Luciaphil's Idle Thoughts '02 / Re: Idle Thoughts--Wedding Bell Blues
« on: March 14, 2002, 11:42:11 PM »
I enjoy reading the fashion notes, and very much enjoyed reading Luciaphil's idle thoughts.  I agree, this story (which I think is one of the tightest - not much meandering and not many outrageous inconsistencies as some others - the series did) IS like a Greek/family tragedy.

All the best to Patti and son!  Congratulations!

As far as love matches on Dark Shadows, Chris and Sabrina would have to qualify.  I mean, she knew he was a werewolf and she still stayed with him.   Talk about standing by your man!  Or man/animal.

I came across this story and had wondered if it was true or just some type of urban legend thing.  Sadly, your post cofirms it actually happened.  I came across yet another story about a teacher somewhere that wanted to take puppies from the pound and feed them to a snake (boa I think) in the classroom!  What this was supposed to "teach" I have no idea.

Sorry to hear about your mother Gerard.  My own passed away more than ten years ago, but I still think about her and wish she were here to share things with.  Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I remember the first time I saw this story being rather upset about things. Where's Elizabeth, Roger, Julia, etc. I kept asking. It took me a while to get over the loss of the characters I'd become attached to, but it didn't take long to get involved with this story.

Oh those bureaucratic slip ups. There's some company that keeps listing me as being retired. If only!

Here's how I'd rank these (I haven't seen the pre-Barn episodes)
 • 1. Intro of Barn
 • 2. Intro of Quentin
 • 3. 1795
 • 4. 1897
 • 5. Jason's blackmail
 • 6. 1840
 • 7. 1970 PT
 • 8. 1841 PT
 • 9. Adam
 • 10. Dream Curse
 • 11. Leviathans
 • 12. Nicholas Blair
I loved 1897, but after a strong story felt it kind of trailed off at the end and things went too abrubtly into the Leviathan. One thing about DS, in every story there's something to enjoy, I loved watching Bruno play the piano in 1970 PT with his head rocking back and forth.

Those scenes are really something. There's one scene (and I can't remember exactly how it goes) but
Roger's name comes up and Julia dissolves into a mixture of laughter, tears and hysteria over the name Roger.
It really is a rather unsettling time for poor Julia. I geuss if they DO a remake of the series and repeat this story they'll have the good doctor reading Smart Women, Foolish Choices. BTW, watching the Olympic figure skating and seeing all that goes on in the kiss and cry I keep thinking Julia should be standing by with her sedatives.
Also in the 1995 story, when Julia is beginning to feel possessed by Gerard, she tells Barnabas to go on without her. He refuses and tells her "Never without you." I thought some of the scenes between Julia and Barnabas during that story were the most poignant and best acted of the series.

Some other scenes I thought very poignant were when Quentin's ghost drives everyone out of the house. Louis Edmonds and Joan Bennett have a wonderful scene as they leave the house together and then the episode ends with the camera panning around the empty house.
Re strangling Julia, Grayson Hall should have gotten combat pay. In 1897, Magda is manhandled a great deal as well - Quentin is always grabbing her and I think she gets slapped pretty hard by Aristede.

Barnabas was a MAJOR SOB during this part of the story - anyone who gave him the slightest amount of trouble was a candidate for offing. Maggie's memory is returning, she's got to go. Willie might come out of his coma and start talking, let's get rid of him. David is (well, I can kind of understand Barnabas here, if some brat was constantly climbing in my window and snooping in the basement I'd get a little ticked too) And now he finally carries through and kills Dr. Woodard. AND his cruelty towards poor Julia gets even worse in the episodes to come. AND....
In a really low moment when he needs some fresh blood to overcome the rapid aging, he can't bring himself to bite Victoria but has no compunction in dining out on Carolyn.
BTW, I do wish Julia had fashioned a stake and started waving it around Barnabas to keep him in line.

I think the idea of DS thirty years on instead of retelling the story is a GREAT idea as is bringing back some of the previous characters. I imagine David is now master of Collinwod with children of his own. What would Quentin be up to, and I imagine if Amy has any children, a son might be getting close to werewolf age.

I was just wondering today why they had to put Willie in an oxygen tent. Was that standard practice for coma patients?? Or were we just more naive then?
