Maybe we should just have a list of Julia-isms.  I swear, she's probably the character with the most personality traits:  her flickering, heavily-lashed eyes, the ever-present cigarette and smoker's cough, her catchy little phrases, her patent scream, her vast array of sedatives, her trusty black medical bag, her emphatic way of speaking, etc.

Let's not forget her handbags and gloves. Wow, what stylish woman she was. :)

and back to the main topic:

A-line dresses
Blue taper candles (no matter what the time period)
Explaining the zodiac charm bracelet to Daniel and Sarah, including calling one of the signs a "devil."  Honestly, some people just don't know how to behave when transported to another time ;)

This was my first DS website and I have a great deal of affection for it for that reason and because of the wealth of information and springboard it was to other DS sites.  However, it appears to not have been updated in quite a long time and I wonder if anyone here might know who runs/ran it and/or what the site's owner creator might have in store for it, if anything.

Many thanks for any information!

Thanks, Doug for Collinwiki.  I would love to contribute.  I had toyed with the idea of doing something similar some time ago (not wiki style but my own creation) but the enormity of the task put me off.  If I have suggestions of addtional things to keep track of (appearance of supernatural creatures, or incidents and use of magic and witchcraft) how best would it be to offer these suggestions?

I am probably about as big a Doctor Who fan as there ever was and earlier this year that show made an astonishing comeback, bulldozing the competition in the ratings and capturing the hearts of casual as well as fan viewers.  So hope springs eternal in my heart that the same will one day happen for Dark Shadows.

Can you imagine, Barn and Julia in the Spam sketch?

I should have mentioned that before Morticia on the Addams Family, Vampira (actress Maila Nurmi) in the 1950s created a look that was very ahead of its time and may have contributed to the look devised for Morticia.  Unfortunately I have read that NO video footage of Vampira's act exists, but there are plenty of photographs.

I think Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons may have predated and/or inspired Vampira's look, but I am not sure.  Also, if one is looking for some footage of Vampira, IIRC she appeared in Plan 9 from Outer Space. :)

PS  In need of a makeover -- Jeff Clark.  A gag in his mouth, a bag over his head, and his hands tied behind his back.

Interesting idea, cousin, though that might have a caused a rather big change in the audience demographic ;) ;D

(though again, in FFC's Dracula Mina is a reincarnation of Dracula's wife Elizabetha, though there are some strong similarities the the DS story as well.)

OT, but as long as we're talking about Dracula...

The Elizabetha I'm assuming you're talking about is referring to the real life Countess Elizabeth Bathory, who was a descendant of the legendary Vlad Tepes, later known as Vlad Dracul, later known as Count Dracula. Elizabeth was convinced that if she bathed in the blood of virgin women, she would remain young and immortal.

I am familiar with the Countess Bathory story, but was not aware that she was distantly related to Vlad Tepes.  However, the Elizabetha I was referring to was the character that was Dracula's wife when he was alive.  In the film, Dracul left her to go to war and one of his enemies smuggled a letter to her falsely saying that he had been killed.  So distraught was Elizabetha by the news of her husband's death she threw herself off the highest parapet of their castle home.  The wife was played by Winona Ryder, who also played Mina Harker and in that film it was made pretty plain that Mina was a reincarnation of Dracul's wife.  Since KLS played both Maggie and Josette and Josette also (but for different reasons) plunged to her death and in the "contemporary" story, Dracula is trying to reconnect with his Lost Love (tm) is why I suggested that FCC prettly baldly swiped elements of the Barn/Maggie/Josette story from DS for his version of Dracula.

Yes, the Barnabas-Josette storyline does bear a powerful resemblance to The Mummy.  I suspect that Dan Curtis must have been inspired by it. The only slight difference is that Helen really was the reincarnation of Im-ho-tep's lost love, whereas Maggie was not really Josette.

Ah, well. I guess I had always thought that Maggie was a reincarnation of Josette, but I realize that I was probably reading more into it that was there, seeing the resemblance to the storylines.  :)  Or perhaps it was HODS that suggested that Maggie was a reincarnation.  I have an impression that it was at least hinted at some point, but again, it may be that it was only Barnabas who thought this. :)

Didn't DC work that storyline element into his version of Dracula with Jack Palance?  It's been so many years since I have seen it, I don't remember.

I do, however, very strongly remember the first time I say Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, and thinking what an obvious swipe from the Dark Shadows Barn/Josette story the Dracula/Mina story was!!  ;D (though again, in FFC's Dracula Mina is a reincarnation of Dracula's wife Elizabetha, though there are some strong similarities the the DS story as well.)

After all, Karloff as Turhan Bey was pretty spry and agile.

Make that Ardeth Bey..... ;)....(it's one of my all time favorite films.)

OOPS.  I stand corrected (no matter how it's spelled!  :) )  I wonder where I got "Turhan" from??

Anyhoo, interesting that there are so many rabid fans of Karloff's The Mummy!   ;D  So, I guess you do see what I mean vis a vis the similarities between the Im-ho-tep/Anckesen-Amon and Barnabas/Josette love stories.

I cannot verify any of the abandoned storylines, but that possible mummy storyline could have been interesting.  If DC had gone the route of Karloff's The Mummy, it could have worked. After all, Karloff as Turhan Bey was pretty spry and agile.

(Pointless aside:  I have always thought DC cribbed the Barnabas/Josette story directly from the 1933 version of The Mummy.  You have a supernatural creature awakening in a modern time, meeting a woman that resembles his Lost Love (tm) from long ago, believes she is the reincarnation of said Lost Love and sets about trying to restore the previous incarnation's memories in the mind of the modern woman.)

So, I guess the outfit she wore a couple of times at home during the early Dream Curse episodes, the one with the floor length quilted skirt (or just very long Kulat-style pants) was one of her creations too?

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Carolyn's Job
« on: January 27, 2005, 07:20:05 PM »
I have not seen the entire series, but as the child of one of the richest families in New England, I don't think she had a job nor was she encouraged to get one.  I don't think she ever went to college either.

But your suggestion had me chuckling at the thought of Carolyn (if she were a modern rich teen) doing the Paris Hilton thing, traveling he country in her own reality show!!  ;D
