Lots of good wishes to you, Anne!  A lot of the cholesterol-lowering drugs can affect the liver, so perhaps this is just a precaution to make sure all is well.  I certainly hope the results are good! :)

OT - BTW, since you're one of the original posters from the old SciFi BBs, I thought I'd let you know that I received an email today from another SF poster that I don't think any of us had heard from in ages.  Do you remember Ashenrider/PadreJim? :D

I've thought several times of posting a list of as many names as I could think of who posted frequently at SciFi but who seem to have disappeared.  I wonder if they're here with different names and thought they might speak up and let us know if I posted their "old" names.  Ashenrider disappeared a long time ago, but every once in a while he'd resurface.  How is he?

What always gets me about his cousin from England story is that he is the son or descendant of the "original" Barnabas who went to England, so presumably was brought up and spent all or most of his life there.  He's just arrived.  Usually, at least one person is suspicious of him - in this case, Desmond.  But no one ever questions the lack of an English accent!!

Or, at least if he had met Roxanne first, and then decided to say goodbye to the portrait, that would have made some sense.

As to the lack of connection between the 1970 "replay" of the 1840 story and the actual events we see when they go back, it's not just the lack of attention to the children.  We were led to believe that there was the ship Java Queen, Gerard was presumably the captain, and at least one time Daphne visited him there.  In 1840 all of that is simply forgotten.
Re Cassandra's question about Roxanne's destruction, I believe it was Barnabas who told her brother about her and what he had to do.  So, this would be a new thing that happened after they went back in time.  So, the first time she wasn't destroyed, and now she is.
However, I've always been bothered about how she originally became a vampire, seeing that Barnabas wasn't released from the coffin that time.  The children also mentioned remembering attacks like that when they found the body in the woods.  So, we have to guess that another vampire was on the scene originally.  But, then where is it now?!!

Patti, I would assume that if you deleted your cookies that it included the ones for here, so when you came back it was like the "first time."  Now that you're logged in again, you shouldn't have that problem any more.

Assuming you're using Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options.  On the General tab, in the middle is a section called Temporary Internet Files.  One of those choices is "Delete Files" and when you click that you get a box where you can check if you want to delete all offline content and when you click OK on that, it should delete the cache.

I had just downloaded Pop Up Stopper the day before these were posted, but hadn't installed it yet.  Meanwhile, tonight I found a site that has samples of pop-ups that one can use to test pop-up blocking.

It was his plan to use the staircase.  By the time he got free of the zombies, it disappeared.  He called out, "Julia, the staircase is gone" or something like that.

Current Talk '03 II / Related Topic - Ghostly Sounds
« on: September 17, 2003, 07:47:59 AM »
How many times have we heard (especially in recent weeks) someone say that they feel a presence in the room?  Well, on Dark Shadow, we figure they're right!  However, in real life . . .

If You Sense a Ghost, It Could Be This

The police headquarters in Shelbyville, Kentucky is a spooky place--and not just for criminals. Doors rattle in the dead of the night when no one is around. Stairwells creak at all hours. In broad daylight desk drawers open on their own. One city worker reported feeling something grab her leg when she was taking a tour of the building late one night. All of which has prompted the Shelbyville police to call in the experts--ghostbusters.

Instead, they should check out new research from the National Physical Laboratory in England where scientists think spooky occurrences like this aren't the work of ghosts, but rather the result of a very low frequency sound that is inaudible to humans.

It's called infrasound. And it's an extreme bass.

Elephants use infrasound to communicate over long distances or as weapons to repel foes. We human beings may not be able to hear it, but we can feel it. Generated by natural phenomena, such as storms, seasonal winds, weather patterns, and some types of earthquakes, infrasound can produce a range of bizarre effects in people including anxiety, extreme sorrow, and chills.

The study: Richard Lord, an acoustic scientist at the National Physical Laboratory in England, and Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire in southern England, produced infrasound using a pipe that measured 7.5 yards long. They tested it on 750 people who were attending a concert in London. The audience heard four contemporary pieces of live music. Some of these were laced with infrasound. Afterwards, audience members were asked to describe their reactions to the music.

The results: The audience did not know which pieces included infrasound and were not able to consciously detect the infrasound, but fully 22 percent reported unusual experiences when it was present in the music. These included feelings of unease or sorrow, chills down the spine, or nervous feelings of revulsion or fear.

"Some scientists have suggested that this level of sound may be present at some allegedly haunted sites and so cause people to have odd sensations that they attribute to a ghost," Wiseman told Reuters. "Our findings support these ideas."

The research results were presented to the British Association science conference

The description of the program from our paper's guide:

Fang vs. Fiction: The Real Underworld of Vampires and Werewolves

Otherwordly creatures are popular sources of movie chill, but some have prompted serious scientific studies [i.e., Julia?!!].  This new special takes a factual approach to the legends of the likes of Count Dracula, with comments from sociologists and people who claim to be real vampires and werewolves.

It's on Wednesday night, Sept. 17 on AMC at 10:00 p.m. Eastern

Current Talk '03 II / Setting up the "New" Vampire
« on: September 16, 2003, 07:52:55 AM »
When one knows who the vampire is, it's fun to see how the whole story is presented.  First they show Barnabas with Maggie, with Julia presumably catching him just in time.  All the more reason for Julia to assume he was the attacker when it first happened.

Meanwhile, Sebastian goes out for his date with Maggie, with Roxanne not seeming too happy that he's going out and apparently following him.  That night Maggie goes out again and comes back, having been attacked.

By the time of the revelation, first timers may have forgotten how all of that transpired, but it makes it more fun to see the background for it when one is aware.
