Current Talk '02 I / Re: Jeff Kicks Barney's butt!!

Way to go Jeff, but I think Barn would have kicked his butt if the two got into a brawl. I think Barn would have a lot of penned up anger and fustration to unleashed to compensate for his weakened state. Perhaps a fist fight might have caused a vampiric regression which would have been disastorous for poor Jeff ;) Either way I would never bet against Barn in a brawl..

My guess: T. Eliot Stokes, Professor of Semiology.
I see him as a man who has made a study of reading signs and omens in varioius states of nature -- whether it is the contrast of shadows as the morning suns reflects off the Old House, or the nuances in the sounds of the birds in the trees surrounding Collinwood. Professor Stokes is attune with the metaphysical aspects of reality.   ;)
He may, very well be able to answer Julia Hoffman's great retorical question, "What does this mean"? ?!?

I have to say Barnabas because he turned it all around and made DS the great show it was.
I also liked everything Louis Edmonds did: Roger and especially Joshua.
Thayer David was so great as Ben Stokes. I miss Ben.
Of course, he is great AS Professor Stokes! ::)

Maybe it is because of  the Cinco de Mayo Holliday. Why, just today I was strangly compelled to make chille. ;)
Any excuse to pre-empt Dark Shadows :(

Current Talk '02 I / Re: DID ANYONE SEE THAT?
« on: May 01, 2002, 03:10:01 AM »
I don't believe that a new DS would be as good as the original. Yes, it would not have mistakes, and the scenes would be more graphic, and the actors would be more culturally diverse to reflect today's society.
But, I don't watch DS to see perfection and dazzeling effects. I watch it because it is great acting stripped down to its most pure form-- like a play, with little rehearsel; and when it is right it is  powerful.
AS a viewer, I gloss over the mistakes and accept the good with the bad.
However, perhaps the best thing about DS is that we don't have to see the gore and blood. I don't need to see it and I am glad I don't. I know we could have seen the bloody details of many horrible deaths, and to me that would have ruined the charm of this great show.

I like Julia's new look. She looks less stern >:(, and more approachable and friendly :).
I do find it rather strange that her hair changed in the middle of an episode. I suppose she must of taken a long lunch and came back and supprised everyone.
The smile on her face when Barnabas complimented her looked so real. She looked cute in an under-confident, girly way -- the way an awkward adolesent would respond when told she is pretty. ;)

In the second episode on Friday, Barnabas said to Nathen Forbes, "You can't kill me, I'm already dead."
Wasn't that the line that a very infamous mass murder  (whom I shall not name) used when he stood up in the court room ranting and raging? ?!?

I often think about what a turbulent time 1968 was. I glad I was only a child and didn't think it too scary that the world seem to be going to heck. I give my parents credit for holding it together during those times.

I, too, was touched by the emotional drama of today's episodes. I think they may have been the best to date.

I also had the feeling that Joshua was really a good man at heart. His demanding demeanor was only a front.
Also, his admitted inability to love -- he really could love, he just couldn't show it. Big difference between one who can't love and one who can't express love. Feeling love and keeping it inside is a painful existance.
Joshua, in the end is a heroic and romantic figure. A brave and nobel man. I consider myself fortunate that I have not had to withstand the pains that Joshua Collins endured.

I really liked today in the first episode when some male voice yelled out the lines "Go to the old House" that Bathia Mapes was supposed to say. It was strange she was staning next to the coffin in a daze and the voice called out the line for her. She then repeated them.
I played it over several times. Somehow the intensity was not lost.

Current Talk '02 I / Re: Squeaky Bats

HI Jennifer:
I live in the suburbs where there are still a lot of trees and wooded areas near by.
I guess the key to seeing lots of bats is going out before it gets too dark. Dusk, when Barnabas wakes up.
Son ;)

Current Talk '02 I / Squeaky Bats
« on: April 15, 2002, 02:57:16 AM »
Barnabas has revived my childhood curiosity for those wondeful flying mammals: Bats. Last night was the first real warm night of the year in southern New England. Being such a pleasent evening I decided to take a walk at dusk. The cloud cover make the sky milky white -- perfect for bat watching!
I stood there in the dark watching in amazment. Bats, everywhere; their seemingly erratic flight mesmerized me. Up and down, left to right, circular swoops. And, yes! Squeaks. Not quite like on DS, but they do make squeaky sounds.
I remembered how my mother told me that bats have been know to swoop down and get entangled in peoples hair, getting stuck to the point where they could only be removed by shaving off your hair ( I don't have to worry about that anymore). AS a child I wouldn't go out at night without a hat. But that is just an Old Wives' Tale. However, the bats were flying very close to my head. My guess they were after the insects that were attracted to me.
I would like to know more about bats. They must hybernate? Hoe long do they live? Do they hang upsidedown in trees during the day? Anyone out ther have bat knowledge?
Well, I must go and take another walk in the night. More bat observations!
;)

Current Talk '02 I / Re: Professor Thayer David
« on: April 13, 2002, 03:37:45 AM »
I am a big fan of Mr. Stokes ( as dipicted by Thayer David). Somehow is is both simple and complex. He is strong as an ox, yet kind and gentle. Like Barnabas he feels an intense internal struggle. Where as Barnabas's struggles is with the monster he has become and the man he used to be, Ben's struggle is purly human.
I found the "Matthew" character to be very well play, but not as likable. He was kind of an mean and irritable old goat, as compared to Ben's lovable and faithfull demeanor.  Ben is kind of like a beloved family dog (like Lassie, or Rin Tin Tin). However somewhere in his simplicity is a very wise man. An uneducated great mind,  Low is self-esteem, and lacking in self-confidence.

Now everyone sing along:

Everone wants a Henry,
wouldn't want a Willie or a Sam.
I am the eighth old man I'm Henry,
Henry the eighth I am.
(second verse, same as the first).
Oh, Im Henry.....
