I agree.  He's like Blanche and Jane Hudson, all rolled into one.

Oh.  My.  Goodness.

Good one, Gerard.

My question about Gabriel is this.  How the heck is he getting up and down the stairs in a wheelchair?  You know there is no way Collinwood had an elevator in the pre-electricity 1840's.

Yeah, but even if they didn't have a name for Alzheimer's back in the 1970's (or 1840's for that matter), many people must've been touched by that dread disease.  I think it's a plausible explanation for why Daniel was so far gone.  That, and the fact that he could have been seriously warped by all that weird sh*t he saw in the 1790's.  Would be enough to drive anyone crazy.

Of course, everyone's right - the most plausible explanation is that the writers just didn't remember (or care) about what came before on the show.  Nor did they think anyone would be watching this stuff thirty odd years later!

Current Talk '03 II / Re:The best of KLS
« on: September 17, 2003, 10:41:11 PM »
KLS will definitely missed by me, though I have to admit that in the last year or so of Dark Shadows she was criminally misused.  Can't say I blame her for getting gone.

Maggie as she first appears in episode 1, full of pluck and sass, is just wonderful!  Wish that more of this side of the character had been retained through the years.

Josette, although others may not agree, is an interesting and complex character.  She isn't quite the defenseless ingenue her family believes her to be, and KLS brilliantly portrayed her growing confusion, dread and horror as things around her started to go tragically and supernaturally wrong.

Although Rachel Drummond is perhaps not very bright and none too strong an individual, I think KLS did a good job bringing her to life.  Flawed though she is, it was sad to see her die needlessly.

Kitty, Lady Hampshire was IMHO the best of KLS's performances on the show.  Shady, duplicitious, and no better than she should be, it's clear that the actress had fun playing this character before the whole 'Josette amnesia' sank in.

Would that the writers had given KLS the chance to play Samantha Collins!  IMHO, 'Katy' definitely had the chops to play that nasty ice-queen.

She was there from day one, and I have to agree that Dark Shadows was just never the same after Kathryn Leigh Scott left the show!

LOVE the montage today, btw!  MB is there any way this can be saved somewhere in 'Member's Mausoleum' once the "real" board is back up? :-*

Current Talk '03 II / Re:How bizarre!-- SciFi repeated an episode
« on: September 04, 2003, 09:49:53 PM »
I wonder if there was a method to SciFi's madness...

There are 1225 episodes of Dark Shadows, an odd number.  Showing two each per day dictates that when the run of the show ends, on the last day there would only be one episode left unaired.

Maybe SciFi doubled up on 1087 so that this won't happen, and even on the last day they'll be able to air two eps.  :-

Current Talk '03 II / Re:Barnabas is head over heels again....he thinks
« on: August 27, 2003, 09:44:11 PM »
Agreed.  Barnabas and Roxanne do have a May/September thing going on.  And it doesn't work.  Not necessarily because of the age thing, but because the two have no "chemistry."

What about his pairing with Josette, Angelique or Vicki?  Were KLS, Parker or Moltke that much older than Donna Wandrey?

Another good example of how fast these folks forget things on DS!    (Don't ya wish we could forget the bad things as fast as they do!)  ;)

Amen to that, sister!   ;)

Current Talk '03 II / Re:Never without you, Julia!
« on: August 21, 2003, 05:53:46 PM »
I do think many people undervalue any non-sexual bond between a man and a woman as if it simply isn't as important as a romantic relationship.  I have always disagreed with that notion.  Friendships are indeed a rock of survival for many even those also involved in a romantic relationships.  Emotional intimacy is a lot harder to develop and sustain.

I so agree, Nancy!  And even if we don't believe that Barnabas and Julia had mutual romantic feelings for each other, the friendship that they built over the years was amazingly solid.  This scene illustrates that perfectly.  Think back to 1967.  If she had betrayed him then (and he usually thought she had), his impulse was always choke first, ask questions later!

But by 1970, they had been through so much together.  It's nice to see that the writers had enough respect for the emotional intimacy between these characters to include this scene of closeness; it shows true growth - a hallmark of good television, IMHO.  :)

Current Talk '03 II / Never without you, Julia!
« on: August 20, 2003, 10:24:00 PM »
The Barnabas and Julia relationship, dysfunctional though it may be, sends a pleasant chill up my spine during this storyline.  And yesterday's scene in which Barnabas refused to leave Julia behind in 1995 is truly touching.  The tenderness and concern in his voice, the way he looks at her, the way he touches her are a delight for Barnabas/Julia ¢â‚¬Ëœshippers.

It would appear that Roxanne is already forgotten, and that perhaps Barnabas has begun realize just how much he cares for the good doctor.  Perhaps he has even started to look at Julia in a more than platonic light.  Dare we hope?  I have to admit to getting a little choked up as I watched this scene.  :'(

I seem to remember some source claiming that Jonathan Frid and Grayson Hall both stated that eventually, they decided to play these characters like a couple.  Does anyone know if this is the point in the series that they made this creative decision?  Or is this just one of the many myths that seem to surround Dark Shadows???

Oh SO boring...boring...boring!!!

Bob - totally loved your diatribe regarding what you'd like to have seen in 1995.  The bit about Barnabas and Julia at the Blue Whale listening to the hits of '95 on the jukebox (Gangsta's Paradise - ha!) was really too much.

Thanks for giving my morning a lift!

It 's been a bit of mystery to me too why everyone is treating Barnabas and Julia like bastard stepchildren at a family reunion.

On the other hand, maybe their mysterious reappearance with nary a year of age on them is a bit too much to take.  Perhaps they're suspected of being not quite right, or even the cause of what happened in 1970.

And did it occur to anyone else that it's ironic to see Quentin in the role of the tortured victim of a vengeful ghost, when not so very long ago he himself was a vengeful ghost?  Of course that was before Barnabas changed the past, so that ghost wasn't really this Quentin...

Another thing: would the 1995 we're seeing an example of parallel time if Julia and Barnabas are able to successfully go back to 1970 and stop the destruction of Collinwood from happening?
