Current Talk '06 I / Re: Parallel Time
« on: June 03, 2006, 07:08:47 PM »
Collinwood is bright and cheery isn't it?

I guess Liz had a happy marriage and is probably a widow, so there is no gloom hanging over the house in that aspect.  Roger never married, thus no Laura to deal with.

Quentin and Angelique apparently were happy most of the time.

When the show returned to Real Time, they should have changed the sets somewhat and had a story to be told in regular time, at least for a year or more.  The last three stories were already told in three different time periods.  Too much time travel did hurt the show I believe.

Perhaps Aunt Katherine was Nora's daughter, though she was probably the sister of Liz and Roger's mother.

Richard Garner became one of the never seen but occasionally mentioned after 1967.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: Thoughts on 1840

You are forgetting that Barnabas had a body in 1970 under the trance of the I Ching.  Perhaps Angelique had to bring that body to 1840 and return the 1840 body back to the chained coffin.  Then the Barnabas who was cured was in his 1970 body.

That's one way to rationalize how he could be remembered in the present time as it happened "off camera".

I also think she did something similiar in 1897 "off camera".

Has anyone ever come up with fanfiction that goes in the direction the writers intended for 1967 with Burke and Dr. Woodard eventually discovering the truth about Barnabas and staking him?

I have lived in NY my whole life, first The Bronx and then Queens.  There was a lot of crime back in the 70's and 80's and places like Times Square back then weren't  places youwent alone, especially at night, it was a far cry from the Disney like athmosphere today..  You couldn't take the IRT subway after 10pm, especially to the Bronx.  I was in college in the mid 80's and didn't have a car, which meant I couldnt go anywhere in Manhattan at all for the nightlife.

I remember a situation in Chelsea in the late 80's where a couples phone did not work and the husband went outside to use the pay phone and was shot and killed.  That was the type of threats faced by New Yorkers.

Jane Wyman on Falcon Crest gave that show the same dignified and refinement as Joan did on DS and she was another true professional as Joan was.  I think the parallells of the two are very great.

I read in the The Bennetts  that Joan was good freinds of Mary Cooper, who played older Josette in PT 1841 long before MC came to DS.

If DS was on for like 15 years or more or even to the present, it most likely would not resemble anything at all like it was originally.

Can you imagine that there would be recasts of beloved characters over the years as other soaps have gone through? (4 Roger's, 3  Liz's, 6  Carolyn's, 11 David's, 9 Amy's, etc)  How many more illegitimate  brothers or sisters would Roger or Liz aquire?  Or sons and daughters, ex-lovers, unknown ex-wives, etc for other characters.  They would have two or more new families in town with no supernatural connections.  The supernatural theme would have faded over time and the show becomes more generic soap opera like.  It most likely would never have been syndicated at all as it was still on the air and the early shows would have been largely forgotten and never seen perhaps till the internet came around and then the first five years as a whole would probably never be broadcast or for sale.  The two movies would still be around though of course.  Not likely a 1991 or 2004 remake.

Louis Edmunds may have been off the show to do a play at the time.  Roger was also gone for most of Quentin's haunting as well.  The RT Roger Collins seems to have run its course by the summer of 1970 unfortunately.

Don Knotts played wheelchair bound Wilbur Peabody, whicgh was his only dramatic role I think.  His sister Rose Peabody took care of him as was played by three actresses in a relatively short time.

I have said before that once Vicky and Peter walk off in the sunset in the Return to 1796, that should have been the last of RD on Dark Shadows.

Three different actors should have been cast to play Ned Stuart, Dirk Wilkins, & Charles Delaware Tate.

I read on one of my DS Yahoogroups that he passed away this morning at 6:15am.  It's sad as his wife died about two weeks ago.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: Least favorite DS writer
« on: March 22, 2006, 10:50:11 PM »
Too bad Francis Swann was gone before Barnabas arrived.   Malcolm Marmorstein wrote a lot of good episodes in the early Barnabas period.

Dan Curtis should have just let his writers do the writer and himself doing the producing part.  The earlier episodes appear to have more writer input whil later ones obvioulsy have DC's imprint on them regarding pacing.

PT 1841 had a good structure, almost like regular soap style as the first year was.  Probably because DC was not as involevd as he used to be.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: The Levithins Are The Best Time Period!!!
« on: March 17, 2006, 11:31:10 PM »
Leviathan was to be six months long?  That explains the first 6 weeks of almost nothing happening.  I always wonder if there is an outline to these later stories somewhere (1897, Leviathan, 1840) that explains the original intent of the writers like Shadows on the Wall was for the first year of DS.

They should have had Paul Stoddard return in a traditional soap opera story as they did with Jason McGuire.  Having him involved with the Leviathans was a mistake and we missed out on a lot of good drama with Paul, Liz, and Carolyn.  BTW... they should have used Paul's ghost even though Dennis Patrick was unavailable by having him be off camera and Jeb reacting to him.
The fact that they changed the origin of the Leviathans more then halfway through was a really bad mistake and where they start to "throw everything but the kitchen sink in".  One episode Oberon was the leader and then the next one Nicholas Blair was the leader as if he always was.
