The legend of Saint Elmo is a nice seagoing touch. Also interesting is the fact that Bill was afraid of the water and never learned to swim--a tradition among sailors, who figured it would only postpone the inevitable if they were lost at sea.

It seems that Roger wasted whatever effort (and cash) he put into getting rid of Sheriff Jonas Carter. Sheriff Patterson seems determined not to leave him alone about Bill's death.

We get a little more of Matthew's back story. It turns out he worked for Elizabeth's father (that would be Jamison) in the fleet before going ashore and sweeping the stinking floors in the stinking cannery for stinking decades before Elizabeth rescued him--big dramatic pause here--eighteen years ago.

And a nice little note about Bill: He used to watch the fleet go out every morning, but today was the first time he didn't.

Poor Vicki--I suppose today we would call David's lesson on rivers a teachable moment.

Either Vicki has graduated to heroine status, or Carolyn took her shopping. She's swapped her pajamas for a billowing nightgown, not quite as ornate as Carolyn's, but still. Poor Carolyn--this is probably her first slumber party ever. Vicki's twin bed has miraculously grown into a double in honor of the occasion. The girls get no sleep but manage to scare themselves silly.

Carolyn tells Vicki that her mother never let her swim at the foot of the cliffs because of the undertow. This may be the only time she ever mentions any form of exercise.

Sam has trusted Maggie to find someplace safe for his letter (the hotel safe, in fact) but forces her to swear on her mother's name that she won't read it. I don't have to swear, she replies patiently--I've never lied to you.

If Maggie knew how many times her father has lied to her over the years, she'd probably wish she had a dollar for each time.

Nope, just the sideburns, and they were bad enough.  [ghost_cheesy]

I hope everyone is right about post-production. That makeup looks like inch-thick plaster of paris. Heaven help us if this is any indication of what the rest of the movie will be like. I wasn't very hopeful to start with, and now I'm really pessimistic.

Fun article, although I was a bit confused until I realized that "quaffed fur" should have been "coiffed fur." I was wondering how the werewolf drank fur. So much for Spell Check.

Heaven forbid (as it were) on both counts! Barnabas was nothing if not a thoroughgoing rationalist and a true child of the Enlightenment--even if it didn't save him from getting cursed.

I love the outfit Elizabeth wears when she goes to visit Matthew (who is just about to go to bed): a cape-like coat with armholes and a scarf tied over her hair, very much ala Audrey Hepburn in Charade.

Sadly for her, Ned Calder has called back and refuses to return to Collinwood. I suppose the writers were holding him in reserve for some future return. Too bad.

Good zingers, but this was a very repetitious episode. Even Elizabeth doesn't seem inclined to believe the girls saw what they did.

And speaking of inclines, according to my notes, when Matthew is walking down the cliff path, flashlight in hand, it certainly doesn't appear quite so steep as it does from the top.

It's lovely to know he was so creative. And I always thought there was a lot more to him that Carolyn ever realized--until too late, of course.

The treacherous Nathan Forbes was one of the best parts of the 1795 story line. I know he was in other soaps, but I don't know if he got such plum roles on those.

The frame grab in the Robervations for this episode makes it look as if "DEATH" is written in lipstick of some light shade. Nothing will dissuade me from believing David did it--it seems too childish for three widows, just not their style.

I'm betting that Elizabeth paid for those fancy "sweet sixteen" birthday presents.

Roger is probably well past the point where he would notice such trifles.
