Right, MT! And then there's
Brutus Collins's curse on his own family, a curse that outlived him by almost 200 years.
This is the third night of the full moon. The writers are stretching this out.

Donna is wearing a bright red suit. Maybe if she had watched Star Trek, she would know why it's such a bad idea to wear red.

Julia's royal blue dress and scarf suit her coloring very nicely. When Barnabas says he thinks Chris is a werewolf, she is incredulous. I can't believe it! she protests, even though she has seen ghosts, time travel, the effects of a witch’s spells and even the devil himself--not to mention that a former vampire regards her as his “dear friend.” Now that Barnabas has decided to help Chris, he no longer refers to him by the colder, more remote “Jennings.”

I never thought Mr. Wells owned the Collinsport Inn. I thought he was just the clerk. But of course I could be wrong.

Amy tells Chris that Mrs. Stoddard gave her a book about a little girl from colonial times, a Collins ancestor. It can only be poor Sarah.

The tall foyer clock strikes 5:00 p.m. Barnabas stands next to it, a look of determination on his face. Donna admires the portrait of the “first” Barnabas. You had to have posed for it, she tells him. If I had, he answers lightly, think how old it would make me. They move to the drawing room, where Carolyn is serving tea. Julia already has a cup. Barnabas’s rare smile lingers as he enters the drawing room.

Barn is compassionate when he tells Julia about the panic he saw on Chris's face, but he still orders her around as if she were his servant.

Donna runs through the woods in terror, the werewolf close behind her. Thinking she’s safe for the moment, she stops to catch her breath. It is the last mistake she will ever make....

I guess if Chris shows up in a tuxedo, he must be really, really scared!  [snow_cheesy]

Good point, MT, but do all the curses in the DS universe work that way?
I think that with the Leviathans it's a different story, but I don't remember for sure.
When Barn fights the creature, it scratches his hand. He manages to attack it with his cane, and it runs off. Once more a mortal man, he knows full well that the cane--and not the gun--probably saved his life.

Amy knows that when the moon is full, her brother is in danger. Julia goes to the cottage and finds it trashed, as Carolyn had described. On her way home, the creature springs to attack her--but collapses, its shirt covered in blood. Julia continues on her way, with no idea of how close she came to death or worse.

At sunrise, Chris returns to human form where he collapsed in the woods. His shirt is bloody and torn where Barnabas shot him. While he lies unconscious, Beth appears. [Well, okay, actually she walks onto the set.] She too is now strong enough to leave Quentin’s Room. She gazes down at the young man with deep sorrow and pity.

When Chris revives, his first thought is of Carolyn. We get another topless shot of DB, yay! Barnabas visits and tells him that Carolyn is all right. Chris's relief is almost palpable.

Amy walks through the woods. Where are you, Beth? she calls. I have to talk to you. Please--it’s important. Amy is delighted when Beth appears. Why did David break his promise that Carolyn wouldn’t be hurt? Amy asks. Why did you let it happen? Beth looks at her sadly. You didn’t want it to happen, Amy realizes. Then why did it? Beth begins to cry. Her weeping is all the more sorrowful for its utter silence. I know you didn’t want it to happen any more than I did, Amy tells her. How can I protect Carolyn--or anyone? (We know she means Chris.) Beth recovers and puts a gentle hand under Amy’s chin to lift her face. I know there’s something you want me to do, Amy says. Looking into Amy’s eyes, Beth conveys her idea by thought alone. Like Quentin, she is still too weak to speak aloud. Listening intently, Amy murmurs, I know.… I know. Beth smiles.

Barnabas finally returns to Collinwood and the relieved Julia. [His injured hand is now bandaged, but no one mentions it, including him--possibly out of manly modesty. He’ll wear a bandage for the next three episodes.] I was worried about you when you didn’t return, she says. He explains, I felt I should keep searching until I decided it was useless. I did manage to shoot the animal, point blank, yet it didn't die. The blast from the gun should have killed any living creature. Before they can indulge in further discussion, they hear a knock at the door. To Julia’s surprise, Barnabas says, That will be Chris. I stopped by the cottage to tell him about Carolyn. Chris comes in. I’m relieved you’re all right, Julia says. Barnabas tells her, Chris is fine--he spent the entire night in the cottage. Several emotions flit across Julia’s face at this announcement. I slept through all the excitement, Chris says. I wish someone had told me--I might have been able to help. But-- Julia starts, then shrugs and says nothing. She tells Chris, You can go up and see Carolyn--she's awake. Chris thanks her and goes upstairs.

Barnabas goes into the drawing room, followed by Julia. He's lying, she declares without preamble. Chris is lying! He didn't have a peaceful night's sleep. I doubt he had any sleep at all. What do you mean? Barnabas asks. She tells him, I went to the cottage close to dawn because I was worried about Chris. He was gone, and the place was a shambles. Why would he lie? she wonders. I don't know, Barnabas says, but apparently he already has the beginnings of a hypothesis.

At the cottage, Amy finds Chris’s torn and bloody shirt and throws it onto the fire she just built in the hearth. The shirt catches fire and begins to burn. I’ve done it, Beth, just the way you told me to do it, she calls out. Are you watching me? A moment later, Chris returns from Collinwood (wearing a business suit--he dressed up to see Carolyn!) and is surprised to find his little sister there and apparently in some sort of trance. Amy, what’s wrong? he asks with concern. Nothing is wrong now, she replies. I have to go. She’s calling me--can’t you hear it? No, Chris replies, puzzled. I can, Amy says cryptically. She runs from the cottage before Chris can stop her. He sees something burning in the hearth and stirs it with the poker. My shirt! he exclaims, totally confused.…..

I like the look that Barn and Julia exchange when Elizabeth tells them about her vision of Cassangelique going up in flames. Maybe Julia is trying to reassure herself as much as everyone else when she insists that everything is okay. And it is, for the time being, now that Elizabeth is home. Carolyn's pride in her mother's strength of will is very touching. Nice work by NB and JB.

Barn has a good guess as to why Carolyn's bracelet repelled the creature, but he isn't talking.

Of course, if Elizabeth DID have that vision of Cassangelique getting dragged back to hell, why didn't the spell break there and then? Because the writers didn't want it to, I guess.

If Elizabeth is in some sort of suspended animation-type state, maybe she wouldn't feel hungry or thirsty. Plus, I don't think Angelique would have wanted her to die that fast. It takes only about 3 days to die of thirst (or so I've heard).

Carolyn is still wearing her big silver bracelet when she goes to the cottage.

The werewolf roams the woods, growling, perhaps looking for prey. Eventually it arrives at the cemetery. With a growl of sorrow, the creature pauses at Tom’s grave (1944-1968), which is near Elizabeth’s elegant little mausoleum.

I remember actually enjoying the suspense as Elizabeth finally succeeds in breaking through the spell and reaching Carolyn. Maternal love conquers all!

David tells Amy that Quentin seems pleased about Chris and Carolyn, but not out of the goodness of his heart.

Carolyn is wearing her pretty green sweater and skirt, with a large silver cuff bracelet.

Amy doesn't want to do anything to hurt Carolyn. David threatens to tell Quentin that Amy doesn't want to play the game. Amy protests, but David is unmoved. Maybe I _will_ tell him, David says with casual cruelty. Then Quentin and I can play the game--with _you_. No, Amy pleads. Why are you being so mean to me? I don't want you to be afraid, David. It's only a game. Sometimes it's so dangerous, Amy protests. What's dangerous? David asks. It only scares people, it doesn’t hurt them. How quickly he’s forgotten Madam Findley!

The game goes horribly wrong when Maggie and not Carolyn goes to the cottage to get Chris.

I love it that we see the kids playing the card game War. My grandmother taught to us many years ago. We thought we were so cool!

Interesting to see all those paper shopping bags.

Mrs. J. is not best pleased at the idea of having more housework to do, what with getting the cottage ready for Chris. Nothing good ever happens there, she grouses, and indeed, nothing good ever does!

The kids pull the wool over Maggie's eyes and successfully escape outdoors. Did Amy cultivate her skill at mendacity before she came to Collinwood? Or it is just how Quentin's influence is manifesting itself in her?

Scary, SCARY moments when Mrs. J sees Quentin, not once but TWICE!!! As she shines the candle around the room, suddenly she finds herself face to face with a very tall, very handsome, very angry man with mutton-chop whiskers. He is dressed in an old-fashioned suit with a frock coat. Thanks to the children, Quentin has become strong enough to leave his room. His piercing blue eyes stare implacably into hers. Oh my god! she shrieks, dropping the candle in her fright. She rushes to the door, rattling the doorknob as she tries to escape. But Quentin has vanished.

After her second sighting of Quentin, Mrs. J is badly rattled. Maggie and Harry no. 2 unlock the door, and Mrs. J. sends Harry for some water.  He leaves to get some [and is never seen on the show again]. Farewell, Edward Marshall. Mrs. J. describes Quentin to Maggie.

Now in possession of both the candle and the cottage, Quentin opens the door and steps outside. He stares off into the woods, his expression fixed in an angry, vengeful sneer........

Tsk, tsk, MT!  [snow_wink] I'm sure Carolyn had nothing else in mind but helping out a childhood friend.

Any scenes with Clarice Blackburn (and Thayer David) were great. Anyone else would have hammed up Abigail Collins, but CB made her seem like a real person instead of just a caricatured cardboard cutout.

Maggie comes to David's room to check on him. Amy says she had a bad dream about David and came to make sure he was okay. It was just a nightmare, Maggie says, trying to comfort Amy. Amy says, I’ve had the same dream, lots of times, about people I like. So many people have died--my parents, and Tom. (Twice, but luckily Amy doesn’t know it.) Sometimes I get scared to like people because I’m afraid they'll leave me and die. [The poor little thing probably isn’t lying about this part!]

Carolyn and Chris's romance is blossoming. She offers him the use of the cottage, which probably has been empty since the demise of Matthew Morgan.

Wearing their nineteenth-century clothes, David and Amy make it to the drawing room without being spotted and can hear Chris and Carolyn's conversation in the foyer. Amy will be very pleased, Carolyn tells Chris. I'm pleased, too, Chris says. [As the children sneak through the drawing room, David blows out his candle and then blows out Amy's candle. But Amy's candle is already out. Seeing this, David smiles at Amy, and she smiles back. They look adorable!]

David relights the candles, and he leads Amy to the servants' quarters in the West Wing. Why does Quentin want us to come here? Amy wonders. Quentin’s music plays, and this time, they both hear it. I know where we are, Amy says, becoming possessed by Beth. We’re in my room. Quentin, you shouldn't have come here, she says softly. I'm afraid of them. I'm afraid of both of them. Don’t be afraid, David says, becoming possessed by Quentin. They can't do anything to us. Amy protests, But he hates you so, and so does she. No more than I hate her, David replies. You don't believe in her powers, in her curse--but you should, Amy says. David replies, I'll find a way of stopping her.

On her way to bed [In the deserted, _haunted_ old servants’ quarters? And didn’t she famously declare that she wouldn’t sleep at Collinwood?] Mrs. Johnson stops in the hallway when she overhears the children.

You can't stop her, Amy pleads. I don't know if anyone can. Mrs. Johnson presses her ear to the door. Don't worry, David tells her. I'm tired of their interference. I’m going to put an end to it. Mrs. Johnson opens the door. Having heard what sounded almost like adult voices, she gasps in amazement when she sees David and Amy. Mrs. J chides them for disobeying all of "Miss Carolyn"'s orders. (She really should call her "Miss Stoddard" as Harry properly does.) Later, Mrs. J tells Maggie all about it. Maggie defends them and says she used to enjoy playing dress-up herself as a kid.
Pretty soon, she won't like it quite so much.
Mrs. J sticks to her guns and adds that she doesn't like the way David has changed.

The children have returned to David’s room. Amy tells David, I feel funny, not the same as I did downstairs. I don't feel like Beth, and I don’t want to be her. He stalks toward her, insisting, You're _Beth_! Not really, she says, I'm Amy. He grabs her and orders her, Don’t talk like that-- not while we're playing the game! Don’t get mad, she pleads. He tells her, Remember the rules of the game: When we're wearing the clothes, we're Beth and Quentin. I understand, Amy says meekly. David locks his door and warns her, We must be more careful and not get caught again. What will happen now? she asks. David tells her, Something will happen to Mrs. Johnson. What? she asks worriedly. You’ll see, David replies, wearing a smug, wicked grin.…..

Willie brings a bag of tools to the mausoleum, but in her excitement Julia has forgotten her medical bag and has to listen for Barn's heartbeat without a stethoscope. Barnabas revives. He is weak at first but slowly regains his strength as the sweet morning air fills his lungs. Julia tells him it’s all due to Willie. Clutching his hand, Julia tells him, I'd given up all hope when you didn't come back last night. Still excited about it, Willie explains about seeing Josette, then hearing the heartbeat as he had before. I knew you'd be here! he winds up. Everything will be all right, Barnabas assures them. Julia encourages him to rest for a while.

Maybe DC thought that Barn's coffin was a TARDIS.

Barn needs Willie's help when our trio has to hurry back into the secret room so that Carolyn and Amy won't see them. Carolyn leaves her roses on Sarah's grave, and they leave at last. [But wait! I thought she was going to leave them on her mother’s coffin!]

After Carolyn and Amy have gone, Willie tells Barnabas, You'll have to do something about that kid's curiosity sooner or later--it could be dangerous. As they leave, Willie wipes the sweat from his forehead.

David twists Amy's arm, but she still defends him to Carolyn. Poor little tykes. Carolyn takes her role as head of the family very seriously and gives David a real dressing-down. He tries to make excuses, but clearly she doesn't believe him, as well she shouldn't. After she leaves, he is practically breathless with fury.

Much later, after dark, Amy goes to David's room, bringing a lighted candle with her. She calls to him softly, and he calls back. She enters the room to find David sulking in a big chair. I'm glad you came, he tells her. His voice is very adult; apparently he is possessed again. No one saw me, she assures him. He tells her, I’ve decided what we're going to do. We're going to play the game--really play it. And this time, he adds with an evil smile, Carolyn is going to play the game with us.…...
