Current Talk '06 II / Re: What are the chances of a new Dark Shadows?
« on: September 08, 2006, 08:41:55 PM »
The difference between a new concept and a re-make of a pre-existing work is like the difference between a new born baby and Frankenstein's Monster. Especially when the baby was is particularly beautiful and delightful.

DS is a victim of its own success. If the original show had been a short-lived, barely acknowledged series with few fans, it would actually be easier to create a new version with new people and new ideas. But it's been kept alive for 40 years and the first fans are still devoted to the original the way it was. How does a new creative team get around that? How do they choose between what was, and what could be?

Why would anyone try it at all?

Well put, Rainey! Although I never watched DS when it originally aired, I prefer it over any newer versions, and that particular set of actors who played and defined how we view their characters, is something that can be captured only once, IMHO.

That's not to say a new DS wouldn't be successful, but it still wouldn't have that charm and ambiance of the original.

As for me, I don't want the characters to be reinvented. I like them the way they are.  :)

I've never read either of the Lara Parker books because they haven't been published in braille. The first one has been made available in an Ebook form, but I don't have the necessary software yet. Maybe soon I'll be able to, then I can form a proper opinion.  ;D

It's got to be Mr. Frid, hands down. Without Jonathan Frid, the show would have gone to the dogs. Mr. Frid was and still is a great theatrical speaker. I think we should get on our hands and knees and hail Jonathan Frid.

My sentiments exactly!

Without Jonathan Frid's wonderful and excellent portrayal of Barnabas, the show would have been canceled, and would have been known as just another soap with a few gothic undertones.

Just my opinion though.

How many CDs are there in each story? Is it a single CD? Just curious...

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Joe!

It was very interesting. It was funny how you realized when the 1897 episode got mixed up, but the producer told you to show it anyway. I bet you just loved being able to watch DS on the job!  ;D

Current Talk '06 II / Re: Help! i'm trapped in this coffin!
« on: September 05, 2006, 04:18:18 PM »
remember how
shocked Barnabas is in 1840 when he's released from his coffin, can't remember now who lets him out, and told it's 1840?  This of course is BEFORE he I-Ching's his 20th Century mind back to his 1840 body.  I just recall him saying something like, "My God!  I've been here over 40 years!" or something like that.
That's right. so that suggests he was unaware of the passing of time.

As for myself, I prefer to have him awake, experiencing every dark moment of those two hundred years. It explains his behavior once he's released from his coffin in 1967.

Also, it makes for better ideas for the imagination.  ;D

RainingWolf, if you like what someone has written in their post, you may "curse" them. If you don't particularly care for something they said, you may "cure" them.

The numbers show how many "curses" and "cures" a person has received.

I hope I got that all correct. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this helped!  :)

First of all I would just like to thank everyone for posting such wonderful stories of the fest. For those of us unable to attend, they're great and very much appreciated!  :)

Now as for Jonathan Frid being so willing to answer questions, next year if they no in advance of his call, they should provide an entire day for questions and answers! LOL!  8) ;D

I agree, no one can replace Jonathan as Barnabas!!! Jerry Lacey is a good actor, but he has too distinguished a voice as Trask to do Barnabas.

My thoughts exactly! Every time I hear Jerry Lacey, I automatically think of Trask. The same could be said for any other DS actor who tried to portray a different character on the show.
