I think Beth was all three of those things. Servants weren't treated as human beings and aren't even now, I suspect. At first, Barn treated even DOCTOR Julia Hoffman as an inferior.

A sad end for the faithful Beth.

I guess it should be no surprise to anyone that Tate has Quentin's portrait--which is starting to look a little the worse for wear as its subject remains the epitome of manly beauty. (I know, I know!  [snow_cheesy])

The bullying Aristede turns out to be just another coward. (MS does well here.) It's also funny to see this fastidious-to-a-fault character covered in dirt and with his clothes messed up from being on the run.

Fun to see Quentin's grim enjoyment as his death-pranking plan suddenly takes shape.

Eager to get back into "Petofi"'s good graces, Aristede hurries back to Charles's studio and peers in through the window. When the count is alone, Aristede steals into the house. He raises the knife to stab “Quentin” in the back, but the count turns around the next moment in surprise. However, Aristede has no scruples about looking his victims in the eye. Before the count can utter a word--or raise his Hand--Aristede plunges the Dancing Lady into his chest. The count topples to the floor.........

[According to my notes, Terry Crawford recalls that she fell onto a rubber mattress and bounced up from it, but although it would have made a wonderful blooper, it did not happen on screen.]

Was Thayer even Petofi's first body?

*shiver*  What an awful--and entirely plausible thought!

Wonderful performance by Terry Crawford.

Once again Tim thinks he'll get something from Petofi for betraying Beth. I don't remember if he does--let's hope he doesn't.

Petofi's former magic TV cabinet is now just an ordinary cabinet full of books and papers.

Quentin--the real Quentin--succeeds in re-switching bodies, but too late for Beth. Another hard lesson for Quentin, I'm afraid.

As usual, Barn is a very bad winner and gleefully points out how useless Selbtofi's Hand is now.

Selbtofi drags Pansity off and says he "possessed" Charity with the spirit of Pansy--whatever that means. But he fails at un-possessing her and storms out, without locking or even closing the door. Charity tries to figure it all out. He seemed so different--again, she murmurs, just before Beth returns. Where is Quentin going? What’s wrong with him? Beth asks. He’s in the wrong body, C/P replies. How could you allow yourself to be so fooled? Not even know your own man? I don’t believe you, Beth insists, perhaps thinking of the last time he took her away, right out from under “Petofi”‘s nose, and bedded her. Doesn’t he seem different to you? C/P asks. He is simply upset, Beth insists haughtily. This only proves my point, C/P answers. Count Petofi gets upset when he don’t get his own way; the real Quentin would just go off and have another brandy! With an incredulous smile, Beth asks, Do you honestly believe that the man who just left here is Count Petofi?  Remember, I have second sight, C/P reminds her. You’d better believe me! I don’t, Beth insists, but she’s frowning now. There’s a little temptation to, ain’t there? C/P asks, seeing Beth’s doubt. No, Beth insists, none. He’s done some strange things recently, but that’s the only reason I’d even consider it. Do you want to find out, once and for all? C/P asks her. There’s a way, and it just came to me. Do you want to try it before you go on being fooled any longer? Tell me, Beth says wearily. C/P smiles, confident that her idea will work.

Selbtofi is back at the old mill, flexing the apparently powerless hand and wondering (in Petofi’s voice), Where is Quentin? Why hasn’t he come? Has the power gone to _his_ hand? Why has it simply disappeared. Beth descends the stairs and joins him, explaining, Charity said I’d find you here. I have good news, she tells him. You have no reason to fear Count Petofi anymore--because the gypsies are about to catch up with him again. Who told you? he asks, unable to repress his terror in his surprise. She doesn’t answer at first, then turns to watch his reaction as she tells him, The gypsies returned to Collinwood a few minutes ago. Almost in a panic, Selbtofi says, That means they’ll be coming here! Someone has probably told them about this place! I must get out of here! Why bother? Beth asks with studied casualness. You’re not afraid, are you? Of course not! he snaps. I just doesn’t want to be here when they’re around. I see, Beth says, turning away as she realizes that C/P told her the truth. Look at me, he orders her suddenly. Reluctantly, she turns to face him. Has anything happened that makes you feel differently toward me? he asks suddenly. No, she assures him. She forces herself to smile, then to step into his embrace. Nothing has changed, she insists. I still love you very much. Steeling herself, she places her hands on his chest and leans in when he kisses her on the cheek. He hugs her and tells her, You’re a good girl. I’ll see you back at Collinwood. Yes, at Collinwood, she repeats mechanically. He races off. Alone, she stands in the middle of the room, filled with revulsion and terror. Now she knows that Pansity was right. She gasps, My god, it’s true! He _is_ Petofi!......

All very good points, MT! When I first saw this part of the story, I thought the whole reincarnation plot line was at least somewhat romantic, but now it seems like just a retread of the Maggie-kidnapping affair, only creepier.

Regarding Petofi's Hand, I guess he still had enough power without it when he was living with the Soamses and when he first came to Collinwood that he could reveal the truth about everyone. Or else it's just a bigger than usual writer goof.

Joeytrom, you're absolutely right about Time after Time! I remember that scene too.

In fact, I've seen several TV shows and movies where a character finds a stash of old Bell Telephone stock certificates, cashes them out, and rakes in millions.

I suppose Angelique and/or Julia explained the new circumstances at Collinwood while they were dosing Barnabas. And I suppose that after all those years of vampirism, Barn's top priority is his own survival, regardless of how he hurts others, up to and including his "dear friend" Julia.

Honestly, I hadn't thought of it this way before, but I'm afraid you're both right.  [snow_rolleyes]

We begin to see a couple of major switches in this ep, yay!

Meanwhile, Beth brings Selbtofi back from the future. He realizes they have to find the painting or bust. Somehow just being with Selbtofi makes Beth very mean to Pansity. But Pansity holds her own and gets away from him, ha ha ha!

Barnabas is awfully pushy with his Josette-reincarnation stuff, isn't he?

Pansity has a very nice, blurry-around-the-edges dream sequence in which she waltzes in Quentin's arms while he sings (yes, sings!) a bit of her song. But it's not so nice Quentin turns into Petofi.

Desperate to find the portrait, Selbtofi needles Barnabas about how nice it is to live in the sunlight and waves the Hand around menacingly as he threatens to force Barn to reveal where the painting is--even though Barnabas doesn't know.

Kitty comes to the old mill and asks QThayer to use the hand to help her. When I think of the things I saw you do in England-- Do you remember the game we played one evening? You would raise your Hand, and whoever it touched had to tell the truth. I saw my husband, Gerald, say things I had never known. [But Petofi did not have his hand then--he spent a hundred years seeking it.] I have to know the truth about myself, she says urgently. That is all I’m asking. What will it cost you? Nothing. But I’ll even give you the last of my jewelry. QPetofi, who has avoided looking at her, sadly shakes his head. I won’t leave until you help me, Kitty insists.

PQuentin tells Barnabas, Your time is up. I don’t know where the painting is, Barnabas insists. What a silly man you are, PQuentin comments. Surely you can’t be without fear. You know too much about life--or you should, since you’ve lived for so long. You must know the prices men are sometimes forced to pay. He raises the Hand and wonders, What will it be? Death? No, he decides, that’s much too simple. You should become what you were. Yes, that is far more interesting. He laughs, relishing the thought: You shall become the bat again--hiding from the day; unable to speak; screaming at the darkness. He raises the Hand. Do you feel yourself beginning to change, Barnabas? he asks tauntingly. You should--because it’s going to happen very soon. Your arms will begin to feel heavy, he promises. Then your body will be filled with excruciating pain. You will become what you were, that loathsome bird of the night--now! Barnabas makes no move to get away as PQuentin puts the Hand on the side of his head.

But nothing happens, and after a moment Barnabas turns to smile at PQuentin. Your power--what has happened to your power, Count Petofi? he asks mildly. PQuentin examines the suddenly useless Hand in consternation.

Meanwhile, QPetofi has apparently decided. He touches his own cheek with the Hand as he says, Let this woman see the truth. Let her see who she really is. Do not spare her. Let her see. He touches Kitty’s cheek. She reacts instantly and turns away in shock. No, no, he was right, she murmurs as Josette’s theme starts up. Barnabas was right--I am Josette duPres. I remember everything now. I am Josette duPres--but I am also Kitty Soames! Meanwhile, QPetofi stares down at the Hand, smiling in utter amazement.....

Speaking of trying to think all this through, it's interesting that Petofi thought that we'd be using the same dollar bills in 1969 as in 1897. The bills in Beth's suitcase would have aroused the suspicions of even the dullest cashier.

Interesting conversation between Pansity and Barnabas when he tells her, I know I look like the vampire you destroyed, but you must believe that I was a victim of the vampire--just as your fiancé was. [He means poor Carl, and it's doubly true.]

Don't forget 1969 Quentin's necktie, wide enought for a six-lane highway.

Love all those wonderful entrances, especially Barn's. Not the last grand entrance he'll make either. I was actually very touched when Barn and Angelique tell ThayerQ that they'll fight Petofi together. You are no longer alone, Barnabas assures him. This is part of my plan, he continues. I contacted Angelique, and now you. We will fight Petofi together, even if the situation is worse than I thought. We couldn’t tell you the whole plan until now, Angelique adds, but now we will tell you everything. Barnabas begins by saying, When Julia Hoffman arrived from the present (i.e., 1969), I knew I could be cured of vampirism, move more freely and fight Petofi.
Although: It is difficult to share his optimism, since Julia was never able to cure Barnabas in the present, even with modern medicine and equipment. But then again, he did make her speed up the treatments, thereby causing them to fail.

I haven't been to Maine but I've been in the general area. The action of the water carves out a lot of sea caves, so Barnabas would have had his pick and no doubt found a nice, comfy one. After all, no one could know Collinwood better than he does! Angelique's big doppelganger reveal has always been fun. I'll bet the fans loved it at the time.

Quentin actually has come a long way. He tries to help the wildly gesticulating Charles, but Charles pokes himself in the eye and refuses to believe that ThayerQ actually is Quentin--until it's too late.

According to my notes, this episode first aired on October 28, 1969.

According to DS Wiki, KLS does the voiceover for this episode.

I think Angelique and Julia's plan for Barnabas was pretty nearly complete. Julia was pulled back to 1968 before she was able to give Barn the final dose of her concoction, and Angelique couldn't either because she was Petofi's prisoner. Maybe that's why Barn was so weak when he finally reappeared.

Very VERY cool that Louise Jameson plays a Pansity relative in the audios.

I love the growing relationship between Judith and Pansity, perhaps the most unlikely duo in the whole series. It was a big reason for my hypothesis about what happened to everyone after the 1897 story line ended--on screen, that is.

I guess that whether he's a vampire or an ordinary mortal, Barnabas loves Josette--after all, he did meet her before Angelique cursed him.

I've always loved the two-Barnabi stunt. I've never heard of another show that even attempted such a thing.

This is actually a fun part of the story. I think Julia was pulled back to 1968 before Kitty arrived, and Angelique is too busy with Quentin to notice the return of Josette.

Pansity insists that the man in the guest room at Collinwood is NOT Barnabas Collins, the vampire. As if further proof were needed, we get a nice shot of Selbtofi and Barnabas in the mirror.

Edward assures Judith that the coffin and the body in it were both destroyed by fire. This reassures Judith enough to have Edward invite Barnabas to dinner.

We now get our first glimpse of Judith's long game as she and Pansity confer about the portrait of Amanda. The mystery is solved when we learn that Judith commissioned Pansity to buy the painting from Charles and provided the cash. As Judith surveys the portrait with satisfaction, C/P gleefully tells her, Mr. Trask saw the picture a short while ago. He was awfully mad! I wish you could have seen it. I imagine he’ll be talking to me about it soon enough, Judith remarks. What will you tell him, Miss Judith? C/P asks (although she should properly address Mrs. Trask--but maybe Judith told her not to). The truth, Judith answers. Then why did you send me to buy the picture? C/P asks. I felt he was more likely to give it to you, Judith replies. Oh! Ain’t you the crafty one! C/P says admiringly. Judith explains, All my life, people have been underestimating me--my family, my lawyers, now my husband--but all of that is going to change very soon. While I was away, I began to see the truth about certain things--like why I was sent to the Rushmore Sanitarium. She pauses to glare at the portrait. Why were you? C/P asks. We’ll discuss that some other time, Judith replies. Thank you for getting the portrait. Oh, it was worth it just to see Trask’s face, C/P giggles. What was she like? Judith asks as she walks closer to the painting. Sort of fetching, like her picture, C/P replies. He went around telling everyone he was trying to save her soul. I’m sure it was her _soul_ he was interested in, Judith says dryly. I’m sure that he must have spent hours trying to find it. They were a bit chummy, C/P agrees. What a quaint way of putting it, Judith remarks. What are you planning to do with the picture? C/P asks. I’m thinking of hanging it in the master bedroom. You mean with you and Mr. Trask? C/P asks in surprise, telling us no end of things (or not--maybe Trask gets a lot of headaches or has a couch in his study). Why not? Judith answers. Mr. Trask has always taken pride in the souls he has saved. I think it is only fitting that the portrait of his latest achievement should hang on our wall. Can you see what a devoted wife I am? I see what a smart one you are, that's what I see, C/P answers. I get to like you more and more every day.

Kitty returns to Collinwood, very bewildered at what's happening to her, as well she should be. Judith has Pansity escort her to her room.

Selbtofi returns to Barnabas's room and finds him sleeping. Apparently Selbtofi's purpose in going there is so that the sleeping Barnabas won't hear him say to himself, here is only one way of finding out the truth. This hand is something you cannot resist. When I place it on your forehead, you will wake and tell me what I want to know. He stretches his cursed Hand toward Barnabas’s head--

But he's interrupted by Edward, who wants to know what he's doing there. Just checking on the guest, Selbtofi replies. That's more or less actually true. He keeps his back turned to hide his consternation, which only increases when Edward says, When I spoke to him earlier, I hoped he could come down and have dinner with us. He’s been invited to dinner? Selbtofi asks irritably. Yes, Edward replies, Judith wants to meet him and to ask him some questions. Well, let's hope that she doesn't accept his answers as readily as you did, Selbtofi observes sourly as he leaves in disgust.

Pansity offers Kitty some broth, just like her (P.'s) mother used to make, but Kitty refuses. She feels that someone is trying to reach her. Pansity suggests just letting it happen, but Kitty is afraid. Edward arrives and sends Pansity out. Kitty confesses she's had another "attack" and thinks she should leave. Edward begs her to stay as he kneels beside her. What earthly reason do you have for wanting me to remain? she asks, bewildered. A very good reason, he replies. I believe there is a solution for you, one we’ve never discussed before. I believe the trauma of being widowed so young, of losing someone as devoted to you as Gerald was, can only be replaced by the love of someone else. Perhaps it’s wrong of me, being Gerald’s closest friend, to say this, but I’ve loved you from the moment you came to Collinwood. Please stay and marry me. Always a stickler for propriety even when he’s hoping to marry money, he adds, I had intended to prose after a proper period of mourning. If by so doing now, I’ve offended you, I’m sorry. Not only am I not offended, Kitty says with a particularly fortune-hunting smile, I’ll marry you! They indulge in a stiff embrace and exchange a kiss utterly without passion.

Downstairs, Judith presides over tea as she and Selbtofi hear the end of Barnabas's story. Judith looks almost ill at what she’s heard. Barnabas concludes, After the ordeal was over, I barely knew myself anymore. When I wandered into the doctor’s office, I was in a state of shock. It must have been terrifying, Judith says sympathetically. I don’t know how you survived it! I apologize for the effect my arrival had on all of you, Barnabas says as PQuentin looks at him skeptically. Judith says, I admit the family has had more than its share of suffering in the past few months. We’ve learned to be wary of all strangers. That’s perfectly understandable, Barnabas agrees. PQuentin walks over to the fireplace behind Judith and asks, What about your life in England? You’ve told us almost nothing about that. There’s not much to tell, Barnabas replies, looking somewhat uncomfortable. After my father died, I saw no reason to stay in England, so I decided to come to America to start a new life. Why here? Selbtofi asks. Because it’s where the family’s roots have always been, Barnabas replies. I felt when someone is left alone in the world, he should go naturally to where the family was. Suddenly he stands up in sheer astonishment as Kitty enters the room, with Edward following her. Both are beaming. Edward performs the introductions the wrong way around, introducing Lady Katherine Soames to Barnabas first. Barnabas recovers enough to take her hand and say, The pleasure is all mine. Edward invites Kitty to sit and stands beside her. Have you spent much time in London? Selbtofi asks. Only on business, Barnabas replies. I wondered, because Lady Hampshire is from there, Selbtofi says. Did you know Lady Hampshire or her husband, the late earl, in London? I never had that pleasure, Barnabas replies. What was your business? Selbtofi wants to know. Judith saves the day by declaring, Cousin Barnabas has answered enough questions--and dinner is ready anyway. Barnabas offers Judith his arm, Edward takes Kitty’s, and all leave except PQuentin. Arms folded, he remains glaring, doubting, wondering for a moment before he follows them into the foyer and to the invisible, never-seen dining room.

At 9:30, everyone returns to the drawing room, where Edward pours out Champagne and announces that he and Kitty are engaged to be married! Barnabas is utterly shocked. No one notices at first. Edward, you’re full of surprises, Selbtofi comments with a smile. Judith congratulates the happy pair. Selbtofi drinks to them, but Barnabas doesn’t join in the toast. When will the happy day be? Judith asks. Overjoyed, Kitty replies, We haven’t had time to think about that yet. We’ve only decided tonight. Edward surprised me too! Selbtofi comments, You’re curiously silent, Barnabas. Barnabas apologizes. Standing up, he congratulates Kitty and Edward. I know you will both be very happy, he says formally. He takes a sip of Champagne, then says, I’m still feeling weak--I should retire. We understand, Edward says. Thank you for the delicious dinner, Barnabas tells Judith. (Apparently he was able to eat it!) I hope you’ll feel better tomorrow, she replies. Barnabas wishes everyone a good night and then leaves, thereby giving them the opportunity to talk about him. What do you think of our new cousin, Edward asks Judith. He seems quite open and charming, Judith opines, and his story quite plausible. He can stay until he is fully recovered. Turning to Edward and Kitty with a smile, she says, Now, tell me about your plans.

At 11:58 p.m., Barnabas is in his room, but not asleep. Sitting in a chair, he looks quite unhappy. Hands extended, he speaks aloud: Wherever you are, Josette, you must hear me. I am not wrong about you. You are Josette--my Josette. This marriage cannot take place. It must not take place! Know yourself, my darling. Be who you are destined to be.

Kitty is in her room, lying on her bed. Her thoughts run thus: Wherever you are, please leave me alone! I want to leave this room and come to you, but I don't know why. It frightens me. I must not give in to you. I must stay here, and yet.... She gets up and takes the music box from the mantel. She opens it, and Josette’s theme plays loudly. As she listens, she falls under the spell of the music and smiles.

For a moment we have a split-screen shot of Barnabas and Kitty facing each other in profile. Barnabas continues, I cannot go away. There is too much for me to do here. But I cannot stay in this house and watch her marry someone else. When it happened that way before, it brought only tragedy and death. Have I come back to tragedy and death again? Oh, Josette, Josette, he cries out inwardly, will  it be over before it has even begun? He turns around and sees Kitty standing in the doorway, smiling. I heard your call, she says as she steps into the room. I have come. As they draw near each other, she tells him, I am your Josette. I shall be--always. Barnabas gazes deep into her eyes, and they embrace and kiss passionately.....

You're right about Aristede. Cold iron is supposed to be the most effective way to destroy a witch.
