Wow, MT, are we really looking right at the creature? I don't remember--I only remember another set of slimy/acid-burned/whatever footprints.

Uncle Roger, interesting thought about Amy's part originally being intended for David. If I remember, she originally blew hot and cold about being a Leviathan. Apparently she doesn't know that Jeb considers her brother one of his archenemies.

I think David Henesy is still in a wheelchair, so that gives credence to your theory.

Quentin warns Maggie to be careful that Jeb doesn't find out she isn't a true Leviathan. They embrace again. But that doesn't matter to Amy, who has been spying on them. She leaves quietly without either of the other two knowing she was there.

Elizabeth is reading in her room when Amy tells her, Maggie Evans opened the Box. Jeb already told me secretly, Elizabeth replies. Amy bursts out, Maggie and Quentin and Barnabas are all fighting the Leviathans, even though Barnabas was one of our leaders! Her expression suddenly cold, Elizabeth tells Amy, Tell me what happened.

The pitchfork marks on Quentin's and Maggie's hands have disappeared. Mutually embarrassed, they decide that not mentioning the incident again is the best option. Elizabeth walks in just as Maggie is retrieving Barn's ring from the fireplace. I want you to help me carry some books upstairs, Elizabeth explains, as Mrs. Johnson has already gone to bed. [Has she broken her own rule about never sleeping at Collinwood?] Elizabeth leads the way upstairs, and Amy watches from her hiding place in the corner under the stairs.

Amy gets her coat, opens the door--and is surprised to see Willie Loomis on the doorstep. [Welcome back, Willie!] He has graduated from a short jacket to a trenchcoat, but his hair (in a new style) is almost wild. He gives her a friendly greeting and asks where she’s going so late. On an errand, she says evasively. He asks for Barnabas and Julia, but she says they’re not here. Willie walks in to wait and asks for Maggie. Amy says she won’t be back for the rest of the night. Willie decides to make a phone call, and Amy heads out, she says to get her bicycle.

Elizabeth locks Maggie in the Tower Room. Maggie quickly realizes that somehow Elizabeth must have overheard her and Quentin. She looks out the window, but it’s a long way down.

Willie is talking on the phone, blowing kisses to "Precious" when Elizabeth calls out his name, and not in a friendly way, either. He quickly hangs up and explains that Julia sent for him. Elizabeth coldly tells him that she and Barnabas are out. Willie asks to wait. Barnabas won’t be back tonight, Elizabeth assures him coldly, and Julia doesn’t tell me how she spends her time. Oblivious in his happiness, Willie smiles and asks if he looks different, then says he’s going to get married. Congratulations, Elizabeth says flatly. Willie starts to rhapsodize about his intended but quickly realizes that Elizabeth has no patience or interest. He asks for Maggie again. I haven’t the faintest idea where Maggie is, Elizabeth says loftily. Why don’t you go to the Old House. Politely he says goodbye and leaves.

As Willie walks through the woods to the Old House, he thinks about Elizabeth’s cold demeanor and what it might mean. He hears someone else coming and ducks behind a handy tree. To his surprise Amy Jennings passes by--on foot. Wondering where Amy’s bicycle is, Willie decides to follow her.

Amy returns to Collinwood, where Elizabeth is waiting by the open doors. I didn’t see Willie in the woods, Amy assures her. Is Maggie is locked in the room? she asks. Yes, Elizabeth replies. Is _he_ coming? After they go inside the house, Willie emerges from the shrubbery and looks up at the Tower Room.

Was it right to tell Jeb? Elizabeth wonders. He was very glad, Amy says bright. Why did Maggie turn against us? Elizabeth asks. The main thing is that she did, Amy answers stonily. That is the only important thing. He is coming to take care of it soon. The little girl looks positively diabolical at the thought.

Upstairs, Willie climbs through a window in the corridor and runs to Maggie’s room. He calls to her but gets no answer.

Elizabeth wonders if Jeb will come to the house in his true form--is she worried about damage to the floors? Amy doesn't know. Next, Elizabeth frets that all the talk about the two murders--of the sheriff and Paul--will start up again--and that everyone will know Philip is innocent because he's safely in jail. Amy says that Jeb was very angry. Poor Maggie! Elizabeth says sadly. Maggie is a traitor, Amy reminds her coldly. Elizabeth and Amy realize that Willie Loomis is hiding outside the drawing room, so Elizabeth tells Amy, Check on Maggie and tell her that Jeb is coming. When Amy emerges from the drawing room, Willie ducks into the servants’ door, then follows her upstairs.

In her sweetest voice, Amy tells Maggie that Jeb is coming. Somehow Willie unlocks the door, and Maggie falls into his arms. We can see a shadow rush by outside the door and the next moment, Amy has locked them both in. It’s a trap! Willie yells, and outside Amy smiles a very satisfied smile indeed. If anything, Willie is even more scared than Maggie. She bursts into tears at the thought that she got him into this. Willie sits down next to her. “Old Willie” will figure out something, he assures her.

Downstairs, Elizabeth and Amy are waiting by the open front doors. I’m sorry Willie got involved, Elizabeth muses sadly, especially after he told me about the life he was going to have. He tried to save Maggie, the implacable Amy points out. There is nothing I can do about it now, Elizabeth says resignedly, and asks Amy to take her hand as they walk into the drawing room, leaving the front doors open. The front doors suddenly slam shut, and heavy breathing accompanies the tracks--mud from outside? some sloughed-off residue? or acid burns in the floor?--of the Leviathan beast from the front door up the stairs.

Willie is struggling uselessly to get the door open. What happens now? he asks Maggie. She shakes her head, and suddenly they hear the breathing sounds coming down the hall toward the room. What breathes like that? Willie asks in amazement and horror. Maggie jumps into his arms, and they clutch each other, terrified, in the middle of the room. The breathing sounds turn to rasping snarls.....

Right on, Uncle Roger. It is odd, isn't it, that Nicholas doesn't show the slightest interest in Maggie this time around. Maybe his, um, superiors warned him against making that particular mistake again.

I am enjoying how loyal Quentin is to Barnabas and Angelique's honesty too.

KLS does the voiceover.

Angelique wraps one of Sky's neckties around the statuette. Once he's unconscious, she tells him that she really did love him after all.

Maybe Barn did send a bat signal to Maggie. If so, he seems to have done it in the gentlest way possible. But yeah, that ring. Oh boy. They hug, but finally his bloodlust gets the better of him. He is about to sink his fangs into her throat when Quentin shouts, Excuse me! (Quentin is wearing his gray suit, an appropriately old-fashioned number with high-cut lapels.) Maggie steps away as Barnabas recovers himself. Quentin says, I have to talk to you right. Maggie, please excuse us. Barnabas suggests Maggie go inside and promises to talk to her tomorrow. After she leaves, Quentin says, I don’t need to ask what would have happened if I hadn’t arrived when I did. Ashamed, Barnabas examines his feet as he agrees. Quentin reminds Barnabas, You must stay away from Maggie. You know you can only hurt her in your present state. Angry with himself, Barnabas says, I know that! I can’t help myself! Quentin points, The sun will be up any minute. Julia is having trouble locating Willie Loomis, so I will guard you during the day until she comes back with Willie. So saying, he practically frog-marches Barnabas to the Old House.

Maggie admires the ring, which she wears on her left hand.

Quentin keeps his word and is trying to get comfortable in a chair at the Old House when Angelique arrives. He gives her a peck on the cheek. They size each other up and note that neither has aged. Quentin reminds her that she said they would see each other again. I was hoping to see Barnabas, Angelique replies, but I am obviously too late. What do you mean? Quentin asks, ready to protect Barnabas. Angelique quickly says, I saw him earlier. I know what happened to him. Barnabas came to the island and told me that my husband had betrayed him to Jeb. Quentin is shocked, but Angelique--her voice still laced with disgust--continues, Sky was one of the Leviathans before I met him. I left him tonight, and I am never going back to him. Quentin is genuinely sorry and offers to help. There’s nothing you can do, she says sadly and actually admits, My past interest in you was just a device to upset Barnabas. I was very good at devices. I always have been. Perhaps, in spite of my feelings for Sky, Barnabas has always been my one true love. I will wait until the evening to see him. Quentin notes how tired she looks, and tells her to go upstairs and rest. She agrees: I am glad to be back in this house, which I once knew so well. For a while, I was very happy here. This is where it all started. She decides to sleep in Josette’s room. I suppose the fact that she was Josette's maid still stings.

Sky arrives. Angelique comes downstairs. Sky asks to see his wife alone, and Quentin goes to the basement to warn Barnabas that he has guests.

Sky offers Angelique a deal: Nick is okay with her going back to Sky IF and ONLY IF she becomes a Leviathan. She refuses. I refuse to have any part of your side or of Nicholas Blair, Angelique replies flatly. I will come back to you only if you become your own man again. It’s too late for that, Sky says without any apparent regret. That proves you don’t really love me, Angelique replies, so we have nothing more to say to each other: Go and tell _your master_ that my answer is no. Sky grabs her shoulders and turns her to face him, but she shouts at him to leave. He agrees but promises, I’ll be waiting for you. He leaves the house, and Angelique watches through the window with great sadness as he walks away. Barnabas enters the room silently, waiting till she notices him. When she does, she runs into his arms, and he returns her embrace.

Though the again unhuman Barnabas can take neither food nor drink, Angelique can, and he brings her a small, restorative cordial. Quentin has been very kind and understanding, she says, then admits, You were right about everything. I have been a complete fool. Graciously Barnabas says, You don’t have to talk about it. She admits to telling Sky about everything. Very kindly Barnabas says, You had no way of knowing. I realize you didn’t do it to hurt me deliberately. I did the first time, Angelique says quietly. That was a long time ago, Barnabas says magnanimously. It is best forgotten. It’s all so ironic, Angelique comments, how it has happened again in just the same way. I think it must mean something for us. Barnabas ventures, I hope we can become closer friends than before. But Angelique has higher hopes. I want to start again from the beginning, she says. This upsets Barnabas, but Angelique pursues her topic: We have so much in common, both being outcasts. Neither of us has a chance for a normal life. When Nicholas Blair came back into the picture-- Barnabas is horrified to hear  that Nicholas has returned. Angelique says, When I saw him with Sky, I knew you had told me the truth. But she feels the first twinges of jealousy when Barnabas immediately decides, I must warn Maggie. She was involved with Nicholas once--it was almost the end of her. Please wait for me--we have much to talk about. But even in her servant days, Angelique was never good at obeying orders; she follows the oblivious Barnabas a moment after he leaves.

The camera pans up Maggie’s legs as once again Barnabas meets her on the terrace. She is shocked that Nicholas has returned. Barnabas warns her, Jeb will tell Nicholas that you are a Leviathan, and Nicholas will want to see you. Don’t worry, Maggie says, I think I know what to do. Be very, very careful with Nicholas, Barnabas warns her. He is dangerous, and if he finds out you aren’t on his side, your life will be in jeopardy. He pulls her into his arms, adding, I wouldn’t want that to happen--you mean far too much to me. As they embrace, Angelique watches from behind the gate, then turns away.

At 11:20, Quentin is in the drawing room with Maggie. Stay away from Barnabas, he warns her. The Leviathans are out to kill him, and they may do it through you. I would never hurt Barnabas! Maggie insists. The Leviathans may use you to trap him, Quentin explains.

Wrapped up in her leopard-skin coat, Angelique is just outside the drawing-room windows. You asked me if there was any way that you could help me, Quentin, she says to herself. Well, there is--only you’ll never be aware of it. A green light suddenly washes over her face as she goes into spell-casting mode. I am what I was and what I shall always be, she says. I summon a flame to transmit the power of love!

Meanwhile, Maggie and Quentin’s discussion has somewhat degenerated and is not far short of an argument. Maggie declares emphatically, I will continue to see Barnabas--and there’s nothing you can do to stop me. Suddenly Maggie notices that spontaneous combustion has occurred in the fireplace. Quentin doesn’t know how it happened either, and they suddenly gaze at each other with new eyes.

Meanwhile, Angelique tells them, You will look into the flame as though it were a mirror to the future--your future of love. There is no turning back now. You are prisoners of your love for each other. After gazing into her eyes a moment longer, Quentin takes Maggie in his arms and kisses her passionately. Maggie uses her last bit of free will to ask, What is happening? I don’t know, Quentin replies. She takes off Josette’s ring and without a second thought throws it into the fireplace. As she and Quentin kiss again, we see a black pitchfork on the back of Angelique’s hand. She tells the oblivious Quentin and Maggie, This is the sign that binds you, the sign of your love for each other. Whenever it appears, no power on earth can keep you apart.

Maggie and Quentin slowly move apart and stare into each other’s eyes some more. This is crazy! Maggie exclaims. I have the feeling it is right, Quentin says. A moment later Maggie says, Yes, but it can’t be! Then Quentin notices the black pitchfork on the back of his hand, and Maggie notices the identical mark on her hand a moment later.....

SOOOOO.... Why should Maggie be horrified that Nicholas has returned? When he was dragged back to hell in 1968, all she remembered was that they had been close, but then he left--but not that he was actually you-know-who.

And the pitchforks--really, writers? Has Angelique really learned nothing new during her time in hell?

Well, MT, I guess I'm not a soap romance fan, not then or now.

DS Wiki says that Lara Parker does the opening voiceover, which makes sense, because she's in this ep. and Lisa Richards isn't.

Megan is so angry that she actually grabs Nick by the lapels, vowing to kill him--and she probably could, since she's at least as tall as he is. Nicholas is almost amazed at Megan. In a deadly quiet voice, he tells her, Take your hands off me. Megan suddenly realizes she’s made a big mistake. Never threaten me again, Nicholas warns her, still in the same quiet voice. [Apparently the elementals are in sympathy, because the fountain gradually winds down over the course of the scene.] Nick tells Megan--rather unwisely--that his, um, superiors have given him a second chance. He reminds her rather pointedly that Jeb is the only indispensable individual in his plot. Why the Forces of Darkness and Evil find Collinsport so attractive is beyond me--but then, that's we we have the show.

Barn bites Megan, who instantly transfers her loyalty from Jeb to him and rats on Sky Rumson.

Angelique has complied with her husband’s wishes and is indeed looking her best. She is now wearing a long black satin gown that sets off her piled-up blond hair. Sky tells her that their impending visitor is responsible for all of his (Sky's) success. She goes upstairs to wait so she can make a big entrance.

Barn bats himself straight to Angelique's room. Sounding a bit like Millicent, Angelique squeaks that if anyone sees him, she'll be ruined. In my present state, I should be able to get out without being seen, Barnabas answers with a strange, ironic glint in his eyes. What are you talking about? she asks. You, of all people, can see what has happened to me, he replies quietly. She looks at him for a long moment. As she begins to understand, her face is filled with genuine shock and sadness. How and why did it happen? she asks sorrowfully. Still smiling faintly, Barnabas replies, It happened the same way it did a long time ago. Jeb found out about me--from Sky. Angelique is completely stunned. I can’t believe that Sky is a Leviathan! she exclaims. He has been one for years, Barnabas replies.

Suddenly Sky calls to Angelique. Barn hides while Sky gives Angelique a present--and the teeny tiny head of the Apollo Belevedere makes its debut on the show. Angelique is deeply touched. The doorbell rings downstairs, and Sky rushes out with almost childlike eagerness to greet his visitor. You really love him, don’t you? Barnabas marvels. Angelique explains, Sky remembered the statuette even though I only casually mentioned that I liked it. Do you expect me to believe that this is not a good man? Please investigate what I’ve told you, Barnabas implores her. I don’t think there’s any reason to, she replies angrily. I think you should leave now.

Sky and Nick are talking when Angelique comes downstairs. She starts to greet her husband's guest--and is struck speechless when she sees who it is.

Nick enjoys baiting Angelique even more than he did in 1968. These two go back a long, long, long way.

Alone with her husband, Angelique lets him have it about being a Leviathan. He tries to recruit her, but she screams at him and runs out.

Nicholas returns. I heard every word, he tells Sky. Did Angelique know you from somewhere else? Sky asks. Yes, she does, Nicholas replies succinctly, but there is no time to tell you now where it was or when. We are faced with an emergency. I think Angelique must become one of us immediately, Sky says. She never can, Nicholas replies. It is impossible, and because of the way she now feels about you she can only be our enemy--our very dangerous enemy. You have a decision to make now: Angelique or the Leviathans. Sky refuses to decide, so Nicholas decides for him. He gets a small torch and lights it at the fireplace. He tells Sky, Just as the Leviathans made your position and way of life possible, they can just as easily undo it. You can either hold on to Angelique and destroy your empire, or she must be destroyed. He holds out the torch to Sky: There is no other way. You must destroy her. We will never make a stronger test of your loyalty. I strongly advise you not to fail it. Sky pauses a moment to compose himself--then takes the torch.

Upstairs, Angelique is frantically cramming things into a suitcase when Sky comes in, holding the torch. Oh, Sky! she screams. What are you going to do? I wanted it to work, he replies. I really wanted you to be with me, and I’m sorry that you can’t. Goodbye, Angelique! He moves into the room, holding the torch toward her as she screams....

Yes, talk of the devil and he appears! I've always enjoyed Nicholas's blasphemous declaration, and I also hope it generated some letters.  [ghost_cheesy]

At least now we have some kind of rationale for Barnabas's recruitment by the Leviathans, if Nicholas (supposedly) had planned it that way all along.

Nicholas is actually wearing a blue coat, a blue suit, and a blue tie this time around. His meteorological displeasure continues as he takes Jeb to task. And great bit when he reappears at the front door, blocking Jeb's escape. MT, was that all filmed in a single shot? Or did they have a break so that HAA didn't have to run around to the front door? Apparently it takes Nick only moments to consecrate the room. Jeb slinks in, and Nick and Bruno share a laugh at his expense.

While in the room, Jeb actually resists the urge to kill Bruno. Now he doesn't want to be the Leviathan Supreme Being.

Carolyn's dream now points her to her father's grave. She insists to Jeb, If we went to my father’s grave tonight, the coffin would be empty. Carolyn notices that Jeb is very frightened, but he won’t explain. Carolyn holds him tight as she says, I’m sure there is some truth to the dream. But Jeb is rescued by Megan, who comes bearing a glass of water and a sleeping pill. Jeb urges Carolyn to take the pill, since she is so upset. She takes it and apologizes to Jeb for upsetting him. Don’t worry anymore, he tells her as he strokes her hair and kisses her. Megan turns away, her face a mask of jealously. (Jeb hits the table in moving away from Carolyn.) Carolyn goes upstairs, and Megan’s expression changes to satisfaction when Jeb softly tells her to meet him at Paul Stoddard’s grave as soon as Carolyn is asleep.

At the cemetery, Jeb is digging up Paul’s grave. (His dates are 1920-1970.)

Megan makes sure Carolyn is on the verge of sleep and leaves. She's so desperate for time alone with Jeb that even meeting him at the cemetery seems like a good idea.

By the time Megan arrives at the cemetery, Jeb has opened the grave and singlehandedly brought the coffin up to the surface, perhaps using his Leviathan strength in this deserted place. You’re just being hysterical, Megan tells Jeb. Paul will be inside. He is working against me! Jeb says, pointing to the coffin. Of course he is, Megan says bluntly. It is your own fault because you killed him. Then she gives it up: We shouldn’t fight, she says. It’s all ridiculous. We will see, Jeb answers. Jeb opens the coffin, and he and Megan are horrified to see Paul Stoddard grinning up at them evilly. He’s going to tell Carolyn about me! Jeb says, still upset. We must burn the body! Paul continues to grin up at them........

[Dennis Patrick had gone to make the movie _Joe_, so a photograph of him was used to show him as Paul dead in the coffin. In any event, this is unfortunately his last appearance on the show. I remember getting quite a jolt on seeing his grinning face!]

I've always thought that when Barnabas says, "Get your coat, Julia, we're going" and he and Julia visit Dr. Lang, he (Barn) is on his way. But when he rescures her from Tom Vampire Jennings, we can see that he really has started to care in spite of himself--and only because Willie corners him.

How did you get out? Megan asks. I can move very fast when I have to, Jeb replies. I was out the [boarded-up!] window and away before anyone knew. When I was out in the country and alone, I changed back into Jeb and walked to Collinwood. [EVEN THOUGH he supposedly could change back to Jeb ONLY in the room!] Elizabeth goes to arrange some rooms (yes, rooms) for him at Collinwood.

JB does have to do some weird stuff to act loyal to Jeb and still be the Mistress of Collinwood.

Megan is getting jealous of anyone else Jeb pays attention to. But she tells him that she saw Barn in the crowd watching the fire.

Julia has just finished giving Barn his first injection when Jeb appears and says he knows Barn set the fire. Barn shouts defiance, then Julia returns after stowing her medical bag. She is just as shocked as Barn that Jeb appears hale and well. Still the master of his own house at least, Barnabas says pointedly that Mr. Hawkes is just leaving. But Jeb has the last laugh this night. Of course, he jeers, it’s almost dawn. He keeps laughing as he walks out.

Julia is almost overwhelmed with disappointment, but Barn notes with gentle concern that she's tired.

We haven't seen JK since Barn killed Carl Collins in 1897.

In the morning, Elizabeth meets Megan in the foyer as she prepares to visit Philip. Megan says, I’m worried about what people will say about my staying at Collinwood. We know the real circumstances, Elizabeth says firmly. Then she turns to practical matters. I want to show Jeb the carriage house as a new home, she says. I know Carolyn will like it--they seem to really care for each other, don’t they? she remarks dotingly. But Megan’s maternal obsession with Jeb has warped into quite another kind of obsession altogether. She has done a slow jealous burn. Yes, they seem to really care for each other! she spits and storms out of the house, leaving the oblivious Elizabeth puzzled at why her good friend and ally should not share in her daughter’s happiness.

Megan acts supportive with Philip, who tells her he confessed to protect her. He wants to move against Jeb, and Megan pretends to go along by saying that they have to pretend they're still loyal. If we’re loyal, Philip wonders, will Jeb confess to the murders? Jeb will find someone to take your place, Megan replies. Is that all I can hope for? Philip says, horrified. For some other innocent person to die in my place? I’m glad the shop burned down, he declares. I was beginning to hate it and everything it stood for. If I can get out of jail, we’ll go someplace new and start all over. Yes, darling, yes, Megan lies, looking right into his eyes. One good thing has come out of all this horror, Philip says. I have got you back again. He holds her tight, but as she turns her face away we can see her distaste at his touch.

Welcome, carriage house set! It does have a rustic charm and a free-standing fireplace. Elizabeth gushes that there's even a room where Jeb can change into his "higher" form. She wants to consult Barn, but Jeb rather sharply orders her not to. Jeb says flatly, Barnabas is no longer your leader. You are not to consult him on anything. Should I keep him out of Collinwood as well? Elizabeth asks, willing to go the extra mile for her leader. Not yet, Jeb answers. I want Barnabas to be an outsider, but not so far outside that he can’t see what’s happening.

At the Old House, Julia is asleep in one of the chairs by the fire when the sound of the basement door awakens her. She stands up to greet Barnabas with a smile. Though his face is still haggard, it is aglow with gratitude and even tenderness as he draws close. One more day safely past--thanks to you, he murmurs. I’m frightened, Julia says. Don’t be, he says still gently as he heads for the door. Don’t go out, she says. He tells her, No matter what happens, there is one more thing I must do.

Megan's weirdness continues: Megan returns to Collinwood. She observes to Elizabeth, How strange it must look that the woman whose husband was killed and the woman whose husband confessed to the killing are living under the same roof. Apparently in on the conspiracy, Elizabeth asks her, Will Philip stick to his confession? There’s no danger as long as Philip feels sorry for me, Megan replies scornfully. Are you feeling sorry for yourself? Elizabeth asks her. I have never been happier in my life, Megan declares.

In his cell at the jail, Philip hears the squeaking sounds of a bat. The next moment, Barnabas is in the cell with him. Barnabas warns him to be quiet and offers no explanation of his arrival. No one knows I’m here, he says, and that’s how I want it to stay. Philip observes, There is something different about you, something strange. It frightens me. You mustn’t be frightened, Philip, Barnabas says, his face full of sadness. I’m here to help you. You’re accused of three murders you didn’t commit. And they are going to hang me for them, Philip says, but if I try to get out Megan will die. Jeb has made it clear that she is his hostage for my continuing good behavior. Megan is not his hostage, Barnabas says bluntly, she is his slave, his worshiper. At last Philip realizes the depth of his plight. I don’t know what to believe anymore, he says. I really thought I would be able to steal the box, and I almost did. Barnabas says, I understand that you had no more power over events than I did after Jeb changed me into a “vile creature of the night.” Philip backs away in fear. Don’t draw away from me, please, Barnabas almost pleads. I will not harm you. Philip tells him, I didn’t betray you to Jeb. He already knew all about you. Someone else betrayed you.

Megan is at the carriage house. She and Jeb are both laughing as she fills him in on her visit to her luckless husband. She declares, I wouldn’t go anywhere with that weak, spineless-- You loved him once, Jeb remarks. I thought I did, Megan replies--until my eyes were opened to the truth. I’m glad too that the shop burned down, because it kept reminding me of him. Here nothing does, and it’s perfect. She adds enthusiastically, I’ll consecrate the back room immediately so that you can change into your higher form. Jeb is strangely reluctant to let her consecrate the room. After some hemming and hawing, he finally says, I don’t want the room. I see no reason why I can’t remain in this form. You are what’s in that room, Megan reminds him. Jeb is only what the world sees. But the world seems to like it fine, Jeb smiles. You mean Carolyn Stoddard seems to like it fine, Megan says viciously. Jeb finally realizes what’s going on. What if she does? he asks with genuine male obtuseness. Megan rages, I didn’t give up everything in my life so that someone like Carolyn Stoddard could have another date to take her to dinner! Jeb turns away to hide his enjoyment of her jealousy. If you want Carolyn, it must be in the way the Book demands, the way the Leviathans demand, Megan finishes. Would you be jealous otherwise? Jeb asks. I’ve given up a lot for you, she says again. Jeb says, I’m tired of your thinking of me as Alexander or Michael, as someone you have a special hold over. Things have changed, things between us are different. That’s not true, Megan insists, mistaking his meaning. Jeb clears things up by grabbing her, pulling her close and kissing her hard. After an instant’s surprise, Megan wraps her arms around him and kisses him back even harder. He pushes her away and smiles, Aren’t they?

Now, we might suppose this is not technically incest, since Megan is only Jeb’s foster mother. But someone somewhere is quite displeased, as the two are startled by a loud thunderclap and lightning. The thunder continues to boom as all the lights go out, and they look around nervously. When the front door blows open, Megan rushes away from it. Jeb dashes to the door and stares outside, then steps back and grabs Megan’s arm as they hear slow footsteps approaching. Who is it? Megan demands, terrified. Jeb, who did you make angry?.....

Jeb gloats over his fallen and now openly declared enemy. He leaves, taking the Leviathan box with him. I guess the Bat of Hell just flies away?

But as we will see, Jeb’s spiteful punishment has restored all of Barnabas’s supernatural powers. That and the knowledge that Josette is not a prisoner of the Leviathans have left him with nothing to lose.

Eventually Barnabas revives. But he is no longer human. His face is drained of color. His eyes are set deep in his skull. His face is sunken; his high cheekbones and jawline are brutally outlined. His hair is white at the temples. He realizes that everything is different. He touches his neck, and his hand comes away bloody. His howl conveys boundless grief and agony; his fangs gleam in the moonlight.

[Why would the Leviathans be able to re-vamp Barnabas? The writers must have forgotten about Adam, or else the Bat of Hell is an Adam-resistant strain.]

Jeb returns to the shop, where Quentin is waiting outside. Quentin accuses Jeb of killing Barnabas, but Jeb says he didn't. They go at it again, but Jeb pulls a knife--so I suppose he thinks he can kill Quentin. In any case, Quentin retires from the field. Why did Quentin let Jeb go? His portrait would have protected him! Or does he not want to give another secret away to Jeb?

Quentin returns to the Old House and tells Julia everything. Julia realizes from Jeb's words that Barnabas isn't dead--but that Jeb's revenge has taken a terrible form. Remembering Barn in 1897, Quentin guesses a moment later. Julia sobs, brokenhearted, as Quentin tries to comfort her. They figure that Barnabas must be at the Leviathan cairn and set off.

But Barnabas is at Collinwood, staring up at Maggie's window. It's all he can do to keep himself from biting her. How can I do this to Maggie? he wonders. One hour ago, I would have killed anyone who tried to harm her. Yes, harm her--that is what I would be doing. I must not. No! He hurries away.

WELCOME, ELIZABETH EIS! Nelle Gunston, a young woman from the South, arrives at the Blue Whale, where Barn probably was looking for a victim. Instead he has found another Leviathan disciple eager to meet "Jabez." (Nelle Gunston is from Virginia, making her the southernmost DS character; Suki Forbes, the previous record holder, was from Maryland.) Nelle describes her dreary life before her conversion: Just getting up and going to work, she says, listening to Mama and Papa and wanting to get out so bad. Then in Richmond I met a man named Bruno. He gave me the pendant. Everything has been different since I met Bruno. I can’t wait to meet our leader and serve him, she gushes. Julia and Quentin arrive and start worrying the moment they see the situation. Barnabas introduces them to Nelle and says they are having a discussion. Julia and Quentin go to the bar for a drink, and Julia notices Nelle’s pendant. Barnabas looks different somehow, Quentin notes. Has Jeb put a spell on Barnabas to reconvert him? Julia wonders.

Barn tells Nelle, Once you open the sacred box and becomes a true Leviathan, “our” leader will make all kinds of demands for your obedience. You will be required to steal. I wouldn’t be scared, Nelle declares. To go against your own friends--even to kill! Barnabas continues. Even that, Nelle assures him fervently. Please, take me to the shop right away! I have to see our leader too, Barnabas replies, but I don’t know where he is. If you’ll will come with me.… I prefer meeting a gentleman like you to meeting Bruno, she replies loftily. It’s better with you, she declares, and I’m not a girl that would say it if she didn’t think it. Still at the bar, Quentin and Julia watch their departure. Julia wonders what has happened to Barnabas, who uncharacteristically didn’t even stop to say goodbye.

Barn takes Nelle to the Old House, but when Jeb doesn't immediately appear, she becomes suspicious. Where is your ring? she asks. (Barn has never worn a Leviathan ring, only his own black onyx one.) Barnabas says he doesn't need to, since he brought the box to Philip and Megan Todd himself. I’m not sure I believe you, she says. I don’t have to prove anything to you, he retorts. When Barnabas tells her she is attractive, Nelle decides that Jeb isn’t coming. What did Bruno say to you? Barnabas asks. Rather crossly she says, A Mr. Strack brought him in--that’s all I know. He offers her a drink, but she pulls a knife on him. He stares her into putting the knife down. You’re not one of us! Nelle finally realizes. You’re right, Barnabas replies with a deadly smile. I will show you what I am. He bares his fangs. Nelle shrieks and tries to get away but he pulls her back almost negligently. You are a Leviathan and you will do anything, he says, even try to kill! The Leviathans will avenge me, I swear it! she screams. No, they won’t! Barnabas replies, and she shrieks as he sinks his fangs into her neck.

Quentin and Julia arrive at the Old House--only to find Barnabas standing over Nelle's body. He is too ashamed to look at them. Julia finds that Barn strangled Nelle with her own scarf. He tells the others that Nelle was going to join the Leviathans. What did he do to you? Quentin demands sharply. Julia pulls the scarf aside and cries out when she finds the bite marks on Nelle’s neck. (Presumably he strangled her after biting her so that she wouldn't rise as a vampire.) His dreadful shame exposed, devoured with remorse and self-loathing, Barnabas says, He’s turned me into... he’s turned me into.... He can’t make himself say it. He tries to leave but the others stop him. Please stay with us, Julia begs him. They found out that I am a traitor, Barnabas tells them, so this is my punishment. Julia is horrified but declares stoutly, I will start the injections again immediately, tonight. But Barnabas's only thought is to destroy Jeb's Room, and he rushes out before the others can stop him. Quentin wants to leave Nelle's body at the shop, but Julia says it would only implicate Barnabas. He is so vulnerable now, Quentin, she frets. Soon it will be dawn. We must find a new hiding place for Barnabas and protect him during the day because that’s when they will try to destroy him. If he goes on fighting them, yes, Quentin agrees. He will, Julia assures him, even now able to summon up a faint smile of pride. I must call Willie Loomis back to Collinwood to help us. How can we win now, with Barnabas unable to function during the day? Quentin wonders. He may be unable to function, Julia agrees then adds grimly, but I think that soon Jeb Hawkes is going to learn that he has made the biggest mistake of his life tonight.

At the shop, Jeb (back in the gold sweater) is on the phone with Megan, who is at the police station. She tells him that the police are questioning Philip again and won’t let her see him. Apparently she decides to wait till they do. After he hangs up, Jeb tucks the Leviathan box under his right arm and lefthandedly turns off the hanging Tiffany-style lamps. Barnabas watches from outside as Jeb goes upstairs. Jeb goes to his room and locks the door; a moment later, the breathing starts up--the slow breathing of an immense creature at rest. Barnabas quietly enters the shop and goes upstairs. He listens to the breathing for a moment, then goes back down. From the back room he gets a can of gasoline, which he sprinkles liberally all around the shop. He lights a match and drops it onto the gasoline. As the shop goes up in flames, he declares, May that breathing never come from any room again!..........

Just that one of their rituals might have conjured up an earlier incarnation of Jeb.

What an awful, awful thought!  [ghost_shocked]

Only on DS would we have dueling timelines. But I think you're right about your spoiler, Joey.
