If you read Angelique's Descent by Lara Parker, she spends a fair amount of time describing the sugar plantations on Martinique (at least I think it was sugar, my memory is getting bad), where the DuPres' made their fortune, and even has Barnabas being in the Navy because that's pretty much required for anyone to be in a shipbuilding family.

I thought that was a pretty good storyline too, except towards the end the writers seemed to lose interest in it.  The conclusion deserved a bit more emphasis than it got, IMO.

I sincerely hope that their wrestling show the other night produced the lowest ratings of any show since the inception of their network, and volumes of hate mail that it'll take them until the middle of August to sort through.  But would even that be enough to penetrate their skulls?  Probably not.

Stokes:  "Come now Julia, as somewhat of a student of the human condition, I can tell you with certainty that the surest way to get Barnabas to notice you is to make him jealous.  And I'm right here, ready and willing."

Julia:  "I've...uh uh uh...got a headache."

Same could be said of my other interests, like Babylon 5,

Another Babylon 5 fan!  I watched every epsiode of that show about 4 or 5 times, now it's been a few years since it's been on and I'm getting serious withdrawals - more DVD's to buy  ;D

As far as the secondary characters on Dark Shadows, I think I get maybe a little bored with the regulars and some interesting secondary characters are just what the doctor ordered to keep it interesting.  I especially enjoy some of the timelines where we don't see much of the regulars and other folks get to take center stage.  Nothing wrong with the main characters, I love 'em a lot, but still, a little change now and then is a good thing.

Tony:  "Hmmm, glad I'm a defense attorney and not a prosecutor like that guy!  Still, I feel oddly uncomfortable..."

That actually wasn't too bad for a Sci-Fi Channel origianl production.  Believe it or not, most of them are MUCH worse  ;D

For me it's mostly about the plot.  I can really like any charcter if they're at the heart of an interesting plot.  Or I can not really care for them much if they're in an uninteresting plot.  I love Angelique, but never cared for her much as Cassandra.  Barnabas is great, but if the story isn't interesting, he isn't either.  I even liked Adam in a few scenes, here and there.  A couple of exceptions are Nicolas Blair and Professor Stokes, they're almost always interesting.

« on: May 24, 2006, 04:33:54 PM »
The 1970 episodes may look really odd in B&W, but there were a couple of kinescope episodes back in 1795 that I thought added a certain extra "scariness" to the ep's, so I guess it all balances out.  Personally, just like the flubbed lines and often less-than-perfect video quality, it just reminds you that you're watching an old show, and really adds to the charm.  Not only does it take you out of your day-to-day life with the drama, but even takes you to a different time all together.

Sort of like my Battlestar Galactica DVD's;  I remember watching that show sitting on the floor of my Grandma's house in town (we didn't get that channel at our house).  It's all part of the experience.

Mrs. J:  "Yes, I've won the lotto!  No more cooking and cleaning and looking after those awul kids!  And you, Doctor, Hah!  I'd tell you what you could do too if I wasn't such a a lady!"

I've always admired her excellent acting ability.  She was superb in just about every role she played, no matter if it was the poor unappreciated housekeeper or the detestable Abigail or even Minerva Trask.  She brought a real depth and believability to any character she portrayed.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: Favorite and Least Favorite Child
« on: May 24, 2006, 03:34:27 PM »
Well, as usual, I'll go against the grain and say my least favorite is David.  I didn't mind him too much until Quentin began haunting Collinwood, and I guess David was supposed to be "posessed", but to me he didn't act posessed at all, he just acted like an utterly intolerable brat.

Most favorite would be the girl who was involved in that whole Rose Cottage thing.  I can't remember her name (probably the one everybody hates  ;D )  I haven't seen that storyline in years, but I remember her being fairly likable.

Personally, they could have left all the children out of the show and I would have been one happy camper.

I remember that show.  I had totally fallen for Fallon  ;D  Have to check out KLS sometime.  Ah, another DVD set on the wishlist...

Roger:  "Well, I admit that David can be a bit mischievious at times, but I hardly think having him 'put down' is a suitable punishment!"
