Current Talk '08 I / Re: DS Repetition....
« on: August 03, 2008, 06:30:58 AM »
How about the fact that Windcliff had to have the WORST security of any hospital in Maine?  Maybe the whole country.  All those people who just "happened" to escape.  And it's funny.  You wonder why anybody ever bothered to drive there.  It was so much shorter to walk.  Maggie, Elizabeth, Amy, 'Tad' & 'Carrie' ALL walked back to Collinwood--without being seen, of course.

And talk about repeating things.  How about when you watch your favorite parts over and over?  Darned if those characters don't keep making the SAME mistakes no matter HOW many times you tell then what NOT to do.  Listen to me!  I have the benefit of foreknowledge!

Current Talk '08 I / Re: Roger - a neglected gem
« on: August 03, 2008, 06:01:41 AM »
Like Pansity, I regret that I didn't discover the DS Festivals until after Louis Edmonds had passed away.  I LOVE Roger and each of his characters on the show.  Nobody was a cardboard cutout.  You knew, deep down inside--maybe WAAY deep down inside--there was lots more to his characters than just the lines they spoke.

In my own attempt at fan fiction, I've tackled both Roger and Joshua (though Joshua may be a bit easier as he's had the benefit of learning from the past) and gotten some rather nice comments, but the last chapter I wrote was met with mixed reaction from my betareader/festival roommate and her "I liked it but..." always elicits an "ok, what's wrong?"

What was wrong, we decided, was that I was unfamiliar with the original Roger.  I didn't get to Collinwood until Roger arrived with his lovely wife Cassandra, and for several days, I witnessed all these people being really rude to his new wife--just because they THOUGHT she looked like somebody else...)  Anyway, that was my first Roger moment.

But I went back and marathoned the first 200 episodes, many that I had never seen, and went, "OOOOOHHHHHH!!!!!  I GET IT now!!!!  LOL!!!!

The resulting rewrite was met with "YES.  THAT's IT!!!  MUCH BETTER!!!!"

I'm certainly glad I did that.  Now most of the first 200 eps are in my "favorite storylines/parts of the show.  Thanks, Adamsgirl!!!!

the thing I'd dislike the most, though, is being subjected to rap, and rap by a white guy, who thinks it's an appropriate thing to do just because the candidate's black.

I'm sure it's hard to take in bits and pieces of discussion and have them make sense, but Selby's rap had nothing to do with Obama.  The scene was taken from Selby's book, "Lincoln's Better Angel," and was of Lincoln and the book's main character watching the performance of a black choir member who was rapping "The Gettysburg Address."  Selby's point was that words NEED to be SPOKEN, not just read, and the young man in the book was doing just that.

If you're interested in the book, Pansity just posted a review in a separate thread.

I'd go find it now, but my computer would probably crash.

Just setting the record straight...

Also, Lara refused to do her laugh this year.

Lara did not refuse to do her laugh.  She said she would do it "tomorrow" (Saturday) and she did.  If she would have gone into more detail, she might have given away a bit of the Collinsport Players' skit.

the audio dramas.  I really want to buy them if I get good reviews from you guys.

I bought the first four a few months after they were available, and was VERY disappointed in the first one.  To me, the storyline discounted almost the entire run of the show--as if all of the trials and tribulations that we sat through didn't count for anything.  I thought Return to Collinwood and Vengeance at Collinwood were much better in that they reintroduced us to our favorite characters and THEN delved into the plot.

I do understand that they only had a handful of the original actors and also needed to explain why Barnabas was going to sound different, but the backstory (various characters already dead) and resulting plot was very unsatisfactory to me.

I've read many glowing reviews and I agree that the actors did a great job and it was nice to hear them together again, but for me, the storyline was comparable to Marty McFly and Doc Brown coming back to the alternate "present."  Where IS this??? And WHAT have you done with COLLINSPORT???

I can't report on the other storylines because after the first one was such a huge disappointment, I couldn't bring myself to listen to the rest, so this is just my two cents on the first one.  The rest are still in their wrappers.

I saw the presentation and I was very impressed!!!!  I'm more into fantasy and romance type stuff, so when Adamsgirl said she wanted to see the time travel presentation, I was like..."okaaaaay..."  But as it worked out, I was there, and I UNDERSTOOD what Frank said.  I mean, not the entire concept so I could re-explain it, but I was very satisfied (not to mention intrigued) with his explanation.

And it truly did seem like something that of course, we don't completely understand now, but seems quite comparable to other scientific achievements which to someone a hundred years ago or more would just dismiss as being impossible.

So keep an open mind, and we can get together in the future (or in the past) and discuss it.

Cool Countdown Clock!!!

I...uh...suppose it wouldn't be popular to ask that the countdown clock be cranked back a little?  There are major fires burning north of where I live, which hasn't done much for my asthma and apparently messed with my immune system, because I've suddenly got a major case of bronchitis.  (For those of you who might see...or make that HEAR me at the Fest, I AM NOT CONTAGIOUS.  LOL!)  I WOULD like a little more healing time so I'm not barking through the entire weekend.

How about if everybody could just do me a favor and think "HAPPY LUNG" thoughts, I'd really appreciate it.  [pray]

"It would have been a shame if he'd missed Quentin's 40th anniversary year.

Now it only remains to be seen if anyone at the Fest podium will formally acknowledge the milestone...

I wouldn't hold my breath for that.  Last year, they didn't acknowledge anybody ELSE's 40th...

"...how will the autographed photos be distributed?

Hey Prof!  Seems like last year, we got the pics as we checked in.  Then, of course, we had to bring them to the banquet so he could sign them.  Since the pics are already signed, I'm guessing they'll do it the same way again.

"...using the "Click here to try all unread topics" feature that appears within "Show unread posts since last visit" will bring up all the posts you haven't read.

I hope that helps.  [ghost_smiley]

Thanks, MB.  And that would help.  If it worked for me like that.  But I KNOW I have never gotten around to reading EVERY topic/post on the boards.  I don't think I have ever marked anything unread, and still my "all unread topics" is only ever one page of posts.  ???

Time to PARTY!!!!  [cheer]  [occasion15] [occasion16]
(No swinging from the chandeliers, though.  You might knock one of the crystals loose and then Julia would have to pick it up and run around and ask everybody to find the center.[noway])

Birthday wave!
