That really is an obscure one for TV Guide.  I could see if they had a Barnabas question, but that's amazing!!

I quite agree with the complaints.  I've been so frustrated with them.  Our current newspaper TV book is pretty good.  I used to like to use TV Guide as well, as there was often additional information, but anymore it seems that what I'm looking for often isn't there and I have to rely on the newspaper one.  They only give general daytime listings.  We watch the tennis tournaments during the year, mostly on ESPN, but they don't go into detailed daily listings anymore and there's no way to determine things like that which aren't the same for the whole week.

And the nighttime listings, as you've mentioned, are ridiculous!!!!  I have a subscription right now, but unless there are major changes, I suspect I won't renew it.

i'm glad that 1897 is spoken so highly of...it's the next major story i have yet to watch.is it as good as 1795(which lately i've been thinking about alot)?

Obviously, everyone has their favorite and least favorite stories, so I can't speak for all.  1795 is very concise - there are a few side stories, but most of it hangs together very well, we get the explanation for what happened to Barnabas and get to meet Angelique.

1897 is very long and unwieldy.  There is the initial main story, but that branches off into a lot of secondary stories, and then still other things are brought in and most of these threads interact.  In that sense I don't find it as good as 1795, but I always marvel at how they managed to have so many disparate things happening and still manage to connect them and keep the main story going.  And, most of these are very good.  I think 1897 is a favorite of many.  I probably rank it second to 1795.

« on: November 18, 2004, 06:39:28 AM »
I don't know if any of you are familiarr with Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea Trilogy.  A friend gave it to me many years ago and I loved it.  This one is fantasy, but it led me to read a lot of her science fiction.

Anyway, SciFi Channel is doing a mini-series of it.  It will be in 2 parts - Dec. 13 and 14.  I think it just covers the first 2 books.  I never heard of the actor portraying Ged, Shawn Ashmore, but others in the case include Danny Glover as Ogion, Kristin Kreuk (Lana from "Smallville") as Tenar and Isabella Rossellini as Thar.  The other ones listed I haven't heard of:  Sebastian Roche, Jennifer Calvert, Chris Gauthier and Mark Hildreth.

By now I had such vague recollections of it that I've been re-reading it, so I thought I'd give advance notice in case anyone else would want to read it first.

I liked the beginning of Adam, too.  The whole way he managed with his bad treatment by Barnabas and Julia, and Willie, especially once the Professor was teaching him.  And his relationship with Carolyn and the scenes when she was hiding hm and how that progressed - all that was interesting and held promise for a good story.  Once Nicholas got involved, it really ruined it.  Especially once he had Eve, and all he could do was mope around and complain that she didn't love him, and then believe Nicholas again as he tried to convince him that all would still come out right.  I DID  enjoy Eve.

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Smileys

Judging from the fact that some creative smiileys have been appearing the last couple of days, I'm assuming that the additional ones have been restored.  However, I don't see any sign of them.  There used to be a place to click for "more smiliey" next to all the regular ones.  Or do some of you just have graphics of your own that you've been able to incorporate?
