I thought it was kind of nice that Julia felt sorry for James and Amanda, even though she completely lost it when she thought one of the bodies moved and Brutus locked the Iron Door. And yes, I'm sure everyone in the house has had Locked Room nightmares, probably starting in utero. Julia and Justin's own father--or maybe an uncle--must have had to spend a night in the room. What dreadful lives the Collinses must have lived, knowing that one of their generation would have to go into the room, yet also being obliged to reproduce, knowing that one of their own children would have to make the sacrifice for the next generation to spare the rest of them, or at least enough of them to keep the family business going, and so on and so on....

I've always thought Catherine wakes up screaming right about the time that Julia thinks one of the bodies moved, but maybe that's just my imagination working overtime.

Everyone underestimates Melanie's real strength of character, kindness and unselfishness--I liked her heart-to-heart with Catherine. If Melanie and Kendrick can survive long enough to get married, they should be very happy together. Julia did give her good advice under the circumstances, but I had to cheer when Melanie actually got angry with her!

And I agree that Morgan seems to be one of those people who want something all the more if they think somebody else has more of a hold over it than they do. Bramwell may be a very, very rough diamond indeed, but thinking of Catherine as a possession is not one of his faults. Perhaps in another time and place, the story might have explored the possibility--which only just now occurred to me--that Morgan's real attraction was to Bramwell--? I suppose there's some slash fiction about that somewhere.

More fun with mad Gabriel. But Catherine is a good enough negotiator that she kept him from killing her. Loved the comment about Daddy Brutus's knife.  [ghost_grin]  Too bad he has only one, and that Gabriel has it instead of Melanie. Maybe Brutus has been giving Gabriel mental instructions all along, but with Gabriel actually about to leave the house (and Brutus's sphere of influence?), Brutus probably figured he had to put the fear of-- well, of Brutus--into Gabriel.

Anytime! I hope I don't come across like a pompous twit, but I do a lot of work-related fact checking so at least I come by it honestly.

I'm pretty sure they had eye specialists at least, well before 1840. They were already attempting cataract operations, but without notable success. In RT, the same eye surgeon operated on J. S. Bach (died 1750) and Georg Frideric Handel (died 1757) and failed, leaving them both blind. But of course in PT anything is possible, even a doctor who knows Daphne is dying but not what from. The late Dr. Harridge would have been horrified at the inadequate medical care his successor is providing for his daughter.

According to Webster's Online, the word coma made its English-language debut in 1646.

And speaking of music, yes, I believe that is a clarinet solo under Catherine's speech--and very nicely done too.

Maybe Gabriel is temporarily not in "kill every Collins" mode and just wanted to get out of the North Tower. For him that would be relatively sane.

Lydia, I stand corrected. Flora's outings have been even more circumscribed than I thought if she didn't even walk down the hill to the Old House every so often.

It was probably very smart of the ex-con Quentin not to tell Gabriel about any knife fights he had while he was in jail.  [ghost_rolleyes]

So we start all over again once the current cycle is over? I'm delighted, because I didn't sign on to this board until close to the end of RT 1840/1841. :)

Not quite KJ's final appearance, right?-- although she's wonderful, and she does have a lovely nightgown. At least Bramwell and Catherine have the grace to be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

Melanie is getting closer and closer to finding out the truth about her parents. You go, girl!

Morgan and Julia brave the Locked Room. Although it's broad daylight, I was scared half to death when I saw this part for the first time. What could cause the stalwart Julia to recoil in absolute horror?

Magnus, what interested me was that there was no mention of this being parallel time.  And I'll be listening for that.

If I remember, they actually stopped mentioning parallel time as the show drew to its close.

So why doesn't PT Flora leave the house?
Were we told that?  I didn't hear it.  If it's the case, then perhaps Flora just didn't want to have to deal with anybody looking at her and wondering about her husband and all the rumors about the Collinses.

When Julia sees Flora return from visiting Daphne and hang up her cloak, she actually tells her, You haven’t left the house in years! But she's forgetting Justin’s funeral and Flora’s nearly fatal visit to the gazebo to meet Gabriel. When Flora leaves the house, bad things tend to happen, so no wonder she stays at home. But I suppose you're right, too, that the Mistress of Collinwood wouldn't want to be the subject of stares and gossip by the lowly villagers.

Interesting thought about Morgan getting Quentin's lines after DS had to get his appendix out. It would have been more plausible for the ex-con Quentin to tell Gabriel he understood about being locked up and bored.

Too bad Julia doesn't have superpowers--or eyes in the back of her head!

GH's voiceover tells us we're in 1841--when did that happen? Julia is very busy in this episode!

Julia interrupts Carrie's vision, but bravo to Melanie for developing even more spine!

So why doesn't PT Flora leave the house? Did she also bury a body in the basement? That might have been an interesting plot line. I love what she tells Julia when she comes back from the Old House: I felt it was My Duty to go to the Old House and see Daphne. After all, she is now a member of The Family. (I can't help it, she talks in capital letters!)

It's not very nice of Julia to threaten Carrie with blackmail. The identity of Melanie's mother must be one heck of a secret.

Always a treat to see Pennock doing insane Gabriel. Poor Flora will never know how close history came to repeating itself. In PT, apparently the Tower Room is called the North Tower. Shades of "A Tale of Two Cities"!

Too tired to comment any further tonight. Over to you, Lydia!

I've started wondering if they intended to do a full-blown 1680 storyline, with another time travel method found for Q or someone to go back there

Wow, MT, you've started my brain spinning! That could have been very cool! And 1680 was mostly unexplored territory in both RT and PT. *sigh*

Very thoughtful comment about the writers, Lydia!

I love Kendrick and Melanie playing detective and hunting for clues in Justin's study. They are very sweet together. If I remember, we will have two more incidents of two people snooping around a third person's room.

Carrie is getting to be quite an expert psychic, isn't she.

Nice bit by JF when Bramwell holds out his arms to the weeping (oy oy oy!) Catherine, then slowly and guiltily lowers them. I think JF does the guilt and remorse thing better than LP, but they are both good. Maybe it's just the script that calls for her to be so weepy. Too bad Daphne couldn't have studied medicine, even as a sort of apprentice to her father. But I guess even in PT 1840, it wouldn't have been allowed.

The lightning speed at which all the threads are being resolved makes me wistful for what might have been.

I always like JF's voiceovers, but I guess I'm in the minority.

It was nice of Julia to defend Catherine and Bramwell against Morgan's accusations, but I'm sure she was doing it mostly for Daphne's sake.

Bramwell's mother is the only woman he actually listens to. It's too bad there wasn't time to really develop the change in his feelings for Daphne. It would have been fun to see Catherine get jealous (again).

As far as I can guess, people rubbed alcohol on a sick person's forehead and wrists to bring a fever down. Alcohol evaporates quickly, so it would have a cooling effect. But I don't say this from personal experience.

Was Amanda's dress really of the period?   I wouldn't know, yet it seems too opulent, at least for Americans then.  It seems like the following century to me too.

It was more or less of the period--not that I'm a costume expert! It is pretty opulent, but I'm sure Brutus would insist on dressing Amanda up if only to show off his own wealth and prestige.

Really though, wasn't Collinwood used because at this point, the Old House set no longer existed?
We will see the Old House several more times.
Brutus kills Constance, all right--he stabs her to death after she goes at him with a handy knife.

I don't know if there's a frame grab with the hypo, but I remember it was particular nasty looking.
