I'm a Barn and Julia shipper too, and I'm sure we would have seen them get together at last if the show hadn't been canceled.

The whole business of Barnabas finally declaring his love for Angelique was pretty irritating and was completely implausible to me from the first time I saw it.

Lydia, they probably used a swimming pool's worth of fake blood for HoDS! There's a gory scene in the middle, and the ending has even more gore. This being October, it's bound to be on some channel or other if you haven't got Netflix. It's a hoot. (I remember TCM showed it at some point last year, maybe as part of a Joan Bennett festival.)

MB, you are amazing--thanks for yet another JF letter! It does seem as though the writers are still planning to kill Barnabas off. I wonder if there's a specific moment or episode that indicates that they changed their minds.

I'm sure Barn brought Willie to the mausoleum not only to do the heavy lifting but also to torment him--he seems never to let an opportunity go by.

I don't remember that we ever find out the name of Sarah's dog.

Sarah's family is stupendously wealthy by 1795 standards. When Sam Evans was sketching her portrait and admiring her dress, she tells him casually that she has lots of other much nicer ones.

So I'm sure she has lots of dolls too, and that not all of them are identical.

I love those first 1995 episode! So atmospheric! And Julia and Barnabas have such an interesting conversation! It more than makes up for the silly zombies.

In fact, the whole 1995/1970 story line with its big mysteries is one of my faves, although I know I'm in the minority on that.  [hall2_cheesy]

Lingering in the secret room of the mausoleum, Barnabas ignores Willie's discomfort. He remarks yet again on Sarah's purity and goodness. Then he smiles with patronizing amusement. You don’t like it here, do you you, Willie? he observes. No, Willie answers, with all too many memories of how this room changed his life. After some further Willie-baiting, Barnabas decides they will leave.

Willie hits his head as they exit the secret room. Poor John Karlen is in pain, clutching his head during the rest of the scene.

Poor David (still hiding in the coffin) can hear Willie open the panel but can't see how, so of course he's well and truly trapped. After Willie and Barnabas leave, he climbs out of the coffin ON SCREEN, the only view of this procedure during the entire series.

More new costumes: Carolyn wears a pretty, cherry-colored long-sleeved dress as she paces up and down the drawing room, waiting for news. Joe comes back after not finding David. After they spend some time blaming themselves for David's disappearance, Carolyn assures Joe that she's over Burke and is happy that Vicki is engaged to him. Vicki returns from a date with Burke. She is wearing a lime-green coat over a pink--but of course sleeveless--dress.

Vicki goes out to be miserable on the terrace, where Barnabas finds her. She tells him about David's disappearance, then bursts into tears, ashamed of her weakness before him. Barnabas takes this golden opportunity by the shoulders (literally) and tells Vicki, Why don’t you just lean on my shoulder and cry your heart out. No one will hear you but me, he assures her. I’m sure he means only to comfort her, and very happy he is to do it, especially with Burke nowhere near. But when he happens to look up, he sees that the moon is full (if not blue). Suddenly overwhelmed by Vicki's nearness, he is poised to sink his fangs into her neck.

Then all the more reason they should have been accurate. It would have been hilarious to see Roger in blaze orange!  [hall2_grin]

Beautiful October design!

Yeah. Time in the Collinwood universe is like a kaleidoscope combined with a Moebius strip.

We'll find out that [spoiler]in 1795, Sarah died AFTER Barnabas changed. [/spoiler]

As for Joe and Carolyn, I guess their mutual concern for David overrides any awkwardness they might be feeling. Or at least that's what we're supposed to think.

Willie went back to the crypt once that we know of before now: to rescue Maggie when Barnabas locked her in the coffin overnight. He went the moment it was safe, because we could hear the birds chirping and the sky was just starting to get light.

We saw David swinging on it long ago, so I suppose Elizabeth had Matthew Morgan set it up for him.

I'm with you, Philippe! I loved the whole mystery of Rose Cottage as well as its cozy little interior. Also, I read somewhere that JB said that Flora was her favorite character.

Did Joshua ever find himself sitting on Sarah’s doll as he started an important business meeting?

 [ghost_grin] [ghost_grin] [ghost_grin]

I guess Sarah borrows her doll back from Maggie when she's feeling lonely. And I thought she was very clever about getting her little cap back.

Willie tells Barnabas that he saw Sarah outside, but then she disappeared. Barnabas thinks Willie is lying at first, but Willie convinces him otherwise. He even gets some small measure of revenge when he shrewdly guesses, You’re afraid of what Sarah may tell someone else about you! She’s appeared to Maggie Evans, David, Vicki--everyone except you.

But later, Barnabas decides to look for Sarah hmself--at "her final resting place." Even though Willie has very bad memories of the Collins mausoleum, he has to go along anyway.

On a few occasions, residents of the Great House talk about going down to the gates, so there must be a fence somewhere, probably one of those very tall metal ones like rows of spears with pointy spikes on the top.

[spoiler]And in 1840PT, the Stokeses live in the gatehouse.[/spoiler]

I don't remember if Josette's ghost shows up in this story line, but I'm guessing that she has fled Barnabas in death, just as she fled him in life.

Every period gown in the show has a zipper up the back, but I think all the costumes available in those days did also. I don't think it was until the BBC got really serious about all those period dramas that they started making gowns that lace up.

And of course, in Lord of the Rings, they made a point of dressing everybody authentically (I know, for the imaginary Middle Eart) from the skin out. That included lots of lace-up dresses and other goodies.

Faced with a decision, Burke has chosen Vicki over Barnabas's past. Burke and Barnabas have a very nice little roundabout conversation. Burke apologizes and says, I’ll control my curiosity and accept you simply as a very private person. Would you like me to tell you what I do during the day, Barnabas says (a masterstroke!). Burke declines the offer and they part seemingly the best of friends, shaking hands and even addressing each other by their first names. Vicki is suitably overjoyed. Burke even trustingly leaves Barnabas alone with Vicki, promising to see her again tomorrow evening. He's earned his goodnight kiss, and Vicki delivers gladly. After he leaves, Barnabas is careful to ask her if she ever shared any of Burke's suspicions; of course she emphatically denies it. He repeats to her the offer he made to Burke, but of course she insists it isn't necessary, so this round goes to Barnabas.

But of course, this truce is only as good--and as durable--as the paper it's printed on.

Julia senses Sarah's presence for the first time. But Sarah still won't appear to Barnabas. Her portrait in the family album looks remarkably like a photograph.

Oh, and yes, Vicki's sideburns were fashionable on teenage girls way back when. She's actually a couple of years behind the times, but we all had ’em.
