I can't believe MPI originally removed all the cow references. How else are we supposed to start getting some idea of the enormity of Barnabas's crimes? Sheesh.

In the opening exterior shot (I think it’s actually an art card), the large sign on the roof of the Blue Whale is seen only this once.

This is Willie's first appearance after he opened the coffin, I think. Jason is genuinely horrified to see the blood on his sleeve.

Wow, thanks, MB!! It's just about perfect! Barnabas has just told Vicki, This house was not _designed_ to be a tomb. The balustrades, thick with spiderwebs, look like prison bars framing his anguished face. Another great JF moment.

Here's what Barnabas says about all the nationalities and their contributions to the Old House. It mentions plain old bricks from Holland. That Delft fireplace migrates to various settings, if I remember. The list must have been hell for JF to memorize, but it's just great:

The design and construction of this house represented a marriage of the elegance of Europe and the vigor and enterprise of a new world. The foundations were made from rocks left behind by the ancient glaciers (which JF pronounces to rhyme with “racier”), thousands of years ago. The beams and supports were cut from ancient local forests. The plaster walls were made from crushed clamshells and horsehair. Bricks were imported from Holland. That dusty chandelier, brought over from France, gleamed with hypnotic brilliance. That faded wallpaper was specially designed by a Belgian artist. The parquet floors were installed by an Italian craftsman. Cornices and moldings were the effort of a Spanish craftsman.

When Roger meets Barnabas at Collinwood, he offers his new-found "cousin" some Amontillado.  [ghost_grin]

Good luck with your family history, Lydia--what a great project!

Thanks, Lydia! *blush*

I like your comments about Joe. It would have been fun to see him, say, be in a motorcycle gang on the sly or engage in corporate espionage for Burke. Or what if he had fallen for Vicki?

Lest we forget that Dark Shadows started out more or less as a regular soap opera, just somewhat Gothic, most of this episode is devoted to tying up a few loose ends from the Burke Devlin Saga. Carolyn is confronted by the spectacle of not just one but both of the men who recently dumped her. She goes back to Collinwood and unlike her Uncle Roger, she takes out her anger on an appropriate object--Jason McGuire.

We hear a new song on the Blue Whale jukebox--a cover of "I'll Be There," which was a hit for Gerry and the Pacemakers the year before, 1967.

Yes, JF is fabulous! The authority of his portrayal beginning with this, his very first appearance, has always amazed me. I love the line "The Collins _blood_ has always had a persistent strength."

For the first time, but far from the last, Barnabas's very face is his passport and his entreé into the family. And when Elizabeth invites him to dinner, it's the first but far from the last time he'll have to decline! I also love her warmth and graciousness.

When Barn prepares to leave, he courteously wishes Elizabeth a good night, but gives Victoria a deep, elegant bow--and a smile for her alone. (I would have dissolved into a little puddle on the floor!) He leaves the two ladies utterly captivated by his courtly charm.

Great scene with Barn and David at the Old House. You mean you’re not the man from the portrait in the foyer? David asks, disappointed. How could I be? Barnabas asks reasonably. As though accustomed to dealing with small children, Barnabas treats David quite as an equal and seems perfectly at ease conversing with him. Were the writers already thinking about [spoiler]Sarah?[/spoiler] David tests Barnabas's knowledge of the Old House, and of course Barn passes with flying colors.

And of course, Barnabas's speech at the end of this episode is one the highlights of the whole series. It's beautifully written and delivered with extraordinary intensity. He has ARRIVED!

I'm sure Joshua made very careful arrangements and perhaps set up a fund to pay for maintenance and upkeep in perpetuity. Of course, with compound interest, I'm sure that by now the fund has grown to far more than is necessary. I can imagine Mr. Garner, Sr. having his secretary write a monthly check--remember, this was in the days before electronic transfers.

So many great moments, and everybody has already picked out the dialogue that I would have! Here's another moment from the inimitable Mrs. J, as she and Jason look at the portrait of Barnabas:

I’m sorry to say it, but I think he [Willie] really loved the jewelry in the portrait I’ll bet he'd like to see the real version of that ring up close!

He has! He already has!

Absolutely, Janet. The first time I saw the pre-JK episodes, I was surprised that they had another Willie, because JK and JP worked so well together.

Willie enters the mausoleum, and for the first time, we hear a soprano sax with a background of shuddering violins. The sax plays a chromatic, mysterious, almost serpentine, yearning theme that will forever be associated with the character who makes his first appearance at the end of the next episode. Go Bob Cobert!

I love the shot where we see the portrait of Barnabas with Elizabeth and Vicki reflected the mirror. Soon the mirror will move to its accustomed place at the foot of the stairs.

I've probably seen this ep. four or five times now, and each time it's still amazing. The (left) arm shooting out of the coffin to grab Willie's throat--wow.

I think it was just a bunch of studio musicians, like the people who played all the other music.

Congratulations, Lydia! Somehow I missed that before.

I sort of like the idea of the caretaker commuting between cemeteries in an ancient Model T--or maybe even a horse-drawn cart or something.  [ghost_grin]

Here's a link to the New York Times review. They labeled it a "critic's pick."

I may be even more antedeluvian than Gothick--I actually listen to the radio in the morning! Here's a review from WNYC.
