Current Talk '08 I / Why was Phyllis Wick tried for witchraft?
« on: March 03, 2008, 06:08:27 AM »
The writers do a good job showing why Vickie is accused of witchcraft - all her knowledge about the future, her strange clothing etc. - but why would the original Phyllis, who clearly did not have all that baggage, be so accused?  Is it merely because she showed up at the same time as Angelique started all her mischief and, therefore, she became the "logical" suspect?  Still, it seems like most of the evidence we see being used to condemn Vickie would not be applicable in Miss Wick's case.

Any thoughts?

Great, beautifully executed scene between Trask and Joshua and then Joshua and Nathan.  Tremendous acting from all concerned!

Roger Davis really seemed to be having trouble remembering his lines in this episode - much more than is usually the case with him.

Much of this storyline feels so anachronistic.  I mean were people - even of Trask's ilk - still pushing the line that thunder and lightning WEREN't the result of atmospheric conditions as late as 1795.  This is post Benjamin Franklin and his famous kite experiment after all.

Ask yourself this - is it not true that in 2008 people (including even someone running for President of the United States) discount Darwin in favor of Creationism (and hasn't said someone won several state primaries)? Puts 1795 in a whole different perspective, no?

I see your point (heck, my own brother is a young earth creationist, perish the thought), but it has always bothered me that they were holding a witchraft trial a good hundred years after the real witch trials had officially ended.  This storyline really would have worked better had it been set in 1695 rather than 1795.

The poor Collins family.  Here they build this huge mansion and it seems to grow less populated by the minute.

Great scene between Barnabas and Abigail - classic stuff.

David Henesy has a wonderful way with understatement.  I love his response to Trask's "Don't you think it's time we had a little talk?" query: a simple but devastating, "No."  There is so much innocent contempt and dismissal of Trask's self-importance contained in that single word.  DS at its best.

Why do all the gravediggers in Collinsport seem to bury their clients six inches below the surface sans a sealed coffin?  The bodies always seem to rise with so little trouble.

Did Peter really believe that wholly inadequate towel would somehow hide his shenanigans with the book?

Joel Crothers gave a marvelous performance in this episode.  Loved his scene with Joshua.

Short English major answer: Because legends lose their mystique if they are straightforward.  [snow_wink]

Good point.

Why would the legend say that the sound of shattering glass was heard rather than just saying a lantern was knocked over and broke into pieces?  Why be so enigmatic when the facts are so straightforward and simple?

One thing that puzzles me is this: When a person is strangled, doesn't he/she collapse and die right away? It seems implausible to me that Suki would stay alive just long enough to utter Barnabas' name to Nathan. [idontknow]

Yes, why would a person die AFTER the obstruction had been removed from the throat - especially when that person still had enough breath to utter a name?

Isn't Joshua even the teeniest bit curious as to why the candleabra in Barnabas' tomb is fully lit?  Maybe he figured the "robbers" lit it for better visibility.

i always think it's strange that viewers who come to the show during one of the time travel periods becomes familiar with those characters first and then have to be "introduced" to the present time characters who are in effect "new" to them even though those characters had been with the show first.

this must have been especially true of the 1897 period because it lasted so long and had also been the series most highly rated storyline...meaning lots and lots of viewers had never seen any of the present time episodes and had no idea who those characters were.

I started very early on in the series, I guess, so the present-day characters were always the anchor for me.  However, a few years back, I was telling a friend (roughly my age) that I was watching DS again.  I was shocked when she thought of the show in terms of Quentin and Count Petofi and others of that ilk and had no recollection whatsover of Elizabeth, Carolyn, Roger etc.  That really caught me by surprise.

I love how Barnabas keeps coming back to Josette to tell her he can't keep coming back to her.  Talk about your cognitive dissonance!

I expected more "evil" os something, at this point, to bring us full circle to where BC was when set free in 1967.   I guess we have to put his 1967 mindset down to having been entombed.

Maybe Barnabas seemed more evil in 1967 because the people there didn't mean anything to him.  They weren't really his "family" (although they all looked amazingly like them).  Funny how Vickie made a big deal about the similarities in appearance but Barnabas never mentioned or, apparently, even noticed them.

I just had a thought: David was stuck in the secret room for several days, and he didn't get sick. Sarah was only outside for a short time. I guess the curse caused her to get sick.  [sick2]

Well, when David was trapped in the secret room 1) at least he was indoors, 2) he was fully dressed, and 3) it was September. Sarah was outside at night in nightclothes in January.

That was January?  In Maine?  No snow on the ground and all the leaves on the trees?    With Dark Shadows, I always picture everything happening from May to September, then everybody hibernating in the big house through winter, only to continue on with their drama upon awakening once again in the spring.   [snow_wink]
