Current Talk '08 II / Re: Willie and the cows
« on: November 22, 2008, 12:29:33 AM »
When I was a yung-un, we would visit extended family members who lived on farms.  It was always a fun treat when the time came to move the cows from the pastures to the barns and I and my cousins would sit on the cows and ride them like horses as they plodded away, guided by the dogs (who were trained by their mother and father dogs to herd cattle), not minding the least as we straddled their backs for the ride back.  Once back in the barns, they were hooked up for their evening milkings while they munched away on feed fed into the bins in front of them.  It's actually a rather charmed life for the bovines.  I certainly hope that Barnabas, when he decided on a nightly feeding himself on one of the Bessies, didn't accidentally get stuck in one of those milk machines if he got too close.  All I can picture is Willie pulling on his legs saying:  "Relax your lips!"

I'm sorry to hear that, Annie!  My mom had Parkinson's (and later had Alzheimer's) so I know what it's like.  But don't worry - the meds they have will do the trick and your dad will be fine.

Sounds pretty much, Lydia, like how American major corporations run their business.

In my opinion, I think it's wonderfully flattering!  Angelique was going to do what she wanted to do, say what she wanted to say, and not take you-know-what from anybody.  And if she got knocked down, she got right back up and went at it again.  Seems like Bunny does pretty much the same thing.

I remember once seeing the floor plans on a website, but that was quite some time ago and I don't remember which one.  I think it was on a DS site that has long since gone extinct.

Angelique really loved the acoustics in the tower room because up there she could really belt out "Memories" from Cats and it sounded better than anyone had ever sung it!

Check on youtube; I saw a complete episode or two of SP on it some time back - don't know if they're still there.  If they are, it's great fun to watch and gives you an idea about the show.

Well, now we know who gets to play Angelique in Depp's version:  Janet Jackson.

How sad!  His work was a part of my youth.  I was, along with my friends, a huge fan of FM.  We were not allowed by our parents to purchase the magazine, but when I was in elementary school (called "grade school" back then), when we walked home, we stopped at the neighborhood druggist (remember those?) to look at the latest issue and stare with fascination at the photos from films we were never allowed to see.  One set that really spooked me was from House on Haunted Hill with the walking skeleton chasing Vincent Price's wife and cornering her, its bony arm raising up as it placed its hand on her shoulder while she tried to shrink away, screaming in terror.  I had nightmares about that one for weeks!  No wonder our parents wouldn't let us buy the magazine, let alone see the movies covered in it.  But it all gave me such a thrill when I was a little lad.  My thoughts are with him.

This year I had tons of kids ringing that doorbell and went through almost three bags of candy.  Even parents walking with their kids were often in the fun, being dressed up themselves.  What a difference from last year:  not a one, a single one, the whole time.  Probably what made the difference was the trick-or-treat scheduling.  Usually, it's on the Sunday closest to Halloween, from three to five in the afternoon.  This year, they had it (for the first time that I can remember since moving back here) on Halloween itself, from five to seven.  I imagine because the spookfest fell on a Friday this year (and there was no school - teachers' convention, to which no teacher I know has ever gone; which teacher is going to give up a four-day weekend [it starts on Thursday and lasts until Sunday in Madison]?) and the weather was gorgeous:  dry and in the sixties.  So, around here, it's either feast or famine when it comes to Halloween fun.

Well, for that, Nancy, you will be stoned with all of the left-over Reese's Peanut Butter Cups from trick-or-treat!  Well, wait, not those.  You'll be stoned with all the left-over Good'N'Plenties!  So there!  That'll teach you a lesson!

Same to you, Annie, and to everyone else here!

I went to buy trick-or-treat candy yesterday, going to several stores and coming up dry.  In many, not only was there no Halloween candy, there were no Halloween costumes, decorations, etc.  Guess what was up already?  You guessed it!  Ho-ho-ho instead of boo!  I finally got some candy at Walgreens (which still had Halloween stuff around and for sale - they better get with the game like the other stores, or else they won't be able to put up all the Valentine's Day stuff on December 23).

Imagine what it could've been that he had stepped in if the werewolf was already spooking around.  And scoopers weren't even invented yet.

I wonder how they worked around that, especially if he did not show up at all?  Considering the way DS was shot - an entire episode virtually from beginning to end, reshooting bloopers only in the most extraordinary of circumstances, even inserting the musical score and commercials - just how was it done?  We know of a few situations in which emergencies did happen to the performers and they had to do quick rewrites removing the missing actor/actress, or the even more rarely utilized having a stand-in (such as "fake Carolyn" when Nancy Stoddard came down with the flu), but how was it accomplished when Mitch Ryan did not show up?  All I can think is that they had to quick episode rewrite after rewrite until he was dismissed from the series and his permanent replacement found.

For me, it was when the camera panned in on the Wicked Witch's face filling the large crystal ball in The Wizard of Oz.  I thought she was going to jump right out of the old Admiral b&w TV screen and get me.  I would run and hide behind a chair until the scene was over.
