I'm in total agreement that DS appealed to females AND males. That write should go to a DS Festival to see how many Baby Boomer guys attend!

As for soaps in general, the storylines just keep repeating over and over and over again. With AMC bringing back Jesse, as has been mentioned, it's so completely over the top and stupid, I'm still shaking my head. We saw the man flatline in the hospital as his doctor-wife, Angie, sobbed over his body. Normally, when soaps want to resurrect someone, they make sure the body isn't found. This is just too dumb!

Current Talk '08 I / Re: Dark Shadows: Why Such a Huge Gay Following?

I agree whole-heartedly about Frid's overall performance. His voice is magnetic, hypnotic, powerful -- all sorts of adjectives come to mind. As for his expressions, let's just say, the man is a master!

About the lesbian question. Like Nancy, I am not a lesbian. I do, however, have several friends who are. While it's so difficult, maybe even foolish, to generalize, my friends do admire powerful women. In fact, many of them are powerful women. As a straight woman, I, too, find that much more attractive than some simpering, whiny, "helpless" female.

Perhaps a good reason has to do with the character of Barnabas Collins. When we meet him, he's a vampire, a creature who's definitely something to be reviled -- an outcast to human society. Yet, as time goes on, he gains acceptance by those around him and a self-acceptance as well. A parallel could be drawn between his experience and that of a gay person dealing with coming out of the closet. I don't know if that's over-analyzing, but I can see where someone who's gay could relate to Barnabas' experiences.

And here's hoping for a New Year filled with wonderful things for all of us! [santa_thumb]

Current Talk '07 II / Re: DVD Long-Term Availability

As someone who purchased the entire series on VHS, I can tell you that, at times, certain volumes were sold out, and I'd have to wait for them. Then, when MPI announced they were discontinuing the VHS tapes altogether, I had to scramble to acquire the volumes I didn't yet possess. There was such a rush from fans like myself that the office had a difficult time keeping up with all the orders! So, long story even longer, I don't foresee the DVD's being discontinued!

You're right, Nelson. No one was truly dead on DS. Well, at least, most weren't -- LOL!

The thing is, though {spoiler alert}, Gabriel killed Edith in 1840, so how could Grandma Edith be alive in 1897?{end spoiler}. Of course, we all know this was, yet again, one of those writer hiccups. The 1897 storyline came before the 1840 storyline, so it really was a matter of whatever suited the storyline needs at the time, and logic be damned. [BOO]

Thanks so much for passing this along! It's sad to hear that ABC thought so little of the show's "young" fans (we were young once -- LOL!). I think, too, ratings were slipping. All that bouncing back and forth between time lines got a little confusing and frustrating.

I don't know of any and haven't heard even a rumor. I'd venture to say, though, that a lot of the actors were grateful. For many of them, it was their first "real" job in the business. If the character of Barnabas hadn't taken off the way it did, the show would have been cancelled. I suppose, given that, they were grateful for his appearance.

The person I thought was shoved to the side, and this was tragic, was Joan Bennett. I would have liked to have seen her utilized more effectively, as she was in the beginning. As for Moltke, yeah, she became a real clueless idiot after Barnabas came on the scene.

Brandon, when I made my reservation, I was told all they needed was a 24-hour notice of cancellation, which is the norm with the Marriotts. One caveat for those of you who haven't yet made a reservation: The $129 rate is only for a single/double room. If you have more people in your room, it goes up to $149, and for three or four, it's $169. Go figure!

You're quite welcome, Judy! I made the reservation as soon as you let me know this a.m.! And, yes, the return of the costume gala will be most welcome. Because, as we all know, it's "knock, knock, knock upon those hallowed doors -- our English cousin's here!"
