I enjoyed Eve's speechless response to Liz's calling her the Angel of Death. It's almost as if this woman, who's just been transported from the 18th Century and placed into a new body in the 20th, is thinking to herself, "Man, this old lady is too crazy even for me," as she hightails it off the premises.

I always love to speculate which particular movie the characters are heading off to see on their dates. As this is 1968, I like to imagine that it is "Rosemary's Baby" and that Jeff and Vickie laugh their fool heads off at all the devilish doings, calling the filmmakers rank amateurs and fact-checking the story as it goes.

Yea, but at least they had food at her parties!   [ghost_wink]

Thanks, dom. Apparently, this version of Adam and Eve didn't include the edict to "be fruitful and multiply."

Prof Stokes calling someone else "an insufferable egotist" is a bit rich, I must say.

I love how they make such a big deal about Barnabas' refusal to avail himself of any of the technological advancements of the modern age, then he drives over to Nicholas' place in Prof. Stoke's car (exactly when did he learn how to drive?).

Funny how the plotters all naturally assume that Adam and Eve are sleeping in separate bedrooms, though one of them does hint that Adam may be at least "visiting" Eve in her room late at night.

Does Barnabas give the most meager parties ever? No food, teeny tiny glasses of sherry - then, for the company, he invites the boor (or is it bore?) of the century (namely Stokes) to lull everyone into a catatonic state by going on and on about the history of the house and of the Collins family. It's clear that Nicholas just can't wait to get out of there. At least at Barnabas' earlier party, the guests got to wear costumes.

Is this the prettiest AM ever looked on this show? All I can say is "Wow!"

As for Elizabeth, for a woman without a pulse or heartbeat, there sure was a lot of chest-heaving going on.

I, too, loved the pre-Barnabas feel of this episode.

The magic mirror in Nickolas' parlor is the closest anyone on DS ever came to watching TV. Adam certainly seemed enthralled by the drama he saw unfolding there. I half expected a voice to come on announcing, "Meanwhile, in another part of the estate," or "Tune in tomorrow for another exciting installment of 'Life in a Small New England Town.'"  [snow_laugh]

A couple of things stand out about this episode.

One is just how important good writing is to the success of DS, and this one has it in spades. Lots of complex relationship stuff with all sorts of seething emotions just barely bubbling to the surface before being submerged again.

Second is just how blessed DS was in its actors. Everyone here really understands the roles they're playing, and, in a story line that could have easily provided endless opportunities for hamming it up and camping around, the actors keep it relateable by underplaying beautifully (especially Robert Rodan and Humbert Allen Astredo).

Finally, it struck me while watching this episode, just how far we've drifted from the original vision of DS. No Elizabeth, no Roger, no Carolyn, no Vicki, no David, no Maggie, no Joe. They're all still in the series, of course, but they have, for the most part, been shunted far from the center of the action.

Excellent episode.

A David/Adam relationship plot line might have made some sense (a child relating to/teaching a child), but it might have seemed too much like the recent David/Sarah secret-friendship scenario at that point. It would have seemed redundant.

Yea, I'm not a big fan of either the character or the story line either, but they sure picked a fine actor for the occasion.

I was thunderstruck by Robert Rodan's performance in this episode. He was totally in control of the character from beginning to end and never hit a single false note in his portrayal of a confused, troubled soul caught in immense moral conflict. It seemed like so many contradictory thoughts and feelings were pulsing through Adam in this installment, and Rodan conveyed each one brilliantly. Very impressive work. [snow_wow]

Yea, it's sad that that bond between Vickie and David seems to dissipate over time. At this point in the story, it's barely even mentioned that Vickie is David's governess, and they have very few scenes together.

For some reason, I really like AM's acting in this episode. She seems very poignant and wistful throughout, demonstrating how very effective understatement can be in conveying a person's mood or personality. Vickie seems genuinely confused, sad and almost resigned to losing Jeff for a reason she can't understand.

Nicely done.

I just wanted so badly for Roger to turn to Carolyn at some point and say, "For some reason, Kitten, you just don't seem yourself today."  [snow_laugh]

I have mixed feelings about Roger's offering the job to Jeff. Yes, it was nice of him to do so, but it also had an air of condescension to it that was a little off-putting - as if Jeff had no say in what direction his life would take. It seemed rather imperious to me, which is not that surprising coming from Roger. And I really don't think Roger had a right to be as angered by the refusal as he was.

I agree that it's nice seeing so many of the original cast members back together in a single episode. It reminds me that there are times when I really miss the pre-Barnabas Dark Shadows.

It's interesting to see Professor Stokes, who is always so used to getting the better of other people through his wit and erudition, finding himself suddenly impotent when confronted by physical superiority and violence. He looks like a sad, defeated figure when he trudges up the Old House basement stairs, having been unsuccessful in getting Adam to see things his way.

Vickie and Maggie's lives seem to be charting parallel courses lately. Both have boyfriends whose inexplicable sullenness and secretiveness are beginning to drive a wedge right through their romantic relationships, mainly by keeping them from spending time together as a couple. Add to that, both have now fallen victim to Angelique's bite. They may need to form a support group soon.
