Downplaying Liz and Rogerin the story after Barnabas arrived.
A certain actor playing too many roles.
The abrupt ending of 1897.
Losing the live exterior shots
Losing the miscellaneous people in the background.
No backstory on Julia other that she and Dave Woodard were friends in medical school (she did make reference to her grandmother once though).

and..

losing a great opportunity to use Monty Hall in the Dream Curse. lol.

When he learned about the secret room, if he was unable to find Burke, wouldn't the logical thing to do was go directly to the sheriff or at least Sam Evans and Joe Haskell.   Taking it all on his own was not a wise decision.

Here is a link to a story he did based on an idea from Dan Ross, the DS novelist.

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Major flaw in the 1897 storyline

Another weird inconsistency I just noticed. After Julia comes to 1897, Barnabas tells her that Angelique is there. Julia acts surprised, but why should she be? After all, Beth told her that Angelique was engaged to Quentin even before Julia made the trip back to the past. Yikes

Actually, Beth's ghost never mentioned the name of the woman to Julia.

I always thought that Professor Stokes and Julia would have made a great couple.

I always thought Angelique's timeline went as follows:

1692 (as Miranda)- she then eventually died.
1795/1796- reincarnated and made a witch per Angelique's Descent.
1840
1968
1796
1897
1970

Angelique was making annual trips to check that Barnabas was still chained in his coffin, so in the original 1840 she saw the chains and then left town.  The same goes for 1897.

I always thought that following 1897, there were two Angeliques in the 1968 period.  While she was Cassandra at Collinwood, her present self was in New York as a model, eventually meeting Sky Rumson and marrying him.  She clearly avoided Collinwood altogether in 1968 to avoid messing anything up.

At the point in 1897 when Quentin is saved from being killed, Barnabas makes a statement "David was never possessed".  which would be the true case, as there is no ghost in the present time. But the writers forgot all about this by having present time characters still remember his ghost.   By the summer 1970 haunting of Gerard/Daphne, everyone seems to have forgotten Quentin/Beth's haunting by not commenting on the similarites between the two.

The WB sure made a mistake in selecting The Mountain over DS and continuing Angel. I hear it may be cancelled.  Looking at that show, I just have to ask- "What were they thinking???"

Thats another good thing about 1795 in that there is a regular soap opera type story going on as in the first months when Barnabas appeared.

Current Talk '04 II / Re: Ross Novels / Gold Key Comics
« on: December 27, 2004, 07:06:11 PM »
The best of the Ross novels were the early ones.  There is some continuity between the first six or seven from "Dark Shadows" to "The Foe of Barnabas Collins".  They are also most like the series, though there is a cosuin named Ernest Collins, whom Vicky is in love with.  He is written out in "The Curse of Collinwood", which also ties up the loose ends of some of the characters, paving the way for Barnabas to be introduced in the next novel "Barnabas Collins".
Apparently, some of these loose ends were taken from Art Wallace's "Shadows on the Wall" Bible for the first year of DS:
-Elizabeth learns that her husband she thought dead is alive and has a career in the sea.  Upon learning that he is alive, Liz decides to leave Collinwood and join the community again after 20 years.
-Roger's wife has died.
-Ernest Collins is killed in a plane crash. (not from the DS Bible)
-Burke and Vicky start a romance.

The first three take place in about the first three pages of the book!
This is a really fast read and not as gothic but more horror like then the previous novels.

In an interview, Dan Ross stated that it was Matthew Morgan who was the unknown attacker on Vicky.

The first Gold Key DS comic book is hilarious in that everytime Barnabas is shown, he is seen running with one arm raised while holding his cane in his hand!

My grandmother also had the same number of children as your grandmother did with the same age difference between the oldest and the youngest.  Was your grandmother Italian and from the Bronx with a last name beginning with "P"?

This proves that Judith and Carl could be from the same mother as well as the difference in the ages of Barnabas and Sarah.

my greatgrandmother had 12 children and the oldest was 26 when the last one was born ick! the poor woman was always nursing!

1897 was originally to have lasted three months as Dan Curtis said in an interview.  Does anyone have any idea what they originally may have outlined for 1897?  Perhaps it was more like 1795 with Barnabas just standing on the sidelines watching the events play out.

That chair looks a lot like Archie Bunker's chair.  I wondered if it was used on that show later on.

Vicky slowly got over her grief for Burke during the 5 months she spent in 1795.

I never did understand why his name wasn't at least brought up soon after she returmed from the past (as Dr. Woodard was).

Someone should have asked her "Vicky, a few minutes ago you were in mouring about Burke, now who is this Peter who you are so upset about"?

There was an odd fan made video spoof of the Julia-Barnabas relationship at the convention this year.

It goes like this:As usual, Barnabas rejects Julia and she goes off to get drunk at the Blue Whale, while there, she overhears a conversation with Joe, Burke, and Maggie (an clip of a scene from an early Barnabas episode) where Joe mentions the loss of blood of one of his uncle's cows.  This gives Julia an idea and she rushes off to the farm with a cow suit mooing when Baranabas appears to strike at one of the cows.  Julia tries to convince him she is a cow but  Barnabas is too stunned just flies off . The farmer then arrives, thinking that she really is a cow.

One guy played all the parts!
