Maybe this episode should be called "The Coffee Cantata." I like a good cup myself, but really.

In the cottage, behind and between Burke and Maggie as they converse, is Sam's sketch of Maggie's mother.

And yes, farewell, Mark Allen. I actually liked him better than the more blustery and less philosophical David Ford, but that's just me.

Burke offers Sam a thousand dollars to paint his portrait. I guess we should multiply that by at least ten to get today's dollar amount.

Ah, the old rotary-dial phones! And the old exchanges YUkon 8 and LExington 2, with words instead of prosaic numbers. Those really take me back.

From these early days on, Carolyn's most striking piece of jewelry is a cameo pendant, which I believe she wears throughout the run of the show.

Despite Burke's excited phone call to his subordinate, it's hard to see that anything is actually happening.

Perhaps he's soaring on
the validation from "knowing" that Burke is now very definitely a guilty man who'll go to prison again now, thus proving Roger's story retroactively...?
Perhaps he's soaring on the combination of pills the doctor gave him--maybe he took them off screen--and the drink he had the moment he walked into Collinwood.

FAREWELL, MAGGIE'S BLOND WIG!

Joe was wearing a light-colored raincoat when he picked Carolyn up earlier. Now he is carrying a dark-colored one. No wonder he's upset.

I have always thought JB looked beautiful in these episodes--a perfect example of an older woman aging far more gracefully on screen than we are used to seeing today.

Roger has taken the painkillers Dr. Reeves gave him. But being a Collins, he has a drink the moment he enters the house.

And so the endless Saga of the Bleeder Valve begins.

Vicki takes the longest time to get dressed in this episode! She is still wearing pajamas, so she hasn't yet been promoted to full heroine status.

Roger drives into town with the reluctant Vicki, apparently forgetting the alcohol and pills he just consumed in the previous episode.

Elizabeth loved her father very much and he died over twenty years ago about the time Vickie was born.  Could there be a connection?  So Roger was probably a minor when his father died, but apparently left him no money or if he did it was gone by the time Liz had to pension him off to Augusta ten years ago.

Another interesting connection with Elizabeth and twenty years ago.

Roger did have money, but at one point
he confesses that he frittered it all away. I think we're meant to infer that that's partly why he came back to Collinwood--he's basically broke
.

Matthew's crash was seventeen years ago.  The way he was talking made it seem more recent.

Hmm. What, if anything, are we supposed to make of that? That would be a year after Elizabeth hired him.

Good point about heating (or not) that vast pile of a house. And about the telephones. In those far-off days, nobody had phones in their bedrooms.

It's pretty clear (to me anyway) that Elizabeth's prime directive has always been her love for Carolyn. She will do ANYTHING to protect her, even at a terrible cost to herself. I think Elizabeth also loves Roger, but if he was away at school they probably aren't all that close. But she's definitely in older sister mode!

Does the Blue Whale have Ladies' Choice? Carolyn asks Burke to dance--how forward of her! She also tells him she'd admire a man who'd knock her over the head and drag her out of Collinwood.

FAREWELL, GEORGE MITCHELL!

Ah, yes, the famous Wilhelm scream! Even though we don't hear it on the show,
there's plenty of screaming to come
.  [ghost_grin]

Maybe it was just that Elizabeth was older and readier to take on the business. If her and Roger's father died fairly young, Roger would have been pretty young too. At one point it's mentioned that he was away at boarding school.

In their first conversation after introducing themselves, "Miss Winters" and "Mr. Haskell" discuss ghosts.

The Petofi box is still on the chest in the hallway, probably with no inkling of its future glory.

When preparing to go out with Joe, Carolyn decides her dress is too long and schoolgirlish and changes to a tighter, shorter, sleeveless dress. Maybe that's what rattled Joe so much that when they arrive at the BW, he's forgotten the umbrella he brought to Collinwood.

The West Wing! The West Wing!!!  [ghost_grin]

We get our first look not only at the cottage, but also at the tea/coffee set that will migrate to many times and places in the future, much like the famous afghans.

Matthew actually eats on camera--and even Vicki takes a bite of a muffin.
