Quentin rescues Maggie from her nightmare but won't tell him what it was about. Do you want me to stay here? he asks. She heroically refuses even though he’s still wearing that fab blue jacket. You have so much work to do, she reminds him (and he only works when she’s at home anyway).

Angelique is doing some professional reading ("The Seventh Level of Witchcraft") when Maggie comes downstairs the next morning. Maggie spots the round table where Collinses in any dimension conduct their séances. Without saying anything about her dream--did Ange induce it?--she wonders why Quentin would strangle Angelique. "Alexis" says she heard a silly story about Angelique and Bruno, but everyone knew that Angelique was devoted to Quentin. Quentin loved her, but his love made him insane--even the idea of her with Bruno drove him almost mad. If he had loved her less-- She finally breaks off with false concern when she sees that Maggie is getting more and more upset. Quentin didn’t kill Angelique, she finishes, he loved her far too much. She apologizes to Maggie, who says, What for? You were only telling the truth. Angelique is quite pleased when Maggie leaves quickly, turning her face aside so that Angelique won’t see the tears.

Later, Quentin is annoyed when he sees a bushel of RSVPs for a costume ball that Elizabeth insists on having. "Alexis" thinks it would be a great way for Maggie to meet his friends. Quentin completely disagrees and storms out, but Ange is pleased with how things are going.

Maggie confides in Cyrus, who almost gives himself away. Unconsciously he takes her hand in both of his and caresses it gently as he comments, Well, you’ve been through so much. I just wish there was more that I could do. Just talking to you has done more than you can ever imagine, she tells him gratefully. I do believe you. I’m glad to hear it, he replies. Suddenly he realizes what he’s doing and hastily releases her hand. I wonder if you know how kind you really are, she says, and thanks him again. You’re welcome, he answers, stammering, And don’t... don’t hesitate to come back here and, and, and visit me if there is anything more I can do. I won’t forget, Maggie promises as she looks up into his eyes and smiles. He looks back, standing very close to her. Is something wrong? she asks. It’s the way you keep looking at me. Instantly he backs away with a joke about “absent-minded Cyrus Longworth, staring at something without know what he was staring at.” He gives her an apologetic little bow. She thanks him again and goes upstairs as he watches, surprised at his reaction to her. He turns back to his desk and notices that Maggie has left her gloves behind. He calls out and starts after her but hears the front door close. Quite deliberately he presses the gloves to his face, inhaling her perfume. He rubs his cheek against them gently as he shuts his eyes.

Elizabeth Eis really shines here! Cyrus's next visitor is Buffie, who insists that he knows more about Yaeger than he's letting on. You must think I’m some kind of a fool. What kind of work could John Yeager do for you? If he picked up a test tube, he would break it! Miss Harrington! Cyrus says. You used to call me Buffie, she reminds him. All right--Buffie, Cyrus says perfunctorily. Whatever association John Yaeger and I have is strictly between us. No, it’s not, says the shrewd Buffie: You know what I think? I’ve guessed what he does for you--he lives. Cyrus is completely taken aback, but she presses on: That's right. He lives while you work. He’s having a ball while you’re making pretty colors in these test tubes. You wouldn't need John Yeager at all if you would just let yourself go. She walks up to him, puts her hands on his shoulders, and presses herself against him gently, saying, Come on and try. No, thanks, Miss Harrington, Cyrus says, walking away from her. She laughs a bit acridly as she comments, So, it's Miss Harrington again, with no, thanks. She picks up Maggie’s fine gloves and asks him, You wouldn't have said that to the person who owns these, would you? Outraged, he grabs them from her and admits that they belong to Maggie Collins. Was she visiting you? Buffie asks. She just dropped by, he huffs. You don't have to get so defensive about it, she says and adds, Funny, I knew her when she was growing up here, before they moved. She comes back married to Quentin Collins--and I meet John Yeager, she finishes bitterly. Cyrus is fascinated and asks Buffie if she knew Maggie well when she was a child. Getting more and more bitterly sarcastic as she goes on, Buffie says, I always knew that she would be somebody special. She was so bright... so pretty... so ladylike. Buffie looks at her reflection in the mirror and adds, I bet when she looks in the mirror before she goes to bed, she doesn't hate herself. And there, Dr. Longworth, you have a vital clue to Buffie Harrington--who isn't ladylike at all, she winds up with painful self-loathing. She turns back to Cyrus and says, Look--Yeager, he tried to make me into a lady. I thought he was kidding when he gave me these. She takes a string of pearls from around her neck and gazes at them. The first time I wore them he grabbed me and broke the string. That's what kind of a gentleman _he_ is. Well, I had them restrung. Only I will never be a lady. You’ve reminded me of that. She hands the pearls to Cyrus and says, Give them back to him when you see him. I’ll stay in my league, and let Maggie Collins stay in hers. She storms upstairs and out of the lab. Cyrus is still holding the pearls, and now he picks up Maggie’s gloves, weighing them in his hands just like when the Clarence Darrow character at the end of Inherit the Wind weighs the Bible and the Origin of Species.

Quentin finds Maggie reading the witchcraft book and tells her to stop her obsession with witchcraft. It’s hard not to be obsessed, Maggie replies, considering everything that’s been happening lately. Quentin tells her to stop anyway, then storms off, probably to find someone else to yell at. He just misses Cyrus. I was just driving by, he says, and I’ve come to return your gloves. That’s very dear of you, she tells him. It’s really nothing, he mutters. But it was very thoughtful of you, she insists, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. She reaches out and touches his arm. He turns away, deeply stirred that she touched him, and again stammers that he was just driving by. She invites him to stay awhile. I’d better not, he answers. I have so many things to do. As usual, Maggie says with a smile, and says goodnight.

Cyrus goes straight to the wall safe and takes out the Yaegerade, then stops to consider why he shouldn’t do what he’s considering: No, I mustn't, I know I mustn't. She is Quentin's wife. He is my best friend. He has been all my life. But Buffie is right. So soft and so quiet. So special, he sighs with longing. What did Yeager achieve with Buffie? he goes on. Nothing! Nothing at all! But with Maggie... oh, ho, ho... with Maggie.... He smiles with unseemly anticipation, then dashes away from the wall safe. I mustn’t do it, he tells himself again. There must be limits for John Yaeger. Then he decides, There are no limits for John Yaeger. He wouldn’t give in so easily. Cyrus’s mild face takes on a sinister aspect as he tells himself, He would never keep saying, over and over, no, no, no! His word is yes! Nothing stands in his way, nothing! He runs back to the safe, opens it again, takes out the Yaegerade and drinks it off before he can change his mind.

Next thing we know, Yaeger phones Maggie at Collinwood. She is suspicious when he won’t give his name, but he tells he, I know you’re interested in two séances. Again she asks who it is, but he asks, Isn’t the opportunity you’ve been waiting for? I’m not interested in them anymore, Maggie says hastily. He says smoothly, If you change your mind, you can meet me at the docks at six o’clock--sharp. I have no intention of going there, Maggie retorts indignantly. Would you rather meet someplace where we can be seen and overheard? he asks. Six o’clock, Mrs. Collins, the docks, he says and hangs up the phone with an anticipatory smile.

Yaeger (in the unbuttoned suede overcoat for this special occasion) is at the docks, checking his watch (he’s a real stickler for punctuality) when he spots Buffie on her way to work. I don’t want anything to do with you at all! she declares. That’s fine with me, he replies. But I want to thank you for returning the necklace--now I know what a mistake it was to give it to a person such as you. Stung in spite of herself but trying to hide it, Buffie says, I didn’t want it anyway. Of course you didn’t want it, he says. It wasn’t cheap and vulgar enough for you, was it? She is too hurt to reply, and he continues, Oh, well, I tried to make a lady out of you, you see, but I must reluctantly concede my defeat. Buffie quickly runs off, hiding her tears, which Yaeger finds uproariously funny.

A moment later, Maggie appears. Well, Mrs. Collins, good evening, he says. Are you the gentleman who phoned me? she asks. At your service, he answers. Who are you? she asks again. Your friend, Mrs. Collins, he replies, your friend. Then tell me what you have to tell me, she says, obviously hoping to get away from him as fast as possible even on such short acquaintance. He leers at her and agrees, Oh yes, I will tell you. I was only going to say that I find you inescapably charming. In that case, goodnight, she says and starts to walk away. Your husband! he says, stopping her in her tracks. You husband was seen choking his wife at the séance. Go on, Maggie says tensely. I will go on, he says, but I hope you know that I am doing you a very big favor in giving you all of this information. [Actually he says, You’re doing me--I’m doing you a very big favor.] I was wondering if you would give me a favor too. As he moves closer and closer to her, still leering, she begins to realize what he means. She starts to back away, but he’s far too quick and far too strong. He grabs her with one arm and covers her mouth with his other hand. Struggling uselessly to free herself, she twists her face out of his reach. Let me go! she cries. Soon enough, Mrs. Collins, soon enough, he replies as he starts to move against her. With his other hand he-- well, it’s out of camera range, but it cannot be very gentlemanly at all because Maggie struggles with all her might to get away. But her struggles only seem to increase his perverse enjoyment, and he holds her even tighter....

Joey, I've always wondered about that! I assume it was a network announcer rather than someone on the show.

Yes, it's too bad about Buffie. She already had enough to deal with before Barn put the bite on her. He's had about 175 years to hone his self-preservation skills and gets out his predicament pretty easily. He gets Cyrus to believe he was on this street for some other reason and sends him packing, then tells Buffie to avoid Cyrus. She enthusiastically agrees.

Quentin is wearing a royal blue sports jacket that must have set female hearts aflutter back in 1970. One wonders how PT Collinsport Enterprises keeps going, since he stays home whenever he's arguing with Maggie.

Quentin goes to answer a knock at the door. The visitor is Cyrus. Bursting into the foyer, he starts, I have the results of the autopsy-- but he is struck speechless when he sees Quentin’s beautiful wife holding a bouquet of lovely flowers. Suddenly clutching his hands, he manages to compliment her on the flowers without looking directly at her. I can tell you want to talk with Quentin alone, she says graciously, and gives Cyrus a smile before she takes herself off upstairs, leaving the flowers on the foyer table. Cyrus turns back to look at her as he follows Quentin into the drawing room, and takes in a last glimpse of her going upstairs as he shuts the drawing-room doors. He tells Quentin, The autopsy showed the cause of death was indeterminate--except for one incredible thing: Horace Chase’s [what he says] body temperature was extremely low--as if he had frozen to death.

Of course Quentin and Cyrus don't even notice the dead flowers after Ange has frozen them to death--at least not until uentin turns to go back to the drawing room, then stops in his tracks as he notices the dead flowers. Maggie returns downstairs at the same time and is equally surprised. Then “Alexis” arrives with the vase. She pretends disappointment, saying, How pretty the flowers looked when _Maggie_ was holding them only a few moments ago. Quentin looks vaguely troubled, but Angelique is smirking.

It's one o'clock when Cyrus returns, supposedly to make sure that Buffie is all right. She gives him the brushoff, saying she’s really busy. There was a time, Cyrus comments, when I thought you found my company more enjoyable. Do you find _Barnabas Collins_ interesting? I’m really busy, Buffie insists. Just as Cyrus is about to go out the door, she asks, Have you heard from John Yaeger? Do you miss him? Cyrus asks. Oh, I was just curious, she answers. I haven’t heard from him, Cyrus answers with a strange smile as he departs, but if I do, you’ll be the first to know. She’s admiring the punctures on her neck when the man who put them there suddenly materializes. How do you know about John Yaeger? Barnabas asks. She turns around to find Barnabas standing there, so presumably it’s 1:00 a.m., not 1:00 p.m.

Barn is suprised to learn that Cyrus and Yaeger are acquainted. Buffie says, The doctor knows Yaeger better than anyone. Yaeger helped Dr. Longworth with his experiments. I bet he can tell you where Yaeger is right now. It would please you to know that, wouldn’t it? Barnabas asks. I never want to see Yaeger again, Buffie assures him hastily. I want to see Yaeger as soon as possible, Barnabas says. (You’ll remember that Yaeger came within an ace of opening Barnabas’s coffin in the basement of Loomis House.) Despite his earlier order that Buffie should stay away from Cyrus, now he wants Buffie to find out all she can about Yaeger from him. He warns her to make sure Yaeger doesn’t learn their secret, but he must find Yaeger.

Back at Collinwood, "Alexis" comments to Maggie that isn't it interesting that Quentin is insisting that Angelique wasn't murdered. Is it because he did it? But I would NEVER suggest that Quentin murdered Angelique, oh no precious, not at all, so you must forget I ever said anything about it. Maggie agrees almost mechanically, and “Alexis” takes the opportunity to reiterate that Angelique was Quentin’s wife, and he loved her, so he couldn’t have killed her. Not if he loved her--could he? Maggie shakes her head no, but she is full of doubt now.

Later that evening (must be 3:00 a.m. by now), Buffie has asked Cyrus over. He is a bit surprised at her invitation. She says she wants to apologize for blowing him off so rudely earlier. She has some things that Yaeger gave her but that she wants to give back to him. Does Cyrus have his address? So it’s John Yaeger that you’ve been thinking about, Cyrus notes. Only to give his things back and then forget about him, Buffie says. Are you really sure you don’t want to see Yaeger again? Cyrus asks. Yes, answers Buffie, could you please tell me where he is? With another strange smile Cyrus answers, I have the feeling, Miss Harrington, a very distinct feeling, that if you wait long enough you will be seeing John Yeager fairly soon. After he leaves, Buffie reflects, He knows more than he’s telling me--I’m sure of that. Why is he protecting Yeager? I’ve got to try again.

Even later, Maggie is finally tucked in bed but not having pleasant dreams at all. In fact, Angelique has caused her to see the famous séance. As Maggie watches, spellbound, Quentin rises from his place at the table and starts to strangle Angelique. Someone off camera starts screaming, Murder! Murder! Maggie wakes, sits bolt upright and screams, No, Quentin! No! She was your wife! She was your wife!...

Ha ha ha, that's a great idea about Cyrus/Yaeger and Sabrina/Buffie. Cyrus certainly is attracted to Buffie, or he would be if he let himself.

Poor Larry. But Angelique checks his marital status first. He tells her he's the "last of the bachelors, and proud of it!" just before she kills him. Poor Will stumbles in and gabbles at her to stay calm. She turns away to hide her smile.

Meanwhile the good doctor is headed for his wall safe. Taking out a bottle of Yaegerade (the red stuff), he wonders, Do I miss John Yaeger that much? Do I need to commit another murder? He starts to put it away then thinks to himself, No, this time I will be different. This time I will just see Buffie. At that moment Will phones, urging him to come to Collinwood right away. Saved, saved, Cyrus murmurs as he puts the Yaegerade back in the safe with trembling hands.

Death seems mysteriously attracted to this his, Barnabas comments as he eyes "Alexis." Why are you looking at me when you say that? she asks angrily, the malice showing for once. Playing peacemaker, Will says “Alexis” is still understandably upset. He tries to get Barnabas to say he didn’t mean it, but Barnabas says, I was thinking of the strange mysteries around here. You yourself are one of those mysteries, aren’t you, Mr. Collins? Angelique says with a knowing smirk. A moment later Cyrus arrives. Will offers to show Cyrus the body, but Angelique insists on talking to Cyrus (whom she greets as “Mister Longworth,“ not “Doctor Longworth”) herself, since she was the last person to see Larry alive.

Will is worried that Barn is interested in "Alexis," but Barn quickly busts that theory and leaves, thinking about his lust for blood.

Angelique is nearly frantic when she finds out that (1) there will be an autopsy; and (2) Cyrus won't be doing it. So she has no way to influence the results.

After Cyrus leaves, Will refreshes himself with a drink but nearly chokes on it when Angelique asks him, How well do you know Barnabas? Not well, he answers. Why did Barnabas come to Collinsport? Angelique asks. He read my book about his ancestor, Will replies, twitching his collar up higher. Angelique continues to question Will rather closely about Barnabas. He doesn’t give much away, but it’s obvious to her that this subject makes Will very, very nervous, so she knows there must be more to Barnabas Collins than meets the eye.

Barn chats up Buffie, regaling her with tales of his travels and making her wish she could travel too. He tells her about parallel time, and she hopes her opposite number is having a better time than she is--with apologies to Barnabas. Buffie hears a customer come in and gets up, promising to come back to Barnabas’s table. The customer is Cyrus Longworth, on his way back to Collinwood from the morgue. He’s certainly surprised to see Barnabas (1) there at all; and (2) evidently pleased with the Eagle’s wait-staff. Cyrus turns down Buffie’s offer of a drink. Have you seen John Yaeger recently? he asks. Is he back in town? Buffie asks with displeasure. You told me he wasn’t coming back. With a nervous laugh, Cyrus says, Yaeger is a very unpredictable fellow. I know that, Buffie answers ironically. Cyrus offers Barnabas a lift back to Collinwood, is politely turned down, and leaves. I think he came into the Eagle to see you, Barnabas opines to Buffie. She laughs at this notion. I’m sure I’m right, Barnabas insists politely. You’re very pretty. (Evidently he reserves “beautiful” exclusively for Maggie Collins.) Barnabas asks about closing time, and Buffie tells him in about an hour. Moving quite close to her, Barnabas offers to take her home. That would be very nice, Buffie replies. Barnabas is close enough that he nearly bites her. Abruptly he tells her he’ll come back in an hour and leaves.

Cyrus has brought "Alexis" a sedative, and she uncharacteristically goes straight upstairs to bed. Will has managed to get drunk and reminisces about hanging out at the Eagle in the old days. I am afraid that you wouldn't find much company there except for your _friend_, Cyrus says. What friend? Will asks. Barnabas Collins, Cyrus replies, with as much jealousy as he can permit himself to acknowledge. I stopped in there tonight, Cyrus goes on, and he was there with _the girl_ that works there. They were alone together. Luckily for Cyrus, Will doesn’t notice the indignation that has crept into his voice, because Will has reasons of his own for thinking this is very bad news. Buffie, Will mutters and dashes out without a word of explanation. He rushes into the Eagle and is horrified to learn that Barnabas will be back to take Buffie home. Buffie! he says urgently, stepping closer, but before he can warn her Barnabas returns. Will makes the excuse that he just stopped by to offer Barnabas a ride back to Collinwood. I’m not going home now, Barnabas replies pointedly. Will scurries out without having even one drink. Buffie decides it’s closing time, and Barnabas watches with an anticipatory smile as she turns down the lights.

Evidently Will hasn’t gotten drunk enough at Collinwood, so he adjourns to Cyrus’s lab to finish the job. Cyrus is glad of the company tonight. Will reminds Cyrus, We had a conversation once about good and evil. I thought you didn’t know anything about evil. You were wrong, Cyrus tells him. We all have evil inside of us. I think it is best if we just admit it and let it out! That sounds to me like your friend John Yaeger, Will comments. Do you know him? Cyrus asks in alarm. I don’t know him personally, Will replies. I just saw him somewhere once, and Quentin identified him from my description. Where is he now? Will asks. He’s waiting, Cyrus replies. What?! Will exclaims in surprise. Waiting somewhere, waiting to come back, Cyrus replies, turning away with an almost sly smile: You know, he and I are much more alike than you think. Of course the only difference is that I work and he plays. I do what I should, and he just does what he wants. [I suppose the similarity here is in their consistency of character.] It sounds like you’re jealous, Will opines, adding, You should let yourself go sometime and have fun, just have a ball. I wouldn’t know where to begin, Cyrus says, looking down with a nervous laugh. Why don’t you do what your friend Yaeger does, Will suggests. Just think of what you want to do at that moment, and then do it. Cyrus thinks this is a mighty fine idea, and he’s going to go out and do it right now!

Barnabas has escorted Buffie back to her room. I’ve always planned to fix things up, she says apologetically. [She has kept a relic of her childhood innocence in the form of a Raggedy Ann doll.] Always the gentleman, Barnabas steers the conversation away from the general decor to admire a certain landscape painting on the wall above the fireplace. I like it sometimes, Buffie says, but when I think of the person who gave it to me, I don’t like it that much. Barnabas turns down her offer of a drink and fixes his gaze on her eyes. Evidently all too accustomed to this sort of encounter, Buffie comments, You have the strangest eyes I have ever seen. It’s like you can see right through me. His eyes are not strange enough to keep her from resting her head on his shoulder, so Barnabas sinks his teeth into her neck. She gives a little scream, but goes limp as he drinks deeply. At that very moment someone knocks on the door. Barnabas drops Buffie in surprise. He doesn’t have time even to think about changing into a bat when the door opens, disclosing to the surprised Cyrus the spectacle of Barnabas standing there with Buffie collapsed on the floor (and showing quite a bit of leg) at his feet....

Angelique and Maggie are in the master bedroom (Maggie is unpacking) when Ange starts to feel cold. I'm assuming that like most villains, Ange wants to take her time getting rid of Maggie so that she can enjoy it to the fullest. Just stealing Maggie's warmth would be too fast--and would leave Ange with too much explaining to do.

GH does a good job as Hoffman complaining about Maggie: I hate taking orders from her. Angelique (now sporting a new hairdo) counsels patience and says that it's all going according to plan.

Cyrus makes a house call--now we know it's Parallel Time! Quentin tells him about finding the clay doll in Maggie's suitcase. At least Cyrus suggests that maybe somebody planted it. I did tell you that your attack was caused by something supernatural. Impatient and angry at first, Quentin says resignedly, I shouldn’t be surprised about anything that happens at Collinwood anymore. Cyrus suggests Quentin investigate. Quentin agrees and thanks him. Cyrus is about to return to the lab when Quentin says, Something has been puzzling me. Larry Chase said you had asked him to change your will. I want to know why. All of Cyrus’s quiet authority on matters scientific and supernatural instantly drains away as he answers evasively. Quentin asks bluntly, Does your changing the will have anything to do with John Yaeger? Cyrus looks away guiltily before he stammers, John Yaeger is gone forever. I told Yaeger I had no more use for him in my experiments. I told him to go away and never come back. I’ll call Larry Chase and have him revise the will again. A relieved smile overspreads Quentin’s face as he walks Cyrus out.

"Alexis" checks to see whether Maggie is falling apart yet and gushes that she wants them to be good friends. But she's miffed when she finds out that no one told Maggie that Angelique was murdered. This is "Alexis"'s cue to retell the story about the second séance, listing the attendees: Elizabeth, Roger, Sabrina, Cyrus, Bruno, Quentin and “Alexis” herself. She describes how Sabrina went into a trance and revealed that someone in the room murdered Angelique. Maggie ponders the list and asks if “Alexis” thinks it’s true. “Alexis” is in the middle of declaring that Angelique was much too young and healthy to die of a stroke when she suddenly feels a chill. With a few garbled words she runs out the door. Maggie wonders, Why didn’t Quentin--or anyone else--tell me that Angelique was murdered?

Quentin has summoned Hoffman to the drawing room and declares that he’s reopening the subject of Hoffman’s appearance in the master bedroom. He asks, Did you place anything in the bedroom? Hoffman becomes increasingly cold and distant as she reiterates her concern for Mrs. Collins’s safety. Sternly Quentin tells her to answer the question. She answers no and adds, I’m beginning to be sorry I was concerned about Mrs. Collins’s safety. My integrity and motives have never been questioned before, she huffs. I thought that you at least believed I was loyal and honest. I do, Quentin agrees. I can only say that this didn't happen with the first Mrs. Collins, Hoffman starts. She-- I know what you’re going to say, Quentin interrupts, freezing her in her tracks. Will that be all, sir? she asks. Yes, Quentin answers and adds, Now you may consider the incident closed.

Calling frantically to Hoffman, Angelique, now very, very cold and muffled in a shawl, runs downstairs to the drawing room and huddles by the fire. Hoffman arrives, and Angelique says, The cold has come on me again. I must have warmth to survive. I want you to find someone for me. No! Hoffman says, appalled. If I go back to the tomb again, I will never reawaken, Angelique reminds her. Hoffman still says no. I have very little time left, Angelique says. The next person that walks through the door will give me the warmth I need. And if you fail me, you will be the next victim. Horrified, Hoffman realizes Angelique means it and leaves. Angelique crouches before the fire again, but even the open flames bring her no warmth. Mentally she begs Hoffman to find someone for her, and hurry. Suddenly the front doorknob begins to turn. Who will it be? Angelique wonders, caring only that the perishing cold she feels will soon be ended......

In the fabulous novel Rebecca, Maxim de Winter is equally oblivious of any problems his young second wife is having with the sinister Mrs. Danvers. The first-person narrator of Rebecca is the new Mrs. de Winter. In a deft ironic touch, we never learn her own name--even the novel is named after the first Mrs. D.

Even when Barn first appeared in RT, he was feeding on animals rather than the townsfolk. It wasn't the same as human blood, but I guess he can make do if he has to.

Somewhere along the line, the color video of this show must have gotten lost, maybe? alwaysdavid, were you in Alaska at the time?

All the actors might have had a little more time to memorize their lines during the movie shoot. I imagine the daily grind of the TV show was really tough on them. With KLS back, everyone has returned to the show, yay!

There certainly were a lot of  moments like that! Plus all the overhead mics, stagehands on the set, wobbly staircases and all. That's what gives the show its own special brand of charm, at least for me.

At the hospital, Quentin is getting ready to go home after his miraculous cure. Cyrus tells him, I  can no longer find anything wrong. You’re in perfect physical condition, he tells Quentin. (And legions of Quentin fans everywhere would agree!) And mentally? Quentin asks. You’re as well balanced as anyone I know, answers Cyrus (LOL!).

Quentin wonders what caused his attack in the first place. Cyrus is sure it was something supernatural, even though they've just buried Dameon Edwards. Cyrus answers, I’m sure it was a living person using black magic and witchcraft. Totally oblivious of the effect he’s having on Quentin, in his quiet, clinical, lecturer’s voice he details various methods that can be used. There are any number of weapons used to practice black magic, he says: A crude doll figure representing the likeness of the victims is probably the most common. Pins can be stuck into the doll, and the victim will feel intense pain. I saw a man die that way once, in Africa, he tells Quentin. He’s just getting into potions, curses and spell-casting when Quentin stops him. You’ve guessed that the attack wasn’t caused by a supernatural being but by a real person, Quentin says. A real person using supernatural methods, Cyrus agrees. Of course Cyrus has no idea who Quentin’s ill-wisher might be. Could it be someone close to me, someone at Collinwood, perhaps? Quentin wonders. It could be anyone, Cyrus replies, then tells Quentin he’s free to go home and get some rest.

Barnabas almost literally bumps into Maggie, who is about to tell him about last night when Quentin phones to say he's coming home. Most respectfully he asks, May I keep you company while you wait for Quentin? She agrees, and they pass to the drawing room. Desire and guilt (and perhaps relief) flicker over his face as he turns away from her to close the drawing room doors. Meanwhile, Hoffman listens from the servants' door and is pleased at how well the plan is going. All this time the front doors are wide open.

Barnabas and Maggie are getting along just fine. Maggie confides that she thinks Quentin really, really loved Angelique. She was very beautiful.  And so are you--if I may say so, Barnabas answers, unable to keep the desire out of his voice. Maggie innocently thanks him and adds, If everyone had been as kind to me when I first arrived here as you have been tonight, I don’t think I would have left. Just then the foyer clock chimes 4:30 and Quentin arrives. [The front doors are closed.] Maggie runs to his arms. Barnabas takes himself off, with the sight of Maggie and Quentin’s embrace to keep his undead heart warm.

Maggie barely gives Quentin time to take a breath when she demands that he fire Hoffman. I’m sure she has some explanation for coming into the master bedroom, Quentin says. There’s something frightening about that woman, Maggie insists. I’m sure Hoffman has been trying to get me out of the house from the moment I arrived. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about, and Hoffman has been such a fixture for so many years. And talk of the devil,        Hoffman walks in on them, saying, I heard my name mentioned. Maggie sticks to her guns at first and reiterates her charge to Hoffman’s face. We haven’t gotten on ideally, Hoffman admits to Quentin. I feel that Mrs. Collins would like me to leave. Maggie suddenly panics and backs down, saying, The only thing I truly resent about Hoffman is her stubborn loyalty to someone who is dead! Her shock at her own words seems to unnerve her. (She has gotten braver but not brave enough--not yet.) Quentin employs his usual method of conflict resolution: He tells them both to forget the incident, go to sleep and make a fresh start in the morning. After he and Maggie go upstairs, we see Hoffman reach for the phone again despite the time.

Upstairs Maggie tells Quentin, Something about Hoffman frightens me, but I don’t know what. Are you frightened of me? Quentin asks. Maggie hugs him as she tells him, I feel safe as long as you’re here. Why don’t we get ready for bed, Quentin suggests. Sadly, this DOESN’T mean they start ripping each other’s clothes off --it’s 1970, remember. Quentin loosens his tie while standing at the foot of the bed, with Maggie’s suitcase on a bench. Absently he looks into the suitcase and sees a little clay doll and one of his own handkerchiefs. Cyrus’s calm, lecturing voice echoes in his mind: There are any number of weapons used to practice black magic: A crude doll figure representing the likeness of the victims is probably the most common. Pins can be stuck into the doll and the victim will feel intense pain. I once saw a man die that way. He glances over at the blissfully unaware Maggie, who with her back to him has started to take off her blouse (we get a quick glimpse of bare shoulder, which seems funny after all the leg those miniskirts show), and then Cyrus’s words echo in his mind again: I saw a man die that way.......

I think Barn has become conscience stricken about RT Maggie and feels a certain amount of guilt about what he almost succeeded in doing to her. Anyway, that's the best explanation I can come up with.

His sadness increasing with every moment he watches the young marrieds, Barnabas finally pulls himself together and asks Maggie to excuse him. Maggie says, Elizabeth told me how wonderful you’ve been. With manly modesty he replies, Quentin’s recovery will be thanks enough. Quentin pulls himself up to add, Of course you’re welcome at Collinwood.

Maggie and Quentin throw themselves into each other's arms as Quentin's strength returns. He promises that nothing will hurt them again. Barn listens miserably outside the drawing room doors.

Meanwhile, in PT, Loomis House has electricity, so there's a phone somewhere, and Will and Carolyn know about Quentin's heart attack. Carolyn and Will are arguing. Carolyn refuses to be Barn's slave and threatens to expose him. Will pleads with her not to. If you want to stay a slave, you can go right ahead, she retorts. Barnabas only wants to get back to his own time, Will pleads. Then we can forget that this ever happened. He’ll never get back, Carolyn retorts, and I’m not going to wait another minute. I strongly suggest that you do, says Barnabas, who has suddenly materialized behind them. I have been here long enough to hear words I would have preferred not to have heard. His shadow falls across Carolyn, who screams as he comes within biting range.

Will begs Carolyn to tell Barn she didn't mean it, but she defiantly says that she does. When he expresses concern for Quentin, she taunts Barn that he isn't related to anyone at Collinwood. He replies calmly that he considers any Collins a relation, including PT Carolyn. You’re not a Collins, Carolyn says, even angrier than before. You’re not even human! Will angrily warns her to stop. She runs to his arms, declaring, We can’t live this way! Barnabas observes quietly, One does not always choose the circumstances under which he lives. No one knows that better than I. Go away and leave us alone, Carolyn says miserably. This is the one place than can give me a chance to get back to my own time, Barnabas replies. I must speak to Will alone. Carolyn looks at Barnabas and then at Will, who nods reassuringly. Barnabas warns Carolyn once more: If you expose me, it will mean your and Will’s destruction. As Carolyn turns to leave, Will grabs her hand and kisses it. You wouldn’t! Carolyn says as she leaves the room. I would without hesitation, Barnabas replies simply. Realizing he is telling the truth, she leaves.

Barn orders Will to open the cupboard under the stairs and orders him not to let him (B.) leave. While they listen as Maggie comes by and tells Carolyn the good news about Quentin, Will finally realizes why. Listening to Maggie sing Barn's praises has the predictable effect, and he orders Will to open the panel, but he brandishes the cross, forcing Barnabas to turn aside even as he orders Will to put it away. For reasons best known to herself, Carolyn opens the panel, unaware of Barnabas’s plight. Despite Carolyn’s screams, Barnabas seizes the opportunity to conk Will a few times with his cane, simply because he is available and even though he is not the real object of Barnabas’s anger. A few quick steps take him outside the house, without a thought for Will and Carolyn. As the dogs howl all around him, whatever remorse he may feel is quickly overwhelmed by desire as he starts determinedly for Collinwood.

Will lies on the sofa while Carolyn tends to his injuries. He tells Carolyn of the danger, and she agrees to warn Maggie.

Barnabas is just outside the front door at Collinwood, still trying to resist temptation. He slips into the shadows when he hears running footsteps, but when he sees it’s Carolyn, he warns her of the consequences of interfering. He is about to demonstrate, but from inside the house, Maggie has heard them talking and opens the door. With Barnabas concealed but listening, Carolyn lamely says she forgot to ask if there was anything she and Will could do to help. No, Maggie says, but thank you for asking. You might want to go to the hospital to stay with Quentin, Carolyn suggests with all the daring she can muster. Quentin insisted I come home, Maggie replies. Carolyn leaves, bitterly aware of her failure. After Maggie shuts the front door, the dogs howl again as Barnabas looks up at the bedroom windows in anticipation of conquest. For a moment, he turns sad, thinking, Will failed to stop me, and so I punished him, even though he was acting on my orders. Now Carolyn has failed too. But he is not deterred for long.

Sometime later (at 3:15), Maggie is sleeping peacefully in bed. (They can show her in a double bed, since she’s the only one in it.) Suddenly we see a bat hovering just outside the window; a moment later Barnabas has materialized in the room. He studies the sleeping Maggie for a moment; perhaps his innate decency puts up one last struggle. But the struggle is vain. Fangs bared, he leans over the bed to strike....

While Quentin is having his heart attack, Barn tells Elizabeth and "Alexis" to wait outside the drawing room, stereotypically fearful of female hysterics. Once everyone knows that Cyrus is on his way, Elizabeth has time to wonder who this stranger is (they hadn’t met before and she’s never seen the portrait) and what right he had to take such complete and effortless command of the situation. Barnabas puts on his courtliest manners, addresses her as Mrs. Stoddard, and introduces himself as a descendant of the “original” Barnabas. Since he’s a relative, however distant, Elizabeth allows him to escort her from the drawing room.

Elizabeth introduces Cyrus to Barn. "Alexis," horrified that her spell has gone too far, hangs all over Quentin until Cyrus sends everyone out. Inexplicably leaving his bag in the foyer, Cyrus opens Quentin’s shirt to examine him, and we get the teeniest glimpse of chest hair (of which there is far too little on this show) as he puts his ear to Quentin’s chest. Cyrus gets up to shut the drawing room doors, then opens his doctor’s bag (which has teleported into the drawing room). With some difficulty he manages to extract his stethoscope.

Once Cyrus emerges and announces that Quentin hasn't got much time left, "Alexis" races upstairs and undoes her spell.

Meanwhile, Quentin is still screaming with pain. Over Barnabas’s objections, "Alexis" rushes into the drawing room. Cyrus has finally administered an injection, and Quentin is now resting quietly. He will not die, Angelique insists. I don’t think wishing will help, he tells her (little does he know), adding, With each new attack, Quentin gets worse--he has only a few moments left.

Now that Quentin is resting, Elizabeth tells Barn a little bit about Quentin and Maggie's difficulties, and Barn urges her to call Maggie. Elizabeth says, I’m sure Quentin has wanted to see Maggie before, but he has so much pride. Pride? Barnabas wonders. Or is he still in love with Angelique? You know so much about it! Elizabeth observes, but he modestly says, I’ve just been listening very carefully. Elizabeth says, I thought at first that Quentin married Maggie because he couldn’t bear to be alone. Now I don’t know--but I do know that Maggie loves him. So saying, she picks up the phone.

Maggie is about to mail Quentin a letter about getting a divorce when she gets Elizabeth's phone call. Instantly she crumples up the letter and prepares to leave. Welcome back, KLS!

Angelique is still hanging over Quentin while Cyrus takes his pulse. Cyrus says Quentin is weaker, but Angelique reminds him that an hour ago he said Quentin was a goner. Cyrus covers Quentin up again and stands up to face Angelique, bristling as much as Cyrus can bristle (which is almost imperceptibly) as he asks, Are you criticizing me? Of course not, Angelique replies, but gets him to concede that there is some hope. Entirely forgetting Cyrus, she kneels where Cyrus has just knelt and touches Quentin’s hair. Oh, I never thought I would see him like this... helpless, she murmurs. He is still so young. So pale. Quentin was always the strong one. Cyrus turns to look at her as he hears her saying things that the sister of Quentin’s dead wife has no business saying, let alone knowing. Others... others gave into weakness, she murmurs on, oblivious, but not him. He always fought so well. You talk as if you know him well, Cyrus finally comments. Angelique realizes she’s said far too much and covers up by saying, I just feel as though I do. You’re lucky, Cyrus comments. It took me a long time to get to know Quentin, as is true with most people. [As Angelique leaves Quentin and moves toward the camera, her earring falls off.] Still upset, Angelique sighs, I wish there was something that someone could do. It’s all up to Quentin now, Cyrus replies.

Ange rushes out of the drawing room before Elizabeth and Barn can get any info out of her. Barn is starting to wonder who "Alexis" really is--but not wondering enough, I'm afraid. He does note that it was "Alexis" who suggested calling Maggie, but we know why.

Angelique performs a get-well charm in the study by lighting seven candles (pale blue this time) on her aunt’s candelabrum of death and invoking the fire to lift the spell she’s put on Quentin. Just after she’s extinguished the candles, Elizabeth walks in and finds her in the dark. Returning to her “Alexis” mode, Angelique explains, I thought that sitting in the dark would help me feel better (!). We’re all under some stress, Elizabeth agrees and tells her, There’s been no change in Quentin’s condition. Barnabas is sitting with him, since Cyrus was called back to the hospital for an emergency. [So what’s Quentin with his nearly fatal heart attack, chopped liver?] She gently suggests, Since Mrs. Collins will arrive any moment, it might be best for you to stay with your aunt Hannah for a few days. I can’t help remembering that your presence was the reason for Maggie’s leaving. But “Alexis” insists that she must stay till the crisis passes.

Maggie arrives with her little blue suitcase (perhaps Trask is getting her other luggage from the car), but the foyer is empty. As she looks about her, Barnabas emerges from the drawing room. He is stunned when he sees that in this time also, Maggie looks exactly like his lost Josette. At first Maggie thinks Barnabas is the doctor, but he tells her that Quentin is sleeping and introduces himself with a modest smile. Elizabeth comes out from the study, and Maggie throws herself into her arms with thanks. Angelique looks with actual longing down the hall, sad at being left out, and decides she has to see her Hated Rival. Maggie is disappointed to learn that Quentin didn’t ask for her, even though Barnabas and Elizabeth explain that he hasn’t said much of anything and has had great pain. Quentin may not want to see me, Maggie warns them. I’m sure he will, Barnabas says encouragingly. Now Angelique joins them. Of course “Alexis” has already met and must greet “Mrs. Collins,” who addresses her as “Miss Stokes.” Maggie decides to sit with Quentin, and Barnabas follows her into the drawing room [we get a quick glimpse of an overhead mic]. We’ve now done everything we could for Quentin, Elizabeth tells Angelique.

Maggie walks over to Quentin and kisses his forehead. Overcome, she turns away, not wanting him to see her in tears. Quentin starts to wake up, and Barnabas quietly speaks to him. Maggie turns back to Quentin--who suddenly shouts at her with what strength he can muster, No! No! No, she must not stay in this house! Get her out of this house! Get her out, get her out of here! Maggie keeps moving toward him and says quietly, Quentin, I... Quentin, I have come to stay....
