I see your point, though it seems like Dr. Lang had no problem accepting the fact that Barnabas' vampirism was the result of a "curse" being placed upon him when Barnabas told him as much when he was still in the hospital. But the scientific thing makes sense.

Julia learns the horrible truth that no matter how things may turn out in the future, she will never be the first Mrs. Barnabas Collins. [snow_cry]

In retrospect, I love how casually Julia asks, "Who's Angelique?" considering how monumental a nemesis she would prove to be throughout the course of the series (however, Julia already asked that question a few episodes back when she and Barnabas were conversing in the Old House, though apparently she, or the writers, had forgotten that).

Dr. Lang seems to be suffering from that same cognitive dissonance that so afflicts the residents of Collinsport. As he's standing face-to-face with a 200-year-old vampire, he just can't seem to wrap his head around the fact that there might be such a thing in this world as witches and witchcraft.

Imagine, for a moment, Barnabas actually taking Dr. Lang up on his absurd offer. Barnabas would not only look like Jeff Clark but he would have to BECOME Jeff Clark in order to make the ruse work. He'd have to give up his whole identity as a Collins, including his beloved Old House and even his wolf's-head cane! Plus, he could never spend hours reminiscing about the past as is his wont.

Would having Vicki really be worth sacrificing all that?

I liked the "quietness" of this episode. Everyone seemed to be underplaying their roles for a change which was nice, especially AM in her scene with Barnabas and JF himself as he sat brooding on Dr. Lang's couch, looking terribly resigned and defeated, preferring to remain a vampire if that was what it would take to claim Vicki as his own.

Isn't it interesting how different people look in mirrors? The odd thing is that, except for in photos, we are the only people who routinely see ourselves "reversed" as it were from how others see us. Maybe that's why we often think pictures don't look much like us.

Doesn't Vicki ever tutor David anymore? When's the last time we saw her doing the job she was sent to Collinwood to do?

Here we have the DS writers once again reaching back to the classics for inspiration - in this case, way back, to the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice's ill-fated trip through the Underworld.

I only hope the original Eurydice wasn't quite as annoying as Amanda is here. I kept having to turn the volume down every time she screamed.

More than any other episode, I think, this one shows how often Dark Shadows' ambitions outstripped its technical ability to realize them. At least they were smart to keep the Leviathan creature off screen for the duration. When you don't have the budget or technology necessary to visualize something properly, it's certainly better to leave it to the audience's imagination. No episode demonstrates that better than this one.

Brian Sturdivant has only three acting credits listed on imdb (including four episodes on DS, this one and three upcoming ones as Claude North) all in 1970 and 1971. It's interesting how some careers take off and others never do. But it's kind of cool to at least have been on something that people are still watching almost a half century later - and still wondering whatever became of that person.

I agree that, when it was used for dramatic purposes, it could be quite effective.

What I objected to the most was when Vicki first arrived in 1795 and stopped dead in her tracks every time she bumped into a new character, declaring in tones of amazement, "_________________ {fill in the blank with name from person in the 20th Century}." It became almost comical after awhile. I wanted to respond each time, "Yea, we get it that the new characters are being played by actors who played different roles in the present. We really don't have to pretend that they are actual doppelgangers of the future characters." In this case, the concept wasn't used for dramatic purposes and just became silly and annoying. Luckily, by the time of their second trip to the past (1897), it had been largely dropped.

Julia shows her impressive skill at multi-tasking in this episode, going from one mind-boggling crisis to another without missing a beat. What DID the good people of Collinwood do before she got there?

This conceit of having Vicki comment on the physical resemblance of people from the past and their counterparts in the present never worked for me, partly because it was applied so inconsistently.  Why, for instance, does Vicki notice the similarities while Barnabas never does? The closest he ever comes is linking Burke with Jeremiah at one point. It's not like Barnabas thinks, "Damn, it's Mom and Dad," when he first meets Elizabeth and Roger. And Roger certainly doesn't see any echo of Matthew Morgan in Professor Stokes when he meets the latter in this episode.

It would have been better for everyone to just ignore the physical similarities and just have the audience suspend their disbelief which is pretty much SOP for DS anyway.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I find myself feeling really sorry for Burke in these episodes. I mean, it's only a few days since Vicki received verification of his death (to everyone but Vicki anyway), yet no one so much as mentions his name or wonders how Vicki could so quickly have both forgotten him and transferred all her grieving to this nebulous figure from the past, Peter Bradford. I don't think it reflects well on anyone, Vicki included.

I was surprised to see Carolyn sans scarf in this episode, with her mark-free neck fully exposed for all to see. How long does it take for vampire marks to disappear, I wonder?

Tony's insinuation that Carolyn may be having an affair with her own cousin strikes me as very provocative for '60s daytime television.

I like the way Carolyn pleads with Barnabas to let her live her life and not waste her youth serving him. A poignant moment.

Will always remember her as Benjamin's mother in "The Graduate." Loved her squeal of delight when her son tells her he's marrying Elaine - that is, till he informs her that he hasn't actually asked Elaine and that she pretty much hates him. Iconic movie moment.

This time around, I decided to skip the episodes set in 1795, so I, essentially ended up watching Ep 365 back-to-back with Ep. 461. The most disconcerting aspect was watching Vicki go from mourning Burke one day to calling out for Peter in her sleep the next. I can only imagine what Liz and Julia were thinking, since to them no real time had passed.

Random thought. Vicki lying in her bed talking to Barnabas reminds me of Dorothy in the final scene of "The Wizard of Oz," as she tries to make sense of her "dream." Even her hand gestures seem to match the ones used by Judy Garland.

A lot of character inconsistency abounds at this point in the series.

Every episode now it seems we're confronted with a character who scoffs at the very notion of the supernatural - even though they've all been through a phoenix and several ghosts at this point. Today it's Roger's turn.

And speaking of Roger, his expressed distaste for seances stands in marked contrast to a few months back when he pretty much ruined Barnabas' food-free costume ball by rudely insisting they all participate in an exercise to contact the dead.

I like the way AM adopts the speech patterns of little Sarah in her moments of possession. Quite impressive.

It seems to be a chronic condition. In the very next episode, Julia tells herself there are no ghosts, then a few scenes later, she's searching for and eventually chatting with Sarah, who she knows is Barnabas' little sister!

I guess it's true that consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds - literally, it would appear, in the case of DS. [snow_wink]

We can tell that Carolyn was not  a fan of "Bewitched," since Barnabas has to define what a warlock is to the "naive" girl.

Once again, a character expresses the belief that such crazy things as ghosts and magic couldn't possibly exist even though she is talking to a VAMPIRE (!) when she says it. I guess her recent experiences with Laura and Sarah have been somehow wiped from her memory.
