Indeed, the Jason storyline was magnificent. Great acting on all parts. Being pre-Barnabas for most of the time, it remains little known outside of DS fanatics. I don't ever recall in later years a mention that Liz had not left the estate for 18 years. Such a strong and dominant woman, yet too fearful to leave home. Great job by the great Joan Bennett.

Since DS copied so much from the classics, the writers should have given Barnabas the classic line from Dracula, when the Count is offered a drink: "I never drink... wine."

Jason put a few away in the Blue Whale too, but he was too smart and shifty to ever let himself get drunk.

The Barnabas Collins game new and still sealed was going on ebay for about $200. Sellers of used versions always make the point about whether or not they contain the "original fangs." So I guess it's better to have fangs that were in some kid's mouth once than not.

Thanks for the info. Those ABC memos must be interesting. I wonder if Diana Millay has ever taken any bows for saving the show.

All of this is news to me. I've heard the story countless times, including many times from Dan Curtis himself, that it was Barnabas/Frid who saved the show. I've never heard the show was already guaranteed renewal during the Laura storyline. Can anyone cite something definitive?

Magnus,
Thank you for that great answer. Of course that explains Sam's blindness. I remember that very touching part of the Frankenstein Karloff movie. I should have made the connection.

I never quite understood why poor Sam lost one of his five senses. Wasn't he tormented enough getting burned by Laura?

I'm on this board a month or so and I've noticed a recurring hostility to Roger Davis and/or his characters. I was wondering why.

I never knew Paul Stoddard's ghost was supposed to take that part taken by Peter Bradford. In either case, it was ridiculous to have Vicki killed off.

One plot line I didn't like, which no one has mentioned, was killing off Burke Devlin. He was one of my favorite characters. I'd have been happier if they had him leave on business after a breakup with Vicki.

He was justified only if he honestly didn't believe he did anything wrong in 1795. This would not have been the case with Gregory Trask, but the original actually thought he was doing the right thing.

Dear Sunny,

May you live as long as Barnabas... but under better conditions.

Happy Birthday!

I do hope Jonathan reconsiders and is part of the 1968 show. The place would be ecstatic!
