Calendar Events / Announcements '05 II / "Our" Lara?
« on: July 04, 2005, 08:11:13 AM »
Every week the Monday New York Times has a column called "Metropolitan Diary."  People send in anecdotes about interesting, funny, strange, etc. things they've seen, overheard or experienced in New York.  Last Monday (June 27) had one and the signature was "Lara Parker."  I'm wondering if it is really the same Lara.

"Dear Diary:

My friends Cyndi Berzow and Nicki Spira heard an interesting cheer in celebration of Father's Day.

While they were overlooking the water on Fire Island, a man drove by the dock in one of the few small vehicles allowed on the island.  He chanted, ¢â‚¬ËœMake someone a father for Father's Day.'

Lara Parker"

An interesting addition - my aunt is blind in one eye and has macular degeneration in the other, so can hardly read anything.  I figured she wouldn't be able to see whole words, which this needs.  But, I tried printing it very large and gave it to her.  She got through a couple of lines and deciphered most of the words.  Of course, when I asked if she realized that they were misspelled, she didn't.  I guess the brain got enough letters for her to get the words without actually realizing that they were wrong.  I think that's even more amazing!

MB. since you read this somewhere else and didn't write it yourself, I assume I don't need permission to use it elsewhere, but thought I'd mention that I'm going to post it on my WordPerfect forum.

I keep hoping some channel I get will show it.  I think it would be very interesting to see, regardless of production values!  :)

Patti and Penny - thank you.  Now if it would have meant something in terms of developing a career or something, that would have been nice!!

PS...Josette darling...did you attend Vassar? (Can I have your autograph sweetheart?)

Patti, yes - but what's the connection with the autograph?  :)  I did know Meryl Streep a bit - she was in a couple of my classes.

How convenient that I save things!  Instead of just keeping the most current directory, I have old ones as well.

Lara is not listed in the 2004 or 1998 Vassar Alumnae/i Directories, but she was still in the 1992 version.  I couldn't remember her real name, so looked up the IMDB and found Mary Lamar Rickey.  There is a Mary L. Rickey (Mrs. Thomas M. Parker) for the class of 1959, which is the same class as Jane Fonda.

BTW, MB has provided links in the history area that coincide with each of the day's highlighted episodes and will take you directly to the Robservation.  I highly recommend using the links because finding those summaries at a later date will pose a bit of a challenge.

Thank you, Midnite, for the additional information.  Is that what that little box is at the top with a caption from each year?  I had been wondering about that!  Why will it be a challenge to find them later?

I was wondering about the caption on the one 1966 picture:  "Carolyn tells Vicki about her mother."

What is she telling her?  Is it just about her not leaving Collinwood for 18 years?  I thought she had already been told about that.

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Dr. Julia Hoffman: Tough Cookie or Doormat?
« on: July 02, 2005, 02:37:45 AM »
I agree with Julia99.  I never saw her as a doormat.  She would argue with Barnabas and try vigorously to convince him of her point of view, but he was almost always obstinate and she would give in.  As she states, Julia knew Barnabas would do it anyway, and in many cases it was a question of trying to protect someone esle.

Was our good doctor screaming at the body or what the body represented?  I always thought it was the latter.

That's interesting - that could explain it.  I don't know if it was so much being surprised at her reaction to a body than the various supernatural things she had already dealt with in addition to her medical experience, it really seemed strange when she became that frightened.

I always get a kick out of the howling dogs - I'll transcribe it as "Wooh - wooh - wooh - wa-hooooooo!"

No matter how tense the situation, I laugh every time I hear that!!!  ;D

That's wonderful!
