And I was completely forgetting the Victorian Gothic horror serial "Varney the Vampire, or, The Feast of Blood."  Varney is the first example of the "sympathetic" vampire who hates his condition.  This story predates "Dracula" by some 50 years, but one wonders if DC and co. would have been familiar with the story.  It has rather been eclipsed by Stoker's Dracula and it's descendants.

I'd be more inclined to connect the sympathetic supernatural creature story (as well as his looking to re-discover his lost love) with the main plot of Universal's "The Mummy."

Current Talk '08 I / DVD collections....
« on: February 03, 2008, 06:47:56 PM »
Recently, I saw a copy of the first Barnabas collection at a dvd store in the slimline dvd case...

Does anyone happen to know how one might be able to replace Collections 1-10 with slimlines (short of buying them again. of course)?  Would it be at all possible, one wonders if MPI would be willing to sell empty cases with with covers for a a nominal fee? :)

Too bad most props and stuff were left to rust and rot. Nobody thought people might someday pay a fortune for them!
Indeed,  I am particularly curious where that magnificent grandfather clock ended up...

And they did have answering machines back then.   A rich family would definitely have had one.
Perhaps, but I think wealthy families at that time (and even now) would have employed a servant to answer the phone.  It seems to me that, answering machines would have been marketed more to the middle class, who weren't starving but couldn't afford someone to answer the phone or employ an answering service.  And keep in mind, Liz was a for all intents and purposes a recluse.  She probably didn't think any more of obtaining an answering machine that she did of obtaining an television!  We should count ourselves lucky they even had a phone .... :)

True, the mystery of Vicki's parentage was never revealed onscreen, but I believe Joan Bennett stated in an tv interview years after the show ended that Vicki was indeed Liz' daughter (though, IIRC, I think Art Wallace's original "bible" would have revealed that Vicki was actually the illegitimate child of one of the Collins' servants and her parentage was hidden to avoid scandal).  I suppose we will never know for sure, but the idea that Barnabas' thrall being weaker on blood relations makes a kind of sense, though one could also argue that Vicki and Carolyn were freed from his control because the curse was broken and they minds simply blocked out the horrifiying circumstances...
Sorry, had to amend that....emphasis mine.

But is Vicky related to Barnabas?

If the mirrors symbolize anything.... could it be the fact that Barnabas is cured, and now has a reflection?
It also symbolizes the director's new found freedom to use mirrors for just that reason! :)

I occasionally see the odd prop show up on ebay, a bowl, or a candelabrum, but has snyone ever seen any of the big set pieces show up on other shows? The statue on the entrance hall table, for example, or the grandfather clock?

Well, I'm not sure that there was a reluctant, self-loathing vampire before Barnabas, at least onscreen.  And I also don't remember seeing a psychiatrist/haematologist/perpetual houseguest who nurses an unrequited love for a vampire before Julia.

Nope, sorry ....

Gloria Holden as "Dracula's Daughter"  :)

She even fell in love with a doctor and tried to be "cured" of her "affliction"  which is a twist of the Julia/Barn relationship...

Somewhere, I got the impresstion that affixing the cross on the inside of the coffin would prevent him from escaping, whether that was because the presence of the cross weakened him or put him in some kind of stasis, I don't know.  Am I crazy, or was there some (likely obscure) reference to that, either refering to Barnabas or maybe Angelique?

Had the cross not been present, would Barnabas have been able to escape?  Has he been shown to have superhuman strength.  Come to think of it.  He has the ability to transform into a bat.  Has he ever been shown to transform into mist or a wolf, a la Dracula?

Perhaps the Garner's used the same decorator ;)

Regarding Room 24 - is the doorway to the kitchenette just a blank wall in later uses or do we just not see later?

That was my first thought. Though the many other insights posted here are well said and appreciated.  But ahhh, that beefy Jennings charm....

There just isn't any other word for it, but Vampire Tom was .... hot ....

Sooo, how did the "secret" mausoleum become secret again?  Did Nora and Jamison never find out about it? and the other living members of the family died or disappeared without passing on the secret?
