Yea, Harry would have been a whole lot smarter in going to the police and bringing them back with him to arrest Adam.

Cassandra really must be a witch.  She was able to re-listen to Dr. Lang's portion of the tape without re-winding it.

I like the dramatic irony in the Maggie/Nicholas scene.  Here's Maggie describing "good" Prof. Stokes in near-villainous terms to the man who really IS a villain, Nicholas.

The hand notwithstanding, I really loved that scene between the two.  The dialogue was sharp - as is often the case with DS - and the acting sublime.  Cassandra and Nicholas make great foils for one another.

Alexandra Moltke was my first-ever TV crush, so I guess I'll have to go with her.  Heck, even her name is sexy...Alexandra Moltke..Alexandra Moltke..Alexandra Moltke... [ghost_nowink]

I love this episode.  John Karlen is so poignant in his scene with Maggie, and that conversation between Julia and Cassandra!  All I can say is wow.  Grayson Hall really pulled out the stops and made us care for Julia.

One question though:  Wouldn't Julia know that Barnabas would be conscious every night in that coffin, presumably for all eternity?  Ism't that a horrifically cruel fate to consign someone to, especially someone you love.  I've often wondered about that in regards to Joshua as well, chaining his son up in a coffin so he could wake up every night trapped in there with no hope of getting out.  That seems somehow a much more hideous fate than a stake to the heart.

Has everybody in the story suddenly forgotten Roger?  I mean it isn't as if Cassandra were free to marry whomsoever she pleases, especially the cousin of the man she's already married to.

I love how the men at Collinwood are always dressed in three-piece suits no matter what time of day it is.  Only the poor working-class stiffs like Joe and Willie get to wear casual clothes.

I like how DS is able to make even its most notorious villains sympathetic at times.  That is certainly the case with Cassandra in this episode.  Who doesn't feel at least a little sorry for her when Nicholas is chewing her out for being in love with Barnabas?

I guess Collinwood doesn't have a law against toting a fully loaded rifle through the city streets.

Does anyone else notice that Prof. Stokes' door opens outward rather than inward? That seems very odd to me.

Let us take this moment to acknowledge Humbert Allen Astredo's brilliance as an actor.  He was so wonderful in this episode - urbane, witty, manipulative, superior and unnerving all at the same time.  Checking his bio on imdb.com, I'm stunned at how little work he did apart from DS (though, I'm sure he was very active on the stage - or at least I hope so).  What a treasure!

I liked the scene between Vicky and Maggie.  It was subtly written and nicely played.  I wish they'd had more such scenes together.

I also really liked the way Vicky had her hair pulled back from her face in the scene with Jeff.  She looked very pretty.

I loved Vickie's plaintive comment early on in the episode, "So many strange things have happened here tonight."  Yea, not like all those other nights at Collinwood where absolutely nothing out of the ordinary ever happens.

I also find it strange that Nicholas would call attention to how the colors in the portrait are now suddenly miraculously restored to their former brilliance just as Cassandra has returned to Collinwood.  One would think he would do everything in his power to downplay that inexlplicable event, not point it out to everyone.

It does strike me as a trifle odd that Vicky would sleep with the portrait looking at her, considering that it resembles the woman who had her tried for witchcraft.  How freaky is that? It seems more likely she would do with it what that little boy in "Poltergeist" does with the creepy toy clown in his room - which is throw a blanket over it.

I really liked the angle the camera took when Vicky was walking down the stairs to the door.  It showed how really nice a set the foyer is.

Gosh, we never got to see what the present was that Jeff brought back for Vicky (and apparently neither did she).   [ghost_sad]

That Prof. Stokes sure has become the go-to guy in times of crisis, hasn't he?  He might as well just move into the room next to Julia's. It would cut back on a lot of unnecessary trips.

I wonder who that guy was who wandered into the frame when Willie was alone in the basement.   That turned into rather an unintentionally  spooky moment in and of itself.

Nicholas Blair is one of my all-time favorite characters on DS!  How is it that Prof. Stokes can be so insufferably elitist and egotistical (referring to others as inferior to himself), yet so endearing at the same time?  Now THAT'S acting!

Did anyone else notice the disembodied arms in this episode?  One was when Roger was explaining how he kept expecting Cassandra to come through the door, and right at that moment an arm is visible in the doorway behind Barnabas and Julia.  Then, again, an arm appears momentarily in the closing credits.   Maybe it was Count Petofi's missing appendage making an early appearance, scoping out the place as it were.   [ghost_wink]

Also, I noticed that Prof. Stokes and Nicholas Blair were not included in the credits at the end.

Current Talk '08 I / Is Julia the Ultimate Squator and Freeloader?
« on: June 25, 2008, 05:25:59 AM »
When Julia first moved into Collinwood, she at least had a false cover - that she was writing a history of the Collins family - as a justification.  But once that cover was blown (after the seance), what reason did she still have for staying?  And, why didn't Roger, in particular (who never took too kindly to outsiders in the first place) not eventually throw her out on her keester?   I mean it takes a lot of chutzpah for someone to just worm her way into a permanent place in the area's most lavish and impressive mansion with, one assumes, free board as well (unless she was slipping Mrs. Johnson a weekly stipend for her meals).  Maybe they kept her around for all those sedatives she was so generous about passing around.   [ghost_wink]

"The devil has painted your hair."  What a great image. One of my favorite DS lines ever!
