Can't think of any cogent reasoning as to why (too tired), but I guess I just disagree about Rachel.  IMHO she's an interesting character who wasn't that well written, but wasn't the self involved hussy depicted in this thread.

Thanks for the information, Gothick!  Wish I could've seen Donnie boy in the play, it sounds really cool & groundbreaking.

Current Talk '02 II / Re: Magda and Jenny--uhh when?
« on: November 22, 2002, 09:27:10 PM »
I was noticing this too - right now Magda and Quentin almost seem to be friends.

SPOILER...

It's my belief that they didn't decide to make Quentin a werewolf or Jenny the sister of Magda until the last minute, like: "Oh wait, as long as we've got a gypsy, why don't we have her be Crazy Jenny's sister and curse Quentin into being a werewolf!"

One of the reasons that I LOVE 1897 is that it seems like they were making it up as they went along.

Isn't it kind of a double standard to say that Rachel's a loosey-goosey for going to meet Barnabas in the middle of the night, or for accepting his gift when he's in it as well?  And it's not exactly like the music box he gave her was a negligee or a pearl necklace.

To be honest, none of the 1897 characters are what I would call nice people, or of high morals.  IMHO, Rachel isn't as nasty or backstabbing as most of the Collins family. Of course, that's what keeps the show interesting! ;)

Wow.  Guess I'm the only one who feels sorry for Rachel.  While she doesn't always make the best choices, and does stick her nose in where it doesn't belong, that isn't very different from Victoria Winters, who seems a revered character on this board.

I find it puzzling and a little troubling that this character engenders such a hostile attitude considering her background.  Rachel Drummond was a penniless orphan who nobody wanted around.  She was shunted off to Worthington Hall where she was mentally, spiritually and possibly physically raped at the hands of the Trasks, who are among the most despicable of DS characters.  Lately, she was betrayed by Tim Shaw, the only real friend she ever seems to have had.  And we all know what her fate will be.

Yet within this thread this character has been referred to as a sneaky twit, and a stupid bimbo, who will go for anyone in pants.  It's implied that she deserves whatever comeuppance she gets.  Now, I am no fan of the typical 'helpless female' character either, but isn't this a little harsh?

Maybe I'm being oversensitive.  Please know that I'm not trying to attack anyone's opinion...I'm just saying.

Thanks for sharing!  Those were swell pictures (both you and Ms. McKechnie look great) and the show sounds like it was a wonderful time!  I had no idea that she had been in so many prestige productions.  Wonder if she'll make it to the fest next year?

Although I'm liking Don Brisoce as Tim Shaw (and agree that the character is a jerk!), I pine for the days of shirtless Chris Jennings - yummy!

This was around the time when Don was doing DS by day, and appearing as Donald in Boys in the Band by night.  I've tried and failed to find a publicity photo of him in the role.  I would be obliged if anybody ever does put their hands on one if they could let me know.

Gothick, I've seen references to Don Briscoe appearing in this play a couple of other places on the web.  I know generally what it's about but have never seen the play (or the movie).  What can you tell us about the character Briscoe played?

I can never decide whose voice I think is sexier.  When Quentin's on screen, it's him.  When Tim Shaw's onscreen, it's him.  Guess I'm just fickle!  :)

did a taste of freedom render them both terminally stupid?

No, but the writers certainly did! (laughing)

Oh no, it's almost the last installment of your book.  What will we do when it's over?   Such an enjoyable read!  Am gripped by suspense at the thought of what chapter 19 will bring.

BTW, the "...he'll rip your lungs out, Jim!" bit had me LOLROTF.  Literally.

So Cassandra, let me get this straight. You've been killed, but you're posting on the message board. Isn't this every bit as odd as Quentin being taken aback by a formerly dead person?

Not to role play here, Mark (don't want to get in trouble with our benevolent moderators), but you know you can't keep a 'good' witch down!

Thanks for sharing this story with us Mark!  It really is one of the best Dark Shadows stories I've ever read.  Love how your descriptions of the surrounding and of how the characters are feeling really evoke the tone and atmosphere of the original series.

And the characterization of Petofi is spot on! He is the villain I most love to hate!

Great job, Yendor!  Really loved hearing a bit more about KLS, she sounds like a really interesting person who has a great outlook; there's so much more to her than Maggie Evans! It's strange that she writes and edits so many books about television, yet doesn't get to see so much of the work the books are based on. From the sound of it, she must be too busy! ;)

Can't wait for the interview with Marie Wallace!  :)
