Current Talk '08 I / Re: Beyond the Shadows
« on: June 11, 2008, 08:40:06 PM »
Just listened to some of the tracks you guys suggested, and it appears that what I heard was indeed song #6 from Dark Shadows: The 30th Anniversary Collection, "Theme from Dark Shadows (alternate)" by the Robert Cobert Orchestra. Yay!

Thanks, ProfStokes and barnabasjr! You both rock! [ghost_grin]

How's about Rachel Griffiths as Julia? Although Helena Bonham Carter would be a great choice.

Personally, I kind of see Emmy Rossum as Vicki - she's young, innocent, beautiful, and if they decided to go the Vicki/Josette route, she'd be the perfect Josette.

What about Anthony Stewart Head (from Buffy) as Roger Collins?

Hey fellow Dark Shadows Fans!!!

I have a question, and maybe it's a dumb one. But I was recently watching the very end of the show on DVD set 26. Following the last episode, there's a special feature called "Beyond the Shadows."  Most of it consists of a narrated "what ever happened to" segment dealing with most of the major characters, but then after that, there is a musical interlude where they show brief scenes of most all of the storylines from DS. The music they're playing is like a 60's cocktail lounge sounding version of the main DS theme song. My question is, does anyone know where/if this particular version of the DS theme might be available for purchase. It's pretty nifty, and I'd love to add it to my collection.

If anyone could help, that would be great!

Thanks!

Todd (Lefanu)

Well Magnus, I get your point, but it isn't that I find the Dream Curse to be so bad it's laughable - that's not what I take from any particular storyline of DS.  Let me attempt to clarify.

Even some of my less favorite storylines on DS are still better than almost anything else I've ever seen on television.  It's more that I know lots of fans find the Dream Curse unfocused, but that's the element of the story that I like.  There were so many things going on, and you never knew what was going to happen next.  Aside from Adam, this particular wasn't really derived from something else so it seems fresh, and sometimes like the writers weren't even quite sure where they were going to take it, so there's always an element of surprise, which is groovy.

Admittedly, there's a camp factor going on, esp. with the Nick/Angelique sideline, and that certainly has some appeal.  But the storyline itself I find compelling - interesting, involving, unforgettable - it's the first DVD set of  "Dark Shadows" that I bought. Don't get me wrong - the show means a lot to me too - I'm always pulling for it!  [ghost_smiley]

Current Talk '08 I / Re: Drinking in Collinsport

Not sure I remember a specific episode in which he was drinking, but wasn't PT1970 Roger Collins a lush, in addition to being kind of a psychopath?  [ghost_embarrassed]

And I also got the impression that the Carolyn of that storyline was a bit of a drinker, along with her hubs, William H. Loomis.

Angelique "Cassandra" or "Valerie" or "Miranda" Bouchard Collins
Danielle "the most evil woman of the 18th century" Roget
Alexis "I'm NOT Angelique" Stokes, and her sister,
Alexis "I secretly am Angelique" Stokes

The Dream Curse storyline, though it seems to bug the crap out of many DS fans, is one of my favorites.  I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the bad wig and incompetent spellcasting of Angelique, or Nicholas Blair's sardonic attitude towards my favorite witch - he's like the worst boss in the world!

There's so much going on in the Dream Curse storyline: Maggie regaining her memory, Adam running amok, Julia b*tchslapping Cassandra, the unintentionally hysterical "most evil woman of the 18th century" Danielle Roget, and everyone having that goofy dream.  From my perspective, it's a mess, but it's also just a lot of fun.

Current Talk '08 I / Re: Another thing to think about....
« on: March 16, 2008, 06:15:06 PM »
I just finished watching the 1840 storyline last night, and am definitely among the confused.  The way it looks to me, the Collinwood to which Barnabas, Julia and Stokes returned would almost have to be a parallel time 1971.

If they changed the way 1840 had originally happened, creating a new future, wouldn't the old timeline have to still be in existence somewhere?  I can't remember which cousin posted about this - it was a long time ago - but basically they thought that the 1795/6 that Victoria Winters visited had to be a different one than what Barnabas remembered, since he remembered Phyllis Wick (not Vicki) as the governess, even after Vicki's return from the past.

[Spoilery]

Similarly, since Angelique gets killed in 1840 and Roxanne does too, neither of them can have been around in the regular present day storyline.  That changes the storyline so much that a present day without Cassandra/Angelique or the vampire Roxanne would have to be a parallel timeline, since they figured pretty heavily in what had come before on the show.

It's pretty mind-boggling because if Barn & co. really changed the past that much, so that the present day Collins family had no memory of Gerard (or Daphne, whom 1970 Quentin was in love with, remember?) how could the 1971 we saw be the same as the one they left?  It would be so altered, a viewer would need a score card to keep up.

In this "new" 1971 Collinwood, what happened with Dr. Lang and Adam in 1968?  Who knows?  Angelique wasn't there to affect that.  Is Tom Jennings still alive?  He must be, there was no vampire Angelique.  What about the Leviathans?  Angelique was a major help in defeating them.  Is Maggie at Wyndclyffe?  She shouldn't be, since it was her victimization by vampire Roxanne that finally drove her over the edge.

Really, it's just too much.

By the way, Mysterious Benefactor - you said upthread that the writers had some plans for what they'd do with "present day" Collinwood after they'd finished with PT1841.  Do you know what those plans were?

Current Talk '07 II / Re: i'm doing 1840...finally
« on: October 06, 2007, 06:42:06 PM »
hey msbryk,

1840 is one of my favorite storylines, but there are definitely some inconsistencies that have left me scratching my head too.  hope you enjoy your first viewing of it - i think it's really fun!  and you're right - it is pretty to look at.

piggybacking onto what mb was saying above, it isn't ever stated what the ages of gabriel and edith's kids are - in fact, being "away at school", they could even be older than tad, imo.  maybe the father of edith, quentin et al was almost university age?

edith getting killed in the 1840 storyline creates a paradox that many dark shadows fans have debated for years.  i can't explain it either, except to say (somewhat cynically) that i'm sure the writers likely didn't care if anyone remembered edith from 1897, and certainly never dreamed we'd be sitting around, virtually, talking about why they did what they did forty years later.  inconsistent, sloppy writing/continuity like this certainly isn't uncommon on television.

as for the leticia/pansy similarity - i'm pretty sure everyone just liked nancy barrett as that character, so they brought her back, albeit with a different name.  perhaps leticia's meant to be an ancestor of pansy?

as to daniel supposedly having been the last of the collinses in 1795/6, i don't remember ever hearing that, but perhaps someone else here does.  since we were later informed that the collins family came to maine in the 1690's, there were certainly enough generations between the 17th and 19th centuries for an offshoot line from which desmond's unnamed father sprang.  plus, with the collins family being so...peculiar, i'm sure that even if they had said daniel was the last collins, there would've been some black sheep of the family in the 17th or 18th centuries that didn't make it into the official family history, who nobody acknowledged.  yeah, that's fanwanking, but it could be used to explain any "cousin" showing up later on the show.

Current Talk '07 I / Re: Is it just me, or was Charity more likable...
« on: April 01, 2007, 03:43:58 AM »
It's great to see this thread!  Especially since I'm just now watching the episode arc in which Charity goes permanently Pansy.  Have to say, I most liked Charity when she was under Barnabas's influence, and then liked her even more when Petofi caused the permanent possesion.  After a bit, Chansy (or, Pansity?) seemed to adjust, and to really revel in her new personality.  Am kind of wondering how much of her new persona was the result of the 'secret' Charity coming to the fore and how much was the result of Pansy - it's almost like the posession allowed Charity to become the woman she'd always secretly longed to be.  Loved her relationship with Judith late in the storyline.

Current Talk '07 I / Re: Andre DuPres in the 1795 storyline
« on: January 06, 2007, 11:35:13 PM »
I too wish they'd handled the Andre situation better in light of the events that took place in his abscence.  If they took the trouble to have Natalie say he was away, couldn't they have simply written that he'd sent word that he was very ill?  Or (cheesy as this might be) couldn't they have acted like his character had only just exited the room before a scene began, anytime it seemed like  something had happened that he should have been there for?

And yeah, given that he wasn't around anymore, and that the writers seemed to have no compunction about whom they killed off towards the end of the 1795/6 storyline, why didn't they just have Angelique do away with him, or even have Barnabas accidentally kill him?  Certainly would've added a whole other weird level to the Barnabas/Josette storyline.

I really enjoyed David Ford as an actor - wish he'd been around for the rest of the show.

Current Talk '06 II / Re: parts you can't re-watch?
« on: August 16, 2006, 05:48:44 PM »
Unfortunately, there are parts of the series that I've never seen (many of the pre-Barnabas episodes and the latter part of 1841PT).  But I have to say, some of the storylines that I found less than compelling the first time around (like Leviathans and the Dream Curse/Adam 1968 story), I really enjoyed on second viewing.

Like several others have mentioned, I think there are moments in every storyline, maybe even in every episode that are worth repeated viewings.  With that being said, I'm not in a rush to see 1795 again soon, but only because I just got done watching that a couple months ago.

Castlebee, I love your fantasy!  And thanks, Lydia - counting all those different DS related "sheep" will be a great aid to my insomnia.. ;)

I have to admit that on the nights when I have trouble sleeping (this is one of them!), instead of counting sheep, I sometimes imagine I'm a long-lost cousin, recently arrived at the great house of Collinwood.  I go over the layout of the mansion in my head, and imagine what all the Collins family members (and perennial guest Dr. Julia Hoffman) are getting up to at 1:00am!

Semi-non-practicing Episcopalian here...have flirted with Wicca and Buddhism and would have to say my personal beliefs are more like spiritual agnosticism.  Anyway, enough about me.

Agreed that the Collins family would likely have only attended church because it was the thing to do - social standing and all.  And yeah, based on what I saw of the ministers who came to the house and the simplicity of the rites as shown, the Collinses weren't Episcopalians - not "high church" anyway.  From what I know of Congregationalists, that sounds more like a fit.

Gothick - I hope you have a loverly vacation!
