I don't get why Barnabas just leaves Joe when the latter goes to Maggie's. Barnabas clearly knows that Joe is under the influence of a vampire and he is desperate to find out who that person might be. So why not at least keep Joe close at hand in the hopes that the vampire will reveal him (or, in this case, her) self? Color me puzzled.  [santa_huh]

This is a period of ironic role reversals.

We have Angelique as a vampire, Barnabas a potential vampire victim, Julia in need of a doctor, and Elizabeth, the mistress of Collinwood, being pushed around and having her fate decided by others. This is like a therapy session in empathy, giving everybody a chance to see how the other half lives.

Great, goofy and wonderful episode.

I love the scene between Elizabeth and Julia in the drawing room - the doctor has become as crazy as the patient!

I also love Julia throwing Elizabeth off her own property. This episode really conveys a sense of the topsy-turvy world that is Collinwood.

I wonder if Nicholas paid for those drinks he "conjured up." If not, I imagine the bartender can't be any too happy with a patron who undercuts his profits by creating drinks out of thin air.

Is Tom the only victim of a vampire who isn't compelled to hide his "master"'s secret from the general populace? For here he is blabbing to Joe about what he's seen and experienced at the hands (or should I say fangs?) of Angelique. And how clueless are the people of Collinsport not to recognize Tom's wounds and condition as similar to what occurred just a year or so back? Even Maggie doesn't make the connection. As with their belief in ghosts, it seems like the good citizens of Collinwood are born anew each day, completely oblivious as to what has happened in the past.

Vickie would have been real stiff after spending all that time in the closet.

I get kindof tired of Vickie always being the damsel in distress.

I think Alexandra Moltke got tired of it too!

That's some hiding place Carolyn found for Adam. He's had more unexpected visitors than the castaways on "Gilligan's Island"!

The never ending night continues with a nice fade in from Barnabas to Adam.  Stokes digs up Barnabas without becoming drenched in sweat as one would expect from a grossly overweight sedentary old gentleman. Carolyn decides to hide Adam in the West wing of the great house at Collinwood. Can't wait to see it again.

I've often wondered why Adam didn't bump into Quentin and Gerard while he was staying there.  [easter_wink]

I have to admit to being a tad disappointed by the first scene in this episode. I was hoping that this would turn out to be one of those dream-within-a-dream moments when a person THINKS he's awakened from a dream only to discover that he is still dreaming. I think it would have been better if Barnabas had awakened in his chair after the bat bit him, only to find Julia still sitting in her seat watching over him and his neck dripping with blood. I thought they were going in that direction with the rather "unreal" sound of the knock on the door. Plus, why do the whole dream curse at all if Angelique is only going to send a bat out to re-curse Barnabas anyway - which she could have done without the curse?

A missed opportunity in my book.  [devil2]

It's kind of amazing how long they've been around - far longer than DS probably.  [ghost_wink]

I wasn't aware of religious fundamentalists taking devils and witches on TV seriously until the "Moral Majority" came along at the end of the 70s.   It seemed laughable.

I don't know if you remember something called Chick Tracts. They were crudely drawn little booklets with messages designed to convince mostly young people to become Christians. I remember the cover of one had a cartoon image of a flying witch (obviously derived from "Bewitched") and the text referenced that show as an example of how Satan was using pop culture as a means of winning a new generation over to his side. So, while there may not have been widespread concern over this issue, it certainly did exist in some quarters at the time.

This episode is notable for its many highly dramatic confrontation scenes - the most probably in any single episode. The best is watching Professor Stokes trying to slink away into the shadows out of sight of Cassandra, realizing the impossibility of it, then throwing caution to the wind and confronting his arch-enemy head-on.

Then we have that great scene between Liz and Cassandra. No one plays the affronted grand dame better than Joan Bennett.

One thing did make me a little sad, though, in the scene in the Evans cottage. It shows how much some of the original cast members have, by this point, become little more than extras in somebody else's story. Joe and Maggie both look a bit foolish and superfluous in this episode. They were always made to appear so clueless and in-the-dark about what was really happening in Collinsport.

Oh Joe, it hasn't been THAT long since you were dating Carolyn - to slip up and call her Carolyn Collins instead of Carolyn Stoddard. That may be a bit of a glimpse into just why things didn't work out for the ill-matched and ill-fated couple. I also wonder if he ever slips up and calls out Carolyn's name in his more passionate moments (if there ever are any) with his current squeeze Maggie.

Funny that nobody seemed to notice that the portrait of Josette resembled Maggie (possibly because it doesn't) until Barnabas came along. I always felt that the writers expected the audience to suspend its disbelief too much in this regard.

Also, I wonder how Stokes knows how the 18th Century Barnabas "acted." Or is that just a comment on the modern Barnabas' old-fashioned, gentlemanly ways?

The newly formed Adam, apparently, has more sophisticated taste in music than I have, since I confess to having the "A Man and a Woman" theme song (original soundtrack version) on my ipod.

At what point, I wonder, did the Collinsport police department grow weary of that never-ending stream of emergency calls from the great house of Collinwood? Did they eventually start rolling their eyes, declaring in tones of exasperation, "Not again!" or "So, what is it this time?" every time they got another call to help straighten something out up there?

I've been noticing how often Barnabas, Julia and Willie turn their backs on Adam. In fact, their whole behavior towards Adam is self-defeating and erratic. And, really, nothing but a skimpy little bowl of soup for a growing boy like Adam? And why feed him something that requires the use of a spoon at this early stage in the game? It seems a bit unnecessary to be instructing him in table manners at this point. I keep imagining scenes from "My Fair Lady," with Barnabas as Henry Higgins, teaching Adam to drink tea with a lifted pinky, walk around with a book on his head, and recite catchy little ditties about weather phenomena in Collinsport.

David has certainly gotten over his fear of Barnabas, even though the mystery of the coffin in the basement was never really resolved to his - or our - satisfaction.

Gotta give that Roger credit. Generally so urbane and stuffy, he really kicks into bad-ass action-hero mode when the situation calls for it!
