OT -- BTW, did anyone else see the superbly done Victorian drama "Daniel Deronda" Sun & Monday nights?  :)

I taped it and started watching it tonight.  I've seen almost half of the first episode.  So far it seems all right, but I think it's too soon for me to decide if I like it or not.

Current Talk '03 I / Story Problems
« on: April 02, 2003, 09:31:48 AM »
This first one doesn't bother me too much, given all of the suspension of disbelief needed in these stories, I find this quite acceptable.  However, the I Ching presumably isn't meant as a means of time travel.  When Barnabas used it, he thought he would be contacting Quentin's spirit.  He didn't know he would travel in time.

Even if the hexagram of change does mean a change of time, it wouldn't necessarily mean the same time.  Yet Barnabas and Julia both go back to 1897.  Since they went "back" in time, why does Petofi assume he'll go forward?  And why necessarily to 1969?  Yet both Charles in his attempt and then Petofi do, indeed, go to 1969.

-----

The more problematic one is Petofi's hand.  I think they forgot what they wrote about it.  The entire beginning of that story was "our" people's possession of the hand, Petofi's search for it, and then finally getting it reattached.  He went 100 years without it, and if he didn't get it back at that point would have died (presumably).

Now, I'm sure he still had formidable powers without it, but why are Kitty and Charles so afraid when he holds out the hand and asks if they remember what it can do.  They could never have known the Hand.

Current Talk '03 I / Re:The incredible doppelganger
« on: April 01, 2003, 09:20:24 AM »
There was a foreshadowing of this plot.  Quite a while ago, I think it was when Laura was threatening Angelique, she made a doppelganger of herself, was apparently destroyed, but really wasn't.  I couldn't say anything then, but it's fun to have this ability demonstrated and then later put to such a wonderful use!!

However, what I can't figure out, is that she apparently had to capture his image in the mirror to create the doppelganger.  As a vampire, he wouldn't have been able to cast an image in the first place, so. . . .

Corel Word Perfect has a linux version.  It's a great word processing, spread sheet, etc. package.  I've used this program for years to make my life as Microsoft free as possible.   Also, MS Word does not have the nifty feature, Reveal Codes.  A must have IMHO.   But I don't think they have a version for the Mac.  Oh well you can't have it all.

I don't know much about Macs or Linux, but I know at some point WordPerfect had Mac versions and I think they still do.  I've also heard of them in connection with Linux, but I'm not sure if there's a full operating version for it or not.

I quite agree about Reveal Codes.  Aside from not being able to figure Word out, I'm at a total loss in it without Reveal Codes and can't imagine how anyone manages.

My mother is currently in a nursing home.  A couple of days ago they changed her room and she has a roommate named Annie Harris.  I was visiting on Saturday afternoon and her daughters were there.  Apparently there was some mail delivered to her by mistake, as I heard one of them say "Amanda Harris"!!  Well, I certainly perked up at that!

I couldn't decide whether to say anything or not, but finally asked if they ever watched DS and they said a long time ago.  So, I mentioned that there's a character named Amanda Harris!!

It's amazing how much one forgets.  I was laughing out loud during a lot of today's episodes.  Charity/Pansy's scene with Trask, especially the bit about the portrait was a riot.  And that was followed immediately by the look on his face when he saw Barnabas!  These were really good episodes.

Thank you - I definitely would have forgotten about it if you hadn't done this. :)

I love this part - Edward's conversation with Trask is a riot and then Trask's face when he sees Judith.

And, I just love that Judith is back.  By that I'm not referring to her physical presence, but the REAL Judith is back.  She's acting just as she did when she learned that the inheritance was hers.

That's wonderful news Annie and Carol!!  Keep up the good work!!! :)

I love Gerard's Adam and Eve idea - that would really be funny.

Since the victim in the case says that he should be judged on the artistic merit and she sees no reason why he shouldn't win for his work, regardless of what he did, so I find it acceptable, but there's still a strange feeling about honoring someone like that.

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / No more Mozilla?
« on: March 25, 2003, 09:11:48 AM »
For a week or two now, I have been able to come here with Mozilla and haven't had to bother bringing up IE just for this.  What a pleasure (a couple of little details I've been meaning to ask about, though).

A little while ago I got in and was reading Robservations (in Mozilla).  When I then tried to access anything else, I got an error message that it's no longer working with Mozilla.  That was really weird, since I was using it at that moment!

Anyhow, here I am, back with IE.  I hope this is temporary.

Current Talk '03 I / Re:Count Petofi and The Future
« on: March 24, 2003, 08:00:49 AM »
But, since Barn prevented Quentin's death in 1897, why would Quentin (in body OR spirit) be also in 1969? Why wouldn't he just 'stay put'?

The spirit of Quentin would no longer be haunting Collinwood, but Petofi had Tate draw the "magical" portrait, which keeps Quentin immortal, so presumably he will still be alive in 1969.  Petofi at one point implies that he planned that, but it was before he knew anything about the future, so surely that wasn't his original intention.
