Daniel in 1840 is not exactly a kind man.  He did push his wife Harriet to her death over Widows Hill and both his sons and their wives are aware of this.  This would explain Edith's feelings for Daniel in 1897.  It was never contradicted anywhere about Daniel forcing Gabriel and Edith to live at Collinwood instead of the Old House, so that could have happened.  Perhaps he did that because he was afraid the "family secret" may be found out in The Old House.

As for Edith, she may not have been killed but just unconscious/comatose and revived eventually.

She  may have even married another Collins cousin, who died in 1863.

Kathryn Leigh Scott was originally to have played Samantha Collins.  We are lucky that she didn't, otherwise Barnabas would be fawning over Samantha during this story and try to make her into Josette.

When Barnabas first kidnaps Maggie, he tells her that he was Josette's tutor in English and thats when he first fell in love with her.

It is even stated on the series itself that things in 1970 do not match up in 1840:
When Stokes arrives in 1840 via the stairway, Julia tells him that what they witnessed in 1970 differs from what she saw: Daphne not being there until later on, Gerard not being the ghost that haunts the family, etc.  So, there is some continuity explanation going on...she even brings up Cassandra being in the past to explain away Angelique.
I still think Judah Zacahary was decieving everyone in 1970 to throw them off the trail.

That article really descibed the problem with DS midway during 1897.  The writers would not move the characters forward but kept them in the same "limbo" state for the rest of the series.

The scene in Angelique's room following the end of Parallel Time where Julia tells Barnabas about him not being the only one who has had so little hope would have been a good starting part for a Barnabas/Julia pairing.

In a way they resemble Dr. Steve Hardy and Jessie Brewer on General Hospital.  Both of them had a lot of stories together where they helped the other out but never ever had any romance between them.

Perhaps it would have been better to have had Joshua Collins still be alive in 1840 and be the patriarch of the family.  Joshua and Ben were about the same age.

Perhaps that other vampire saw Barnabas and ran off.

When I first saw 1897, I thought that the disappearance of the 1969 body of Barnabas was for it to appear in 1897 and show that Barnabas was not really a vampire (as it was a human body) and that the 1897 body was then returned to the chained coffin where it should be.

I use Angelique as the one who corrects things in both 1897 and 1840 (IMHO)

[When curing Barnabas in both time periods, she manages to seperate the present/past selves and cure only the present version while the past self returns to the mausoleum.  This is the only way that I can see how the present time family still remembers Barnabas.  It happened off camera.]

It would have been simpler for Barnabas to use the staircase as opposed to the I Ching to get to 1840 and just leave the 1840 Barnabas untouched in the chained coffin.

Sorry for the delay in responding.  I was out of power for 26 hours.  The blackout happened just as I was about to leave work for home.  I walked all the way from Chambers Street (near Ground zero) to my home in Jackson Heights, Queens.  It was a three hour walk, I was drenched as it was a hot, humid day.

Maybe he was Flora's husband.  1841 PT is so different from regular 1841 that it is possible.

Abner was probably the son of another of Joshua's cousins.
