been looking into all aspects of DVD packaging over the past few months.  That is why we have the new slimmer DVD cases since we have found they secure the DVDs more securely during the shipping process.  As of yet, we are unaware of any problems during the production of Collection 13.  We ask fans who do encounter playback issues to return those discs to MPI, so we can examine them.

Over the next few weeks, we are also considering new fulfillment packaging which may secure the DVD case better during the shipping period.

As far as the problems the individual has with removing the discs from the cases, it is recommended to press down on the center holder while insuring the disc is on as even of a level as possible to free the DVD.

Thanks.

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Re:MPI Mailing
« on: December 16, 2003, 02:58:33 PM »
It appears as though there is some confusion regarding the MPI mailing list, so I thought I would take some time to clear that up.  MPI's mailing list is an opt-in mailing list.  That means that to be added to the mailing list you either need to request a catalog via phone or e-mail or have joined through an alternate method (ie - DS convention mailing list).

MPI's privacy policy posted at www.mpihomevideo.com outlines this policy in greater detail.  While there are many people who automatically like to receive mailings upon purchases, that approach can be viewed as unethical since there are also many people who do not wish to receive these mailings automatically.  That is the reasoning behind making the mailing list opt-in...

For those of you with internet access, you might wish to sign up to recieve the monthly MPI Home Video newsletter from www.mpihomevideo.com.  This newsletter was created to announce new releases as well as notify fans of all special offers at MPI.  The DS VHS blowout was also announced on this newsletter in early December.

Thanks again & hopefully I've been able to clear up any confusion regarding the mailing list.

Current Talk '03 II / Re:More Edits in DS DVD Set 7
« on: October 15, 2003, 05:43:47 PM »
We definitely understand the concern regarding any potential editing in the Dark Shadows DVD Collections.  Any edits that have been made were done without the knowledge of MPI or Dan Curtis Productions.  As we said in an earlier thread, the remastering of the show was performed by an external company at an earlier time.

We have implemented an additional internal check to further ensure that no other edits have been performed without the knowledge of Dan Curtis Productions or MPI.

Thank you for your concern regarding these edits...In all aspects of the DVD releases, the intention has been to present the material in the most authentic fashion as possible.  We can assure you that we are not authorizing editing of any content in any fashion of the series.  Obviously, there are occasions when the source material has been damaged due to the age of the material.  We are, however, not making decisions to edit out bloopers or any other content as originally aired.

Current Talk '03 II / Re:Error in DVD 7 Episode ???
« on: September 29, 2003, 06:58:21 PM »
MPI is committed to releasing Dark Shadows in its complete and unedited form as originally broadcast. An outside videotape restoration facility recently digitally remastered the episodes for the program's owner, Dan Curtis Productions, and apparently there are a very few instances where the video facility has made small edits for technical reasons -- since the original masters have various picture blemishes and other problems due to the age of the material and the technology existent at the time of production (1966-71). We are investigating this matter thoroughly to hopefully avoid any further incidents even though the few trims encountered thus far have been minimal.

Thanks,
MPI

Current Talk '03 I / Re:Classic Blooper edited out on MPI DVD#6
« on: June 30, 2003, 09:08:34 PM »
To All Dark Shadows Fans:

The deleted blooper in DVD Collection 6 is an isolated error and was not edited out intentionally on MPI's part as we are committed to presenting the series as it originally aired. All previous MPI "Dark Shadows" DVDs have presented the episodes complete and that is our goal for each release in the future.

We have discovered that the new master supplied to us for the episode in question was edited without authorization by the video and audio restoration facility that has remastered the original episodes into digitial format to preserve them for the program's owner,  Dan Curtis Productions.

Every step will be taken to prevent  this oversight from happening again. Although no dialogue was edited out of the episode in question, we want to preserve the integrity of "Dark Shadows," which means keeping in all the mistakes that are part of the show's charm and appeal.

Additionally, the missing blooper will be seen on MPI's DVD release of "Dark Shadows Bloopers" in the coming year, along with other surprises.

Thank you for your interest and understanding.

Current Talk '03 I / Re:DVD Set 5 flaw on disc 2?
« on: June 26, 2003, 04:20:21 PM »
We have confirmed that the problem mentioned in this thread is on the original masters, so unfortunately we have no way to correct it if there is missing material.  Our intention was to represet the content on DVD as it appears on the masters, so editing has not been undertaken.  We have done our best to prepare the material for our DVD releases, but when dealing with sometimes spotty masters, there are only so many improvements that can feasably be made.

I can assure all DS fans that MPI is definitely not going bankrupt.

On the contrary, we are in the process of expanding our line of product offerings in Dark Shadows as well as other programs.

Any rumors to the contrary have absolutely no basis in fact.  If possible, please contact us at webmaster@mpimedia.com with where you heard this rumor, so we can set the course straight there as well.

Thanks,
MPI
