Everybody seems to be suffering from a severe case of Victoria-itis - i.e., cluelessness - in this episode.

First, Barnabas and Julia leave the highly volatile Adam alone with the highly unreliable Willie. Is anybody really surprised that that doesn't go well?

Then, Julia practically has to have a house fall on her before she can figure out what's bothering Mrs. Johnson, even though Julia would clearly have been focused rather intently on whether or not Mrs. J had had that confounded dream the night before.

Finally, the already hyper-terrified Mrs. J walks towards the strange "monster" in the garden rather than hightailing it out of there lickety-split (is that redundant?).

I get that characters often have to act in idiotic ways to advance a plot, but there seemed to be more than the usual quantity of that in this episode.

The scene featuring Cassandra and Mrs. Johnson really did begin to feel a bit like The Battle of the Wigs.

I don't quite get why Cassandra couldn't have just made David forget everything he saw in the gazebo right from the start rather than robbing him of his ability to communicate. Another bit of pointless theatricality by Cassandra.

In episodes like this one, it's hard to remember that Mrs. Johnson - with her concern for David - was originally installed in Collinwood to spy on the Collins family for the by-now all-but-forgotten Burke Devlin.

That's a really good point, dom. The show probably would have quickly folded and then faded into oblivion had Barnabas and Julia not taken center stage (Barnabas, certainly). In addition, I think the fact that the actors were afforded different types of characters to portray in various time periods and dimensions may have kept some of their resentment at bay.

Plus, a steady paycheck never hurts either.

The path between Collinwood and the late Dr. Lang's house is becoming pretty worn by this point. In a steady stream they come - first, Mrs. Johnson, followed quickly by Vicki, then Liz.

It's at this point that I begin to feel a little sorry for the actors who were there at the launch of the series - before it became The Barnabas and Julia Show. Perpetually in the dark about what exactly was going on - while the newbies took over the main storytelling duties - the original characters were essentially relegated to secondary figures in their own story.

It reminds me a little of "Lost in Space," where Will and Dr. Smith became more and more prominent while the rest of the Robinson family receded into the background. I wonder if there was any resentment on the part of the actors about this turn of events (I know there was, in the case of LIS).

MT-

It's almost like operation-through-WiFi, no need for connections of any kind.

DS, ahead of its time, as always.  [ghost_wink]

Is this the only instance where someone (in this case, Jeff) is actually gleeful (rather than regretful) to pass the dream on to the next person?

I do find it interesting that, even though Barnabas has no real "power" over Willie anymore, he still bosses him around, even though he himself is now mortal and Willie's holding a loaded rifle. Old habits die hard, I guess.

Only in Collinsport, Roland, only in Collinsport.

LOL yea. With that constant parade of ghosts, vampires, phoenixes, werewolves, witches, etc. to deal with, a mere kidnapper/murderer would seem to be the least of their worries!  [ghost_wink]

I appreciated all the underplaying (especially in the scene with Barn, Julia and Willie at the hospital), especially after all the over-the-top histrionics of the recent batch of episodes (how nice to have a bit of a respite from Dr. Lang).

It does seem strange that Barnabas and Julia would just bring Willie home like that. Isn't the only reason he was never put on trial for attempted murder because he was determined to be insane? Would he just be allowed to rejoin society, no questions asked from the authorities?

For all the times when Roger Davis can be screechy and over-the-top, there ARE times when he can be effective. I think he's really good in the late night scene with Maggie - just two pleasant, likable people having a quiet, thoughtful conversation. It's a nice off-the-cuff moment, a bit of an oasis amid all the surrounding chaos.

I do wonder if Jeff thought he might have jumped straight from the fire into the frying pan, going from a mental institution to the home of a total stranger who likely sounds more unhinged than the people he interacted with there.

Yeah, but there's always something kinda awesome about watching Grayson Hall chew the scenery -- she's such a smart actress that you KNOW it was an intentional choice.  She knew she could go big, and baby, that's just what she did!

Honestly, after the past few episodes, I'm surprised there was any scenery left for her or anyone else to chew. The acting has been off-the-charts lately - and not in a good way.

On the other hand, no actress ever did more with a pair of gloves than Grayson. Julia at her best.

I think there is a general consensus here that the scene in Dr. Lang's lab is one of the most clunky in the history of the series: shrill overacting, ludicrous dialogue, missed cues, clumsy staging (that tiny scalpel being wielded as some sort of threatening weapon makes me laugh every time I see it, just as it did in the previous episode when it was intended as the device to saw Jeff's head - or at least face - off from the rest of his body). A classic of sorts, I guess.

I was wondering that too. Can't imagine it was an entirely original idea. That would be very un-Dark Shadowy.  [ghost_wink]

I think it's that dream room and the "terrors" behind the doors that puts people off, plus the unecessarily circuitous way she has of getting to Barnabas.

I agree that this is yet another example of DS's ambitions outstripping its technical abilities to realize them. As to the circuitousness, I always just chalked it up to Angelique's flair for the theatrical combined with her innate sadism.

Apparently, I'm in the minority on this one, but I rather like the Dream Curse story line.

It's true that it does become repetitive over time, but I like the cleverness of the idea - that one can only find mental and emotional relief by telling the dream to someone else, knowing full well that, by doing so, one will be inflicting the exact same torment on the next person. It provides for some genuine mental anguish on the part of many of the characters as they fight for as long as they can to deny themselves the inevitable need for sleep in a vain effort to protect the poor person next in line who is doomed to suffer at their hands.

Jenny Lind. aka the "Swedish Nightingale," was one of the greatest singers of the 19th century. She was discovered as a young girl while singing to her cat (<3) and went on to become an international sensation with multiple tours sponsored by (of all people) P. T. Barnum. You can find out more about her here.

I believe she was a featured character in an episode of "Here Come the Brides" in the late '60s.
