I like what you say about Carolyn, MT, and I entirely agree. She has left the frugging, spoiled willful teenager whom Joe watched in dismay at the BW far, far behind her. Her actions in the future will show how true this is. What a shame no one--not even her mother--thinks of her as the future Mistress of Collinwood. One has to wonder why David was the designated heir.

I also liked Dr. Guthrie--he represented a widening of the boundaries of the claustrophobic Collins universe.

After Dr. Guthrie solemnly promises not to be too scared, David grants him the privilege of a guided tour of the Old House. Finally David mentions Bill Malloy ("He's scary!) and Josette ("She's sad"). Josette has thrown in everything but the kitchen sink in her efforts to warn David. Has she finally succeeded this time?

I think we're supposed to be persuaded that Vicki has seen beneath David's exterior and knows there's a scared little kid way, deep down.

My bet would be that Elizabeth signed the papers putting Carolyn in charge some time ago. She was probably all too aware of Roger's unsuitability. Sure, she probably hoped that Joe would provide a steadying hand, but she was probably also aware of Carolyn's deep loyalty to the family--which we are now beginning to see but which I suspect was always latent. And Carolyn was loyal to her personally, probably far more than Roger was, since he spent so much time away from home--first at school when he was a boy, and until a short time ago in Augusta.

Carolyn is next of kin, even more so than Roger. And we're in the Collinwood Universe, so legal age doesn't always necesssarily apply.

In his usual charming manner, Roger immediately asks Dr. Guthrie, What are you a doctor of? And what are you doing here anyway?

MT, I can see why you're cross about the writers' mixing ESP and the supernatural, but maybe ESP is part of Laura's bag of tricks.

Frank first mentions Peter Guthrie of Dartmouth College in far-off New Hampshire, our first outside expert.

Yes, that's the same Dr. Reeves who treated Roger after his car accident.

I liked how Carolyn is slowly coming around to caring for-- David! Roger wants Elizabeth to be taken to Boston for treatment. Carolyn takes Roger to task for wanting to get a divorce and get rid of David while her mother is gone.

When Laura appears (in the normal manner) in the drawing room, Roger tells her, As long as Liz can speak, she can still give orders. That may not be a problem, Laura replies calmly. The next thing we know, poor Elizabeth is lying in bed, her eyes glazed over, and she can't speak. Way to go, Roger!

Although I'm sure Laura had some help from that afghan....

I've always thought that the Collins universe is dotted with small private cemeteries, one for each of the great families. Maybe the crypt keepers got together to swap yarns and records books.

For me it is a big negative if the entire family is aware of BC's secret. As it is I am trying to cope with alleged things like BC yawning upon his discovery and the comedic dialogue.

For me, too. And anyway, a vampire wouldn't need to yawn because vampires don't need to breathe.

As for the link Philippe provided, it sounds completely horrendous.

Gee, a boy isn't allowed to like a music box without having his sexuality questioned?  [snow_wink]

I know, I know. But I was thinking in the context of 1967, when there were girls' toys and boys' toys--and never the twain did meet. And I know too that technically the music box wasn't a toy per se but something that belonged to Laura, and that's why David was so eager to have it.

Carolyn and Joe's talk at the BW is very well done. The barkeep even gets a couple of lines as he tells Carolyn the phone call is for her.Too bad Joe leaves before Carolyn finds out that it's Roger calling about her mother.

I believe the cloaked figure was Susan Sullivan, who much later played David Selby's main squeeze in Falcon Crest.

This is our first look at Elizabeth's bedroom, and it is luxuriously appointed as befits the Mistress of Collinwood, but all in good taste, without ostentation or display. Great work by Joan Bennett in every scene!

To help convince David to go away with her, Laura gives him not an electric train set or a baseballl mitt--but a music box? Seriously....

Elizabeth is in her first coma.

I've always thought this must be a private cemetery. I love the way the caretaker goes on and on about the "might name of Stockbridge" and the relish with which he describes the gruesome deaths of various family members.

When Vicki and Frank return to Collinwood, Vicki invites him in for a nightcap. Totally oblivious of any DWI laws that might have been on the books, Frank says to make it a double!

Haughtily, Laura tells Vicki, I'm descended from one of the oldest and finest families in the area. Roger tells Frank that the Phoenix police have determined beyond a doubt that the woman who died in the fire was Laura Murdoch Collins. I think that's very amusing! he chortles. Vicki says softly to herself, "Laura Murdoch Collins ... died by fire...." Frank looks at Laura, who seems uncomfortably beneath her stony exterior.

Victoria and Frank Garner are having dinner. As usual, Vicki is wearing a sleeveless dress, and her hair is piled on top of her head, making her far too elegant for her surroundings. Sheesh, it's only the Blue Whale!

Josette's jasmine scent guides Vicki and Frank to the cemetery. We get a spooky cliffhanger as the door to the little house slowly creaks open....

If, in this iteration of the story, the family knows that Barnabas is a vampire, that would explain why nobody seems shocked at those awful talons Depp is sporting. Otherwise, ignoring those would have strained even the Collinses' credulity.
