Current Talk '15 II / Re: Discuss - Ep #0950

I am a huge fan of JF's voiceovers, whether at the beginning of an episode or when he's reading a letter that Barnabas has written. He had a wonderfully resonant, magnetic speaking voice.

Quentin does a pretty good job of grilling Jeb, even he doesn't get anything out of him. Quentin in these eps. seems to be wide awake and interested in other people, not just himself.

Carolyn goes out to the foyer to phone the police. Left to themselves in the drawing room, Jeb and Quentin indulge in mutual threat display. I feel we’ve met before, Jeb says. I wonder where. Quentin replies, The only place we could have met is the only place I’ve never been--hell. That’s where your ideas seem to come from. Maybe I can pull off a few special ones for you, Jeb suggests. Quentin laughs. I’m sure you’ll try, he says. But let me tell you something, he adds, letting the smile drop from his face to expose a snarl. I have learned to take care of myself! For a long time, I imagine, Jeb agrees. Quentin’s big blue eyes widen slightly at the depth of Jeb’s knowledge, but he never takes those eyes off his enemy. You don’t believe the sad story of Philip Todd, do you? asks Jeb as he helps himself to a drink. Never! Quentin declares. With truly disgusting smugness, Jeb says, Why don’t you try to clear Philip. I’m going to, Quentin replies. You won’t make Philip change his confession, Jeb says. Do you want to make a bet on that, Mr. Hawkes? Quentin asks with a sarcastic smile.

Presumably Jeb knows nothing about Quentin's portrait or he would have destroyed it immediately. He seems to know that Quentin is more or less immortal but no more than that. Did OberHaza tell him?

Meanwhile, Carolyn tells the police they should get a psychiatrist to examine Philip. Since when is she an expert? But I guess the writers had to get her out of the drawing room so Jeb and Quentin could do their male chest-beating thing--and it is a fun scene. Barn arrives and, since he can't very well accuse Jeb in front of Carolyn, has to be content with opining that Philip is isn't capable of murder.

Once again, Carolyn leaves, this time to tell her mother about Philip, clearing the field for both Barnabas--who has given up any pretense of allegiance to the Leviathans--and Quentin to confront Jeb. The score is now Leviathans 2, Collinses 0.

Barnabas is more anxious than ever to get the box. He warns Quentin that he shouldn't have gotten involved, even though Julia asked him too. They realize their one chance will be when Jeb brings Carolyn back to Collinwood. (Funny how they assume that Jeb is a gentleman, just like themselves.)

In the upstairs room, Jeb tells his new pet, Your time has come, my friend--just as we knew it would. He takes the bat out of the cage. It squeaks fitfully, and he comments that it isn’t even afraid of him. Somehow he stuffs it into the Leviathan box (off camera). When he closes the box, we can hear the bat flapping around inside, struggling to escape, but it quiets down when Jeb picks up the box. We are alike, he tells the bat. We know who our enemies are. Then he hides the cage, puts the box back in the wardrobe and leaves the room. As he leans over the railing he thinks to himself with a smile, Barnabas Collins, the box is yours. Do with it whatever you wish.

Apparently Carolyn has been waiting downstairs while Jeb set his trap. He comes back down and claims to have given Megan a sedative. Carolyn grieves for her and especially for Philip, who loved the shop and all the antiques he had collected. This line of thought brings her to tears, and Jeb puts his hands on her shoulders. She turns in to his arms and keeps on crying. Jeb is extremely pleased at this result of his actions but is nonetheless at least somewhat upset that Carolyn is crying. I didn’t want to come and tell you, he says. Carolyn, please don’t cry. Honey, I hate to see you cry. She looks up at him and the next moment he’s kissing her passionately. Taking a handful of her her hair gently, he says, I don’t want you to be sad, then can’t resist asking, Do you like me at least a little? I don’t understand you sometimes, she answers. Oh, I like you, but [after a moment’s hesitation] you are so harsh with people sometimes--like Quentin. When I walked into the room this evening, I knew that you had been fighting--at least arguing. Well, honey, Jeb replies, I like Quentin Collins. I mean, there’s no reason for me not to, is there? he asks smugly. He just doesn’t like me, that’s all. This thought is more than enough motivation for him to kiss her again, this time hard and possessively.

Barnabas and Quentin leave Collinwood together on their mission to find and destroy the Leviathan box. The lobby of the Collins Port Inn affords a clear view of the antique shop, so they decide to wait there until Jeb and Carolyn leave. Quentin is sure there’s a trap. If there is, I will have to escape it, Barnabas says, we must destroy that box.

Jeb brings Carolyn back to Collinwood and asks if she’ll be able to sleep now. She says yes and asks him to call her as soon as he speaks to Megan. He pulls her in for a kiss. Running his fingers through the irresistible shining mass of her hair, he asks, Would you tell me if “people” talked about me? I don’t believe what they say, she answers, bringing on another kiss. Jeb leaves, and Carolyn goes into the drawing room to sit and think.

Quentin and Barnabas arrive at the shop. Barnabas tells Quentin to stay outside and keep Jeb from entering the shop, then unlocks the door and goes in.

Instead of thinking, however, Carolyn falls asleep and has her nightmare about Jeb all over again.

Barnabas emerges from the shop, box in hand. Quentin tells him that Jeb hasn’t returned, and Barnabas tells him to stay near the shop. Where are you going? Quentin asks. The only place I can destroy this, Barnabas answers. I’m coming too, Quentin says. Barnabas warns him, Once I’ve destroyed the box, I don’t know what might happen. Something might happen even to Jeb. Stay here and see, he tells Quentin. When I’m finished, I’ll go to the Old House. If Jeb returns and then leaves again, it will be because he knows the box is missing. He will start looking for me. He will know where to find me.

Barnabas returns to the Leviathan altar and sets the box on it. I first saw this box here, he murmurs, on the blackest day of my life. Whatever spirits are listening, he declares, I no longer need you! I will spend my days ridding the world of Leviathans! He raises his cane to smash the box, but his eyes widen in amazement and then horror as the lid opens by itself. The next moment a very tiny bat appears inside the box (which has a blue velvet lining), then grows larger and larger until it flies out of the box [with very visible wires] straight at Barnabas. He tries to pull it off him but fails. The bat lands on his chest and sinks its fangs into his neck as he screams in agony.......

Poor Carolyn is still in her bad-boy-lust mode, so I don't think she ever, even for a moment, suspects that Jeb murdered her father and three other people.

And once more, the writers play fast and loose, re-happening all of the un-happened events that didn't happen because Barnabas went back to 1897 and kept Quentin alive, althought not well.

Jeb is about to kill Philip in a very prosaic, non-Leviathan manner--with a candlestick--when Inspector Lawrence Guthrie arrives. Is Lawrence Guthrie related to the late Dr. Peter Guthrie (of Dartmouth College, MT)? Jeb grins smugly as Philip is forced to lie to the Iinspector, then warns Philip that Megan will regret it if Philip betrays him.

At Collinwood, Amy is busy drawing (in the drawing room) while Carolyn watches. Carolyn asks what, and we can see that it’s the Naga symbol. That’s a strange subject for a drawing, Carolyn observes. Megan and Philip have jewelry with that symbol, Amy remarks airily. It makes me feel uncomfortable, Carolyn observes. Quentin walks in (wearing a fab dark blue coat). Amy takes one look at the man who is the image of her tormentor, rushes over to Carolyn and clings to her in terror. Carolyn tries to reassure Amy, but she is terrified. What are you frightened of? Quentin asks gently. You look like Quentin’s ghost, Amy replies tremulously. This Quentin isn’t a ghost, Carolyn insists. Quentin asks to see Amy alone. Carolyn hesitates, so he says, I know it will be painful for her, but less painful than if she keeps believing I’m a ghost. Carolyn leaves. Gently Quentin touches Amy’s face. He tells his great-granddaughter, I know that once upon a time you were afraid of someone named Quentin Collins, but Amy, I am not that Quentin Collins--I swear it!

Jeb knows that Guthrie doesn't trust him, and he's right. From an unspecified phone booth in an unknown location, Inspector Guthrie calls his office and instructs them to check up on a young man named Jeb Hawkes.

Amy comes to the shop to see Jeb. She tells him that she’s afraid of Quentin and describes a dream she’s had. We watch it unfold: David is missing. Amy hears Quentin’s music coming from a strange room, which turns out to be Quentin’s room, once more festooned with cobwebs. She calls to David, but the door slams shut. As she stares into the full-length mirror, Quentin appears behind her, in full 1897 regalia. She tells him, Maggie and Barnabas are after you, looking for David. She looks up into his hostile glare and begs him, Please don’t punish me! Maggie saw the room in a dream--I didn’t tell her. Unlike the real Quentin’s ghost, the dream ghost actually speaks to Amy. You will not tell Maggie, he tells her stonily. You will not tell Julia. You will not tell anyone--especially Jeb. As Amy comes back to the present, she tells Jeb, Quentin’s ghost scared me. He knew about you before you were here. Quentin Collins is the same ghost that scared me before, and I’m still afraid of him. Jeb promises, I’ll take care of Quentin--as I take care of anyone in my way. He decides to take Amy back to Collinwood so he can see Carolyn. Amy says Carolyn is talking to Inspector Guthrie. This gives Jeb a moment’s pause, but he decides to go anyway.

Carolyn tells the inspector what she knows about her father’s death: How Julia found him outside the antique shop and took him to Professor Stokes’s house, where he was killed. She says, Jeb had nothing to do with my father’s death. He arrived after it happened. I can tell you don’t like Jeb. With a smile, he replies, I can tell that you do. The phone rings. Philip is in the shop and is holding a cloth over the receiver to disguise his voice from Carolyn as he asks for the inspector. I must talk to you, Philip (now sans cloth) tells Guthrie. Please come to the antique shop tonight at nine o’clock. And please don’t tell anyone that I called.

Guthrie arrives at the shop punctually at nine. Philip says, I want to tell you how Paul Stoddard was killed and who killed him. I want to show you the room upstairs and tell you the incredible, horrible story of what happened at the police station. They go upstairs, and Philip unlocks the door. Walk right on in, he tells Guthrie as he stays out in the hallway. Guthrie enters, finds the lamp, and turns it on. Suddenly he hears the sound of heavy breathing and turns to see the Leviathan. Open the door! he screams to Philip. With trembling hands, Philip slides the bolt home and turns the key. He listens in pain and horror as the breathing turns to snarls. The screaming continues a moment longer, then dies away. The heavy breathing sounds more like panting now, as of a great beast recovering from some exertion. After a moment, Philip hears utter silence, then slow human footsteps. He opens the door, and Jeb emerges. Don’t be so upset, he tells Philip, who is completely traumatized. You did your job well. Megan would be proud of you. Philip is almost in tears, but Jeb repeats, You did your job very well. Now let’s see if you can do the rest of it.

At 10:00 p.m., Carolyn is in the foyer, waiting for Jeb and thinking he has arrived when someone knocks at the door. She rushes to open it eagerly, but the visitor is Quentin. I’m looking for Barnabas, he says urgently. We both want to talk to you. I’m going out with Jeb, she protests. You can’t, Quentin replies, and you’ll find out why as soon as Barnabas arrives. Annoyed at all this fuss about her personal life, Carolyn warns Quentin, If you don’t tell me what’s going on, I’ll leave now and meet Jeb in town. Quentin decides he must proceed on his own and after a few deep breaths announces, I want to tell you about your father’s murderer. Who was it? Carolyn asks, consumed with anxiety and fear. Quentin hesitates to tell her, but she insists. He tells her it was Jeb. First surprised and then disgusted, she says Jeb wasn’t even in Collinsport when her father died. Then she loses her temper altogether and accuses Quentin and Barnabas of trying to keep her from Jeb. Quentin reluctantly says, I will tell you everything. At that moment Jeb rushes into the house, seemingly in great distress. Breathlessly he announces that Inspector Guthrie has been murdered. Philip is the murderer--and he has confessed to the other killings besides. Above Carolyn’s head, Quentin smiles in bitter disbelief......

Jeb says hello to his new pet: I’m glad to see you, bat of hell. You’re going to be meeting Barnabas Collins very soon, I promise you.

Totally unaware that Jeb has already started to work his revenge, Barnabas tells Julia that he and Jeb have reconciled.

In one of the last séances on the show, Barnabas, Julia, and Maggie call up the spirit of Josette. KLS does really shine here and in her last farewell scene with Barnabas.

After the séance, Barnabas realizes that they have to destroy the Leviathan box so that he, Julia, and Maggie will know who their enemies are. Jeb won’t let you get near the box, Julia warns. I must think of a way to get it, Barnabas replies. [A fly briefly lights on his shoulder but offers no advice.]

Carolyn breezes in, and Barn watches in dismay as she phones Jeb and arranges to have him come to Collinwood to pick her up for their missed date.

Maggie hurries to the antique shop and tells Jeb that she couldn't find out anything. Jeb is beginning to wonder if he can trust her, but Philip steps out of the back room and pointedly reminds Jeb that Carolyn is waiting. After Jeb leaves, Maggie tells Philip, Barnabas wants to meet you--and you’re not to tell Jeb. Not to tell Jeb? Why? Philip asks. Maggie simply looks at him without replying. Never mind, because you don’t have to tell me, Philip says. I understand completely.

At Eagle Hill, Barnabas tells Philip about his conversation with Jeb. Philip tells Barn about his conversation with Jeb and reveals that he's supposed to watch Barnabas to see if he's still loyal. Barnabas says, Now you know, and you can go tell Jeb how I’ve plotted against him. But Philip already hates Jeb for murdering the sheriff and Paul Stoddard and for what he's done to Megan. So it's not too hard for Barnabas to persuade him to get the box from Jeb's Room.

Jeb arrives early for his date, telling Carolyn, I couldn’t wait to see you. I’ve been thinking about you a lot too, she replies. Jeb knows exactly how she feels about him, but Pennock misses a cue here and says he’s working on it. I care about you, she says, but naturally that isn’t enough for Jeb. He says, Caring is for distant cousins and elderly aunts. How do you want me to feel about you? Carolyn asks. [Well, after all it was 1970!] I want you to love me and want me and need me, he tells her. Can you do that? I will try, she whispers, so her kisses her passionately. [Since he’s wearing a green sweater, like Adam’s, perhaps this means they were destined to become romantically involved.]

Barnabas stands at Josette’s grave, which bears the dates 1774-1795. All are ready to move against the Leviathans, he thinks to himself, all except me, because of my fears for Josette. For the last time, the music-box theme starts up. Barnabas calls out her name. She answers again, It is I, and I will tell you what you must know. Josette appears to him at her loveliest, in her white wedding gown and veil, with a white shawl over her arm. She is calm and at peace. She tells him, Now and forever... You asked me if the Leviathan held me prisoner. They do not. But you hold me just as I hold you with my love. Now the time has come for both of us to go free. I can’t be free without you! Barnabas pleads. But you must! she answers gently. I belong to the past. For you there is a future--with someone else. But I don’t want anyone else, Barnabas protests. Josette says sadly, Then you must be lonely--for you cannot have me. Seeking to comfort him, she continues, You will find someone else--I know it. When you do, give her this, the ring that you gave to me. Give to her, whoever she may be. She holds out her hand with the ring, and he reluctantly takes it. Josette slowly starts to fade from his sight for the last time as she says, This ring is a sign of your freedom--and of mine. Barnabas reaches out to her, but his hand touches only empty air. Josette! he cries desolately. You can’t go! You can’t go now! It is too cruel! But the thunder roars and the lightning flashes as he stands alone by her grave, holding the ring and thinking about her final words to him.

Carolyn tells Jeb about the dream she had of him at Little Windward Island. I was frightened, she says--you seem frightened too. I’m not frightened, he insists, just upset that you would think such a thing of me--blood on my hands. Carolyn presses his hand to her cheek as she tells him, I didn’t meant to see you that way. I didn’t cause the dream. Of course not, he laughs and holds her again. The clock chimes the quarter hour and Jeb notes the time. I told a friend of mine that we would meet him at the Blue Whale, he says. Naturally expecting a tête-à-tête, Carolyn is upset at Jeb’s inclusion of a third wheel. He’s sharp, you’ll like him, Jeb persists in his clueless Leviathan way. At that moment Barnabas returns. Are you off somewhere? he asks hopefully. Jeb says yes, but Carolyn nervously says she isn’t. I told Bruno we would meet at the Blue Whale, Jeb protests. I don’t want to meet someone new, Carolyn says. Jeb calls it ridiculous. Ridiculous, nothing! Carolyn says, getting angry. That is the way I feel about it, she tells him and runs upstairs. Jeb calls up to her but she ignores him, so he leaves without looking at Barnabas. Barnabas phones Philip. Jeb will be at the Blue Whale, he says. You can get the box now.

Quietly Philip enters Jeb’s room and turns on a light on a little table. The room is otherwise empty except for a large wardrobe. The presence of the wardrobe brings up an interesting question: Does Jeb own only the clothes he stands up in? Or does he keep them somewhere else? But why? And where? Or are his clothes an organic part of his human form? In any event, the wardrobe is likewise empty--except for the Leviathan box, sitting on the shelf. Philip takes it and leaves the room. He comes downstairs to the darkened shop. Suddenly the lights come up and Jeb is standing there. Going somewhere, Philip? he asks quietly. Isn’t it a bit too late?........

According to my notes, during the fight, the werewolf falls back, breaking the newel post away from the staircase. The actors have to step over it throughout the episode. Sheesh, they couldn't have given a stagehand 5 seconds to get it out of the way?!

Barn returns to find that the drawing room Willie so painstakingly restored is a shambles. Barnabas hesitates when he sees Jeb lying on the stairs. Is he wondering whether to finish what Chris started? We’ll never know, because at that moment Chris comes to and realizes what happened. We must get you out of the house, Barnabas says urgently. Chris spots Jeb on the stairs. Did I kill him? he wonders. Not this time, Barnabas says. I’ll explain later--I’ve been out all night looking for you. I don’t understand why you’re still protecting me, Chris says dismally. Because you need to be protected from him! Barnabas answers, indicating Jeb. Chris doesn’t understand. Go home, Barnabas tells him. Change your clothes and come back later. I promise to explain everything.

Jeb revives with an unmanly, un-Leviathanly shriek and blames Barnabas for not rescuing him. Affecting a wounded air, Barn takes the opportunity to tell him that he (B.) beat off the werewolf with his silver-headed cane. All this time I thought you would be glad to see me dead, Jeb says with some wonder. Perhaps the attack was a blessing in disguise, Barnabas suggests, because it has led to a reconciliation. Jeb is not completely reconciled, however. Why did you take Carolyn to Little Windward Island? he asks suspiciously. Barnabas starts with surprise but recovers enough to reply, I thought you were moving too fast. I did it for your own good. How did you know where Carolyn was? Jeb says Elizabeth told him. Barnabas’s eyes widen with horror, but Jeb says, She didn’t do it to betray you. She assumed I knew. Then somewhat sheepishly, Jeb admits that he went there himself in his true form. What did you do to her? Barnabas asks worriedly. Still upset, Jeb answers, Don’t worry. I didn’t do anything. I changed my mind because she was terrified of me in my true form. I can't be that way. I don't ever want her to feel that frightened of me. She has got to feel the same way about me that I feel about her. That is the way I want to have her, he declares, his sheer possessiveness still undiminished despite his dawning concern for Carolyn’s feelings. I have made up my mind, he finishes. Surprised and pleased, Barnabas smiles and comments, You’ve matured considerably and made a very wise decision. I guess I should have trusted you all along, Jeb replies. Amazingly, he adds, I apologize for not trusting you before. It’s all right, Barnabas assures him. The important thing is our reconciliation. Barnabas agrees to bring Carolyn back. Jeb even thanks him but luckily doesn’t see Barnabas’s relieved smile.

Angelique returns home the following morning, wearing a completely different hairdo (ringlets and so on) and outfit--a pink suit with a mink coat. She is furious with Sky for making her drive to the airport when he got himself home. Why did you send me on a wild-goose chase? she demands. Why did you want to get me out of the house? Sky laughs and apologizes, but although Angelique may have renounced her powers, she still doesn’t hesitate to show her displeasure. Sky explains, While I was waiting for you, I learned I was going to get an important phone call at home. Angelique practically weeps with relief that that was all, and they embrace. Sky reveals that Carolyn was alone in the house for a while. Angelique is immediately concerned, but Sky reassures her that Carolyn is all right. He suspects that Angelique is keeping a secret from him about Carolyn, but at that moment Barnabas arrives, and Angelique performs the introductions. He does a passable job of following Angelique’s improvisations. Angelique sends Sky to get Carolyn and tells Barnabas, Sky called me away from home, but I felt something awful might have happened. Jeb came to the house, Barnabas says and tells her what happened. Angelique is extremely concerned that Jeb was here--for an hour, according to Barnabas. They figure that Jeb came and went before Sky returned. I hate to think what would have happened if Sky had caught him! Angelique says. Does Jeb know you brought Carolyn here? He does, Barnabas replies, but because of something that happened earlier, I’m sure Jeb believes I’m still loyal. [Forever a gentleman, Barnabas is nothing if not discreet when necessary.] Therefore it will be easier for me to fight him. Jeb is a dangerous creature, Angelique warns. I’m extremely grateful for your help, Barnabas tells her. I was glad to help, she replies, but it’s been a terrible week and I’m glad it is over. While they wait for Sky and Carolyn, Barnabas gazes thoughtfully at Angelique’s portrait.

Sometime later, Angelique tells Sky her houseguests are gone. What is your secret? Sky asks. From the moment you told me about your visitors, and today when Barnabas came, you seemed very worried and nervous. I was upset about what happened last night, Angelique replied. I had to do with Barnabas and those people, Sky says. Carolyn was under a strain after her father’s death, Angelique says. I don’t believe you, Sky replies. Carolyn seemed fine last night and this morning. Why did Barnabas come pick her up? Sky demands. He was concerned, Angelique says. I am concerned about us, Sky replies. Remember what we agreed to before we were married--no secrets. Was Carolyn brought here for another reason than what you told me? Angelique avoids answering and assures him, I have never kept anything from you that concerns us. But Sky instantly infers, There was another reason why Carolyn was here. Sad and upset, Angelique admits, There was--but please don’t ask me. We’ll play by your rules, Sky says angrily. Obviously secrets are now allowed. Angelique hurries to him and actually kneels before his chair in contrition. Please don’t bother about the Collinses anymore, she pleads. I was never involved, Sky answers. You were, and I’m sorry you don’t trust me enough to say what happened. I do trust you, Angelique insists. Sky says, Let’s go back to Rule 1: No secrets. Angelique turns away in sadness, and Sky coldly gets up and starts to leave. Finally she breaks down and agrees to tell him everything she knows. She tells him, Carolyn was here because her life was in danger from the Leviathans, dangerous creatures, completely evil, who mean to start a whole new society. For a long time Barnabas was associated with them, but now he has become their most dedicated enemy. He means to use every power he has to stop them. Sky listens intently to Angelique’s unwitting confirmation of Barnabas’s betrayal.

Still later, Sky comes to the shop to see Jeb. Jeb is concerned that Sky has blown their cover, but Sky says, I’ve come to tell you the truth about Barnabas Collins. Barnabas was lying, Jeb fumes, everything he said was a lie! And here I thought he had saved my life. I’m grateful to you--and your wife. Sky says, Angelique doesn’t know I’m here. She will never know, Jeb replies. What will you do? Sky asks. Have you ever known a vampire? Jeb asks with a wry smile. Laughing, Sky says no. Well, you will--very soon, Jeb says grimly.

Meanwhile, Chris Jennings returns to the Old House. His first question is, The man I attacked--is he still alive? I’m sorry to say he is, Barnabas replies. Chris is amazed. Barnabas explains, His name is Jeb Hawkes. Remember that name. He is the most dangerous enemy that you have. Chris assumes Jeb knows about him, too. Barnabas explains, He knows about the werewolf. He doesn't know it is you. Between now and the next full moon he will do everything he can to find out. When he does, you are as good as dead when the moon is full again. With his great-grandfather’s own bitter humor, Chris opines, Since I haven’t found an answer to my problem, maybe I should just introduce myself to Jeb and tell him to make a clean job of it at the next full moon. Barnabas nixes that idea: He is not only your enemy, but he is mine and Carolyn's and Sabrina's. What about Sabrina? Chris asks anxiously. She has nothing to do with it, Barnabas replies--except that she is human, and Jeb is against all humanity. What kind of man is he? Chris asks in amazement and horror. A man that deserves to be destroyed, Barnabas answers grimly. I am going to destroy him--as soon as I can find the way.

That night, Jeb goes to an unknown cemetery, carrying a small wire cage. He searches the headstones till he finds a satisfactory one: Richard Fairbanks, 1730-1770. Since we are in 1970, Jeb is pleased at the date of Fairbanks’s death--and even more pleased that Fairbanks was hanged for murdering his wife and children. You’re just the man to help me now, and this is just the place to make it happen, he says with satisfaction. Jeb performs his incantation: Here at the unquiet grave of a murderer, next to a hangman's work, I beseech the dark spirits of the underworld to hear me--to release from its fiery depths the avenger I need to strike down the traitor Barnabas Collins! He is an enemy to us all--especially to me! Your death is suitable for a murderer. But for Barnabas Collins, there has to be more! MORE!! MOOOOORE!!!! he howls in conclusion. The elementals apparently agree with him as yet another storm starts up with the usual thunder, lightning and roaring wind. He opens the cage and waits till he hears what to us is a horribly familiar squeaking sound. A bat flies out of the night and voluntarily enters the cage, which Jeb then closes again.........

Traveling bullets, my goodness!

MT, I hope you're not disappointed by the definition of "widget."

And I love your idea for a Blue Whale round table, maybe with Bob the Bartender as moderator.

I think the Supreme Leviathan/Jeb's ego is so vast that the concept that anyone--especially its/his intended bride--would find it hideous never, ever crossed what passes for its/his mind. Maybe not so much innocent as naive--although it's strange to think of a murderous being as naive.

A lot of the Collins family's dynamics were so very un-1966. A would-be patricidal boy--not once but twice!--a man who married his grandmother, yikes!

And the dear old bleeder valve, going where no bleeder valve had gone before.  [ghost_cheesy]

Geoffrey Scott (Sky Rumson) does the VO.

I like how this ep. uses the power of suggestion to get us to imagine the Supreme Leviathan appearing in all his/its glory to his/its chosen bride: Still screaming, Carolyn backs away from the doors, but she trips over an inconvenient pillow and falls unconscious to the floor on a convenient fur rug. We see the ensuing scene through the Leviathan supreme being’s eyes--or at least through whatever it uses for photoreceptors. The heavy breathing approaches. A huge, formless shadow looms over our insensible heroine as the creatures gazes down at her. After a moment, the breathing slows. The shadow recedes, and the breathing stops altogether. We hear human footsteps, then Jeb Hawkes is at Carolyn’s side. He kneels down, holds her close and murmurs, I couldn’t go through with it. If she could only hear me and understand. Oh, I want you so much to understand. Carolyn murmurs faintly but does not awaken.

Sky approaches the designated bridal suite and listens for a moment outside the door, perhaps with a prurient interest in Leviathan mating practices? In any case, he hears only silence (STILL no sex on this show!)

Also funny to see Jeb's shock and mortified vanity when he talks to Sky right afterward. Well, he is somewhat distressed for Carolyn's sake, but not very much. He seems to find her golden hair just as attractive as Adam did, long ago. He tells Sky to "clean up the evidence"--does he mean those acid-burned holes in the carpet?

Out in the woods, the werewolf clutches its chest in pain--even though Bruno shot it in the ribs.

Elizabeth is in full Mistress of Collinwood mode when Bruno arrives, but then she doesn't even blink when he invites her into her own drawing room, helps himself to Roger's brandy, and puts his feet up on the table. They hear the werewolf howl again, and Bruno decides to find it and finish it off, DESPITE what Jeb told him about silver bullets. A few moments later, Jeb saunters in as if he owns Collinwood and introduces himself to his prospective mother-in-law.

Bruno just misses seeing the werewolf. After he goes by, the creature stops and nurses its shoulder, even though Bruno shot it in the ribs.

Jeb tells Elizabeth that Barnabas is no longer in charge. He tells her, I’ve met Carolyn and I’m very impressed with her. I am as interested in her welfare as you are. She definitely has a future with us, he says as if Carolyn were a candidate for a middle-management job at a widget-making company.

Bruno returns to Collinwood. Elizabeth says goodnight and goes upstairs without showing her visitors out. Jeb charges out to find the werewolf, despite Bruno's warnings. Presumably Bruno stays at Collinwood and helps himself to more of Roger's brandy.

Jeb passes the rocks on his way to the Old House. The werewolf growls from somewhere nearby. Jeb makes a run for the Old House, with the werewolf not far behind. Jeb enters the house, then shuts and locks the door. Barnabas! I need you! he screams but gets no reply. A flash of lightning shows the werewolf staring in through the window; pure terror suffuses Jeb’s face as he spots it. The werewolf suddenly crashes in through the window as Jeb backs away. The creature knocks over a candelabrum, and the room is plunged into darkness.......

I suppose the Leviathans think of it as a "marriage." Jeb even has Sky for his best man.

I always wondered about those weird dreams too. I wondered if Jeb was actually sending them, or whether Paul was trying to reach his daughter from Beyond the Veil. But nobody ever mentions that possibility, so I suppose it's Jeb. He's vain and swell-headed enough to think that he can wow Carolyn with his murderous, blood-soaked omnipotence and acid-oozing true form.

Maybe Barn thought that Carolyn would be more protected at Angelique's place because it's on an island and harder to get to. We never do find out how Leviathan Jeb gets to the island. Can Leviathans fly? Or swim? (although those don't look like merely wet footprints) Maybe he just took giant steps? Or maybe he just took the ferry as Jeb.

Anyway, MT, your posts are always welcome, regardless of the word count!

Thanks, MT! That's the last time I remember seeing Angelique having a drink, in any case. And that self-congratulatory Champagne toast in 1795 was a doozy.

Luckily for us, Ned Stuart is away for the night. Surely not on a date! Does anyone ever mention him again? I doubt it. I don't think we ever see him again, but I'm not sure. The more self-actualizing Sabrina becomes, the more invisible he gets.  [ghost_cheesy]

I've heard that too, Uncle Roger! DS seems to be a very gracious sort of guy.
