It's now November along the rocky, windswept coast of Maine. Granted, there might be an Indian Summer day or two left, but it's pretty much already wintery. Yet, we still see the denizens of Collinwood and even Collinsport go outside with only the leanest of coats, if any at all. And during the summer, there were those times when they were bundled up against an Arctic blast.

It reminds me of a woman who once prowled the streets of my home town. She was known as "Crazy Annie". She would use only public telephones because she believed that the government was bugging her, and once donated her Bible to the public library because she was convinced that space aliens, in cooperation with the government, were using it to spy on her. But the one thing Crazy Annie always did was to wear layer upon layer of winter clothing during the hottest days of summer, and in winter, when temps would drop even below 0, she would walk around town as if she lived on Fiji, loud blouses with palm trees, shorts and straw hats with plastic daisies stuck in the rim. Don't forget the sunglasses.

I'm waiting to see somebody like Liz or Mrs. Johnson start walking around the hallowed grounds of Collinwood dressed like that, now that the cold winds of the north are blowing.

And I imagine she watched her share of episodes of "Secret Storm" and the game-show "Concentration"; afternoons were spent with "Art Linkletter's House Party" (by 1967, it came on opposite a certain soap opera that was rather offbeat, but I don't think Liz watched it; she did once, and Roger stepped in, saying that the star looked an awful lot like her; Liz countered that the star looked more like Kitty Carlisle). Plus, every Saturday night, she would NEVER miss "The Lawrence Welk Show".

Well, whaddya expect from two people who spook around at two-thirty in the morning, one still in tie while donning a smoking jacket? Ah, the idles of the rich.

It's kinda like "On Golden Pond" meets "Dracula". I'm just trying to imagine Julia calling Barnabas an "old poop" (which would've been very appropriate during his temporary geriatric condition).

Jonathan Harris, aka the notorious Dr. (Colonel - a good trivia question; what was his rank?) Zachary Smith, was the one responsible for changing the character, basically to save his own skin from being released from the show. After all, it was a paycheck. His character was to be temporary, to cause "tension" amongst the characters (Robinson family) to flesh them out more. Once accomplished, he was to be offed. As it turns out, he received a rather good paycheck because he was not, nor ever, a member of the cast (that's why he was billed as "Special Guest Star"); he was paid more per episode than they. All guest stars were. Let's say they shot ten episodes per season, and the cast each received a hundred bucks for the whole shebang. However, a guest star got fifteen bucks for an episode. I guess we can figure out the math. He made his character, now changed from an evil murderer (kinda like Barnabas), to a bumbling, loveable troublemaker, popular among the kiddies and their parents who better appreciated a goofus than a homicidal maniac, and gave him power at the bargaining table. Here he was, a "Special Guest Star" for the entire series, technically never a member of the cast, and he got paid more than the stars (Lockhart and Williams). Don't think that didn't cause some real tension on the set.

I still cry my eyes out at the end of Old Yeller, Bob. But then, at the end of "Titanic", when everyone was weeping, I thought the old bag was nuts for holding onto that jewel for so long and not cashing it in. Go figure.
I think the 1795 scene in which Sarah dies is the most heart-wrenching in the entire series, and the one in which Joshua realizes that he has to lock up his son forever is right behind it.
I second that nomination.

I wonder, too, Birdie, when they decided to keep Barnabas as a more permanent character (note I said "more", because I also wonder when they decided to keep him just permanently; maybe there were still plans to off him once the whole constantly expanded story was over). It's always interesting to see how these things play out when ratings cause show-makers to take sudden and drastic turns. Dr. Smith on "Lost in Space" was to be on for only a few episodes and then offed, but look what happened there, too. Anyway, I also hafta clean, and tonight it's suppose to start raining, and by tomorrow it'll be a good winter snow storm (if there is such a thing as a "good" winter snow storm), so I'll be shoveling as well.

They bring the subject up in one of the books, Joeytrom. The reason why they didn't change the copyright date until late in '67 was because......they forgot!

Nevertheless, I'm thankful that writer Gordon Russell did NOT have Burke's plane crash in that lake bordering between Peru and Bolivia, the one and only Lake Ti*icaca. I mean, Belem was difficult enough to remember. Incidentally, this famous lake was a South American body of water that Sister Imelda neglected to cover in geography class way back in grade school. After all these years, I wonder why?

Really, Bob? Sister (or "Stir") Mary Jemma covered it in our class. But then, our good "stirs" weren't very worldly about things with double-meanings (even though we were, and any little thing would set us off in a fix of muted giggling). You can say she left the "ih" in Titicaca. You know, thinking about it, that body of water has a lot in its title to tickle the demented funny bone for us when we were kids. The first syllable had definite meaning, but then so did the last two taken together.
