Well, another icon from our youth has passed into Infinity...Jonathan Harris, who won the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere with his portrayal of "Dr. Smith" on "Lost in Space" died today. I'll have more details soon.

Harris was a character actor from TV's golden age, having appeared on such genre shows as "The Twilight Zone," "Bewitched," and "Land of the Giants." But it was his towering (and hilarious) role as saboteur/coward Zachary Smith that earned him true immortality.  Rest well, Jonathan.  There'll never be another one like you!

I understand. But what does "IM" mean? I can "IM" her? Huh? Does that mean private e-mail? Forgive my ignorance!

Thanks for the explanation, Midnite...but if this issue was resolved "off board," why the existence of this thread? Shouldn't that have been taken "off board," as well...since most people, including myself, didn't have a clue as to what it referred to?

Now, this is ONLY an impartial observation, and I don't want anyone to take my comments personally, because they're certainly not meant that way.

Apparently, VAM (whom I do not know) "jokingly" (her term, not mine) jabbed at "XXXX" (whom I also don't know). The remark was deemed unacceptable by Midnite but left to stand (if I'm wrong about this, please don't hesitate to correct me).

What followed next was this thread--an "apology and goodbye" from VAM. Speaking objectively, I knew such a posting would solicit across the board sympathy and a slew of messages asking VAM to rethink her decision. And I knew (am I psychic, or what?) that it would all end the way it has: with VAM posting, thanking her supporters and (apparently) deciding to stay, after all.

In the meantime, "XXXX" is suddenly cast in a different light...by implication, he/she is almost the villain in this piece. Hmmm...is something wrong here? Who tossed out the first volley: VAM or XXXX?

If there's a conflict between these two people, it should definitely be taken off board. And that also means "apologies." I seriously doubt anyone here (aside from XXXX) was insulted by VAM's comment--so why the apology to the board?  What's the point? I have my own opinion, but I'm afraid if I express it, I'll be riding out of here tarred and feathered.

Come on, kids...let's not have such thin skins, ok?

I think that "hotel" movie was called "The 13th Floor," and James Brolin was a kind of ghost who liked to wield an axe every now and again.

Thayer David was in several films, including "Rocky." I don't think any of you would want to see that one during a DS Chain Reaction!

Did "Grave Secrets" also star Patty Duke? If so, that was on during the Halloween season. Not sure when, though. Typical "spooky" TV movie.

If I was gonna have a DS Chain Reaction, I'd definitely include:

(1) Secret Behind the Door--thriller starring Joan Bennett and Michael Redgrave

(2) Suspiria--shocking horror film, also starring Joan Bennett!  Watch this one with the lights on, even if it's edited!

I enjoyed your theories, Dr. Lang...they're intriguing! But I must wonder--did Barnabas really "remind" Julia of Dr. Woodard's death? I recall him fumbling for the right words, finally blurting "Julia...Julia, remember someone!"

Wasn't that same piece of "furniture" in Hell's lobby when Quentin and Amanda were dealing with Mr. Best?

Lovely tribute...and, as an aside, the accompanying photo is the one my members received when they joined The Dennis Patrick Fan Club (in 1969-70). It was autographed, too. The very same photo appears in Part I of "Return to Collinwood: Collecting Dark Shadows," the article I did for Autograph Collector magazine.

I accept the idea that a "parallel time" stream was created by Vickie going back to 1795--and that would certainly explain why she apparently had no memory of Sarah Collins or Burke Devlin upon her return (for that matter, nobody else remembered them, either!). But I must disagree about 1967 time "freezing," since the writers made it perfectly clear, on several occasions, that time was "standing still" at Collinwood during the seance. In fact, they even show all the particulars sitting around the table, allegedly "frozen" (though we can see them breathing). So, if time did indeed "freeze" in 1967, and Victoria returned within a breath of when she disappeared, it would stand to reason that time should continue as it had been...but now incorporating whatever changes Vicky's foray into the past caused. One of these changes is the sudden reapparance of Peter Bradford/Jeff Clark, followed by Cassandra/Angelique. But there's no way Sarah Collins, Burke, and Julia's red diary should be alterered or change in any way. And what about poor dead Dave Woodard? He's another convenient memory that nobody remembers!

I think the REAL point behind 1795 was to show the origin of Barnabas, which the writers did very well.  But when Vicky returned to 1967 (now 1968 ), a NEW writer had come on board...someone who took Dark Shadows down many a wacky, inexplicable road. Continuity went out the window, and plots began to be "cribbed" from other sources. His name: Sam Hall.

The episode about the library was called "Matakitas is Coming,"starred Vera Miles, and was originally broadcast November 28, 1968.  Very frightening!

Well, I know this one, cause the show was one of my favorites! It's called "Journey to the Unknown" and was originally broadcast on prime-time ABC during the 1968-69 season. The first episode was entitled "Eve," about a mannequin that comes to life (played by Carol Lynley). This particular episode inspired an early Carpenters song, also entitled "Eve."

"Journey to the Unknown's" opening credits were in an abandoned amusement park (at night). The viewer ended up on a roller coaster, as an eerie theme song (sans vocals) played.

Incidentally, "Journey to the Unknown" was produced by Hammer Films, out of the UK. They're famous for "Horror of Dracula" and "Curse of Frankenstein," both starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Ah...my old brain has been put to some good use!

Current Talk '02 II / Return to Collinwood in Autograph Collector!
« on: October 28, 2002, 07:44:41 PM »
Just a "heads up" about my Dark Shadows article in AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR magazine! It will officially hit the stands on November 12th! I just received an advance copy, and they did a gorgeous layout--and this is only Part One! The article is profusely illustrated with letters and autographed photos from Jonathan Frid, Joan Bennett; Kathryn Leigh Scott, Louis Edmonds, Dennis Patrick, Humbert Allen Astredo, Marie Wallace, Diana Millay, and Jerry Lacy! Pamela Anderson is on the cover, and it's the December 2002 issue.

AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR can be found at every bookstore, from Barnes and Noble to Borders and beyond.

Part Two of "Return to Collinwood" features my story as an "old" fan club president and includes comments from Dee Kearney (Louis Edmonds fan club) and Robert Finocchio (Diana Millay fan club). The article was written in cooperation with Jim Pierson, of Dan Curtis Productions.  I've also written a tribute to the late Dennis Patrick, which will appear in Part Two.

Thanks!

Rod
