We'll have to agree to disagree there.
I consider the DS novels by Parker and Rainey, and the comics and audios to be part of the same ongoing story as the tv series. They are offically licenced stories following the same storyline and that's not the same as fan fiction imo. The audios even use the original actors.
The Ross novels, the old comics and HODS and NODS are in the own seperate continuities because they weren't trying to fit into the original series continuity, just in case that comes up.
It's a familiar debate with any fandom with spin off media, as to what counts and what doesn't. I tend to embrace a larger world view of what counts as real DS, it makes for a richer more complex, and larger, experience. I understand not everyone's going to feel the same way and that's ok too.

The novels (Dreams of the Dark) and the audios (Return to Collinwood) have both established Liz as Vicki's mother, as did the Innovation comic series for the Revial Series, but neither went into much details on why Liz gave Viki away and didn't acknowledge her.
I think there's a good chance this may get explored in Lara Parker's upcoming novels, as Wolf Moon is supposed to have some flashbacks of a young Liz, and the in progress 4th novel focuses on Vicki. Maybe we'll finally get some answers (especially on the identity of her father) - as well as some closure to Vicki's fate.
I'm also still holding out hope that someday Alexandra Moltke Isles will do some audio plays.
It is kind of neat that the story of Vicki, and DS, is still unfolding :)

Tate for sure. It might come to life or make me immortal, or at least would probably be worth more money than Sam's work.

Who's the sexier werewolf, Quentin or Chris?

Those are some really interesting points Magnus. I'd never quite thought about the possibility that Barnabas could have come out of the coffin in 1967 with a vendetta against the family.
I've always been a bit obsessed with how Barnabas forms relationships with the family in all time periods. I may be projecting this more than the writers intended, but it seems to me that, for example, since Liz, Flora and Judith all so strongly resemble Naomi, that Barnabas naturally has a quick fondness for them.
Barnabas's love of his family is a defining trait of the character, but not one that is given much focus of discussion.
I do think that Barnabas agreeing to be staked, and Joshua's subsequent decision to instead chain him in the coffin indefinitely works with the characters and the story. Victoria's hanging makes for a powerful climax to the story imo.

My patience has finally worn out on waiting for the DS series to get released in tpb. I have the Vampirella crossover pre ordered already in tpb, but have gone ahead and ordered DS 5-19 and Year One 1-4, which includes the next couple of upcoming months pre ordered, from Dynamite.
I am really psyched about getting to read these, especially since I'll be getting so many of them at once! Between this, the return of the DS audios starting this month and Lara Parker's new DS novel coming out in August there's a lot of new DS coming up to look forward to!

what was however extremely obvious to me was that revealing Carolyn to be a werewolf in the film's last five minutes was a crude setup for a Quentin themed sequel...

one that may not even feature Barnabas.
Before I ever saw the movie, I was speculating that a Barnabas - free sequel focusing on Quentin would be an option, seeing as how Depp would be in demand and possibly unavailable for the sequel.
I also thought that with Victoria clearly to be paired with Barnabas and no Maggie cast, that perhaps Maggie could be brought into the sequel as a love intrest for Quentin.
Clearly I was wrong on the last part.
I'd still be all for a Quentin driven sequel. There's all kinds of potential for DS beyond Barnabas, but I'm not sure the studio would go for it.

The DS movie made money, which imo means it wasn't a complete failure.
I think there's a good chance for a new movie or tv series some day. Interest in vampires never really goes away, and the level of interest peaks every few years with a new re invention.
In the meantime, we have the old serieses, plus old and new ongoing spin off material, novels, audio drama, comics.

I'm dying with all the delays to Lara Parker's book, been waiting for YEARS! I'm psyched from what I've heard about book 4 in progress.
The Vampirella cross over date keeps getting moved back and forth. I'm also waiting on the second volume of the regular comic series. I originally got the tpb of the first collection as it's a nicer format and I figured surely the next volume would be out in six months or so, a reasonable wait. I didn't allow for such excructiating delays.
Oh well, it's still nice to have new DS stories to look forward to (and now Year One too!) and the Big Finish audios begin releasing their new series of linked dramatic readings this month too. It's a good time to be a DS fan with so many new stories upcoming.

Current Talk '13 I / Re: '90 Series Question

It was set in the 1990/1991 time period - except for the time travel story to 1791.

In the book both Margaret and Carrie are very overweight. Considering this is the third Carrie movie, I think sticking closer to the book would at least be a worthy reason to remake the movie again.
Still want to see it though. I love Julianne Moore, and I think she'll be great in such an extreme role.

I agree on Margaret's looks, but Carrie's weight is heavier, and I think an important element in the novel, yet this makes the third movie to have Carrie be thin and pretty if she'd only get a makeover, which is ugly in a Hollywood movie.
I love Julianne Moore, and have no doubt she is going to rock hard in this role. I also like Chloe, and am sure she'll be good. I'm a big Stephen King fan, and Carrie is a good story. Really looking forward to this - not many movies really grab my attention any more it seems.

Current Talk '13 I / Re: April 2... the Widows Wail Again

I was only a few weeks old when the series ended, so I didn't discover the series until many years later. I first got into DS when I found old Marion Ross paperbacks at a used book store, being interested by all things gothic and vampires. Then years later I discovered the vhs tapes and was able to watch the actual show.
I do find it a little disapointing that the finale is a bit week - the last minute change to the bite just being a harmless animal bite is lame. It would've been so much better for DS to have gone out with one last chilling moment. But then it's a let down for the series to end in 1841 PT anyways. Even though I enjoy the story, it had no ties to the main characters of the series.
It does have the distinction of being the only tv series to end 115 years before it began in a whole different timeline.
And there's been the Revival series, the new novels, and the ongoing audio dramas, and the new movie...so DS is still alive and well for me at least. The medium may change, but I'm anxiously awaiting new stories with my favorite characters in the cds (which begin their new "season" of dramatic readings next month), Lara Parker's Wolf Moon novel coming out this fall (and some really intriguing details for the plot of her still being written fourth DS novel recently discussed), the comics (which have been hit or miss so far but the Year One 1795 adaptation looks promising...DS is still an ongoing story for me.

for what it's worth GH was playing in my employee cafeteria today and i caught a few seconds...

lucy cowe(a character i recall from my youth)was freaking out on some guy calling him a "vampire". it seemed like he wasn't and she was just acting hysterical but i never watch the show anymore and had no context to put it into. but it was embarrassing and out of place.

the supernatural story arc is generally the shark jump for soaps. it almost never works. through some remarkable bit of alchemy and happenstance it worked on DS but i've never seen it succeed elsewhere.

i'm recalling some outer space plot on OLTL back in the 80's. wasn't it called "eterna"? and wasn't the main character on DOOL possessed by satan at some point on the 90's? if i remember correctly both storylines became major points of ridicule before the shows' writers came to their senses and abandoned them. i really hope GH doesn't "go there".
I thought PC was a fun show in it's own right. It was certainly more interesting with vampires and slayers.
On OLTL Viki had an anuerism and while hovering between life and death she went to Heaven, which was a giant spaceship where old loved ones and enemies who had passed on were living. At least two of the characters were later revealed to be alive, but it didn't stop Viki from making a brief return visit years later.
Eterna, also on OLTL, was a secret underground city built by a cult that had long since died, and was the hiding place for a fortune in lost Nazi gold. OLTL also did time travel stories to the Old West, and back to the 60s. I love the kookie stories they used to do.
Marlena on DOOL was possesed by the Devil for awhile in the 90s, and I thought the story was a lot of fun.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Re: KLS' Holiday Gift Bonus
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:59:12 AM »
For what it's worth several years ago I bought several autographed pictures of KLS from her website (my bedroom is decorated with autographed DS pictures and one large gorgeous B&W poster of KLS and Frid as Barnabas and Maggie in the Old House) and she sent me a bonus autographed picture and a very nice hand written letter. So I think of her as being a very nice, warm person who appreciates her fans.

The only point is just to speculate on things going on in the show, possible subtext, and a greater understanding of the characters. It's actually a big topic that I've never seen discussed much.
I do agree that the show went to great pains to portray Maggie and Vicki as "virtuous" and thus virginal, but from a modern point of view we can see more options. It wouldn't be unrealistic to think that Maggie and Joe, or Vicki and Jeff had a sexual relationship, even if the series didn't show it.
It is interesting to examine how Carolyn is portrayed in the early years as being less pure. It's hinted pretty broadly that she was getting high and sleeping with Buzz for example. Of course it's a standard stereotype that the "good" heroines like Maggie and Vicki were virginal, yet there are characters like Carolyn and Beth who were more sexualy liberated even if they are a little more complex in their morality.
I think it's worth noting that the flashbacks may have been more "loose" in their portrayal of sexuality.
