Heart-on-her-sleeve, gasping and straightforwardly panicky and sympathetic Julia is foreign to me.  For me, she was the smart, nervy, cool, calculating (in a good cause) woman we see her as, in this episode.

Sometimes I wish I had watched the show when it originally aired in the late 1960s and I was young and in desperate need of positive female role models. But better late than never! And it's always wonderful to see an older woman portrayed as not just smart, nervy, etc., but also capable of great love and, yes, desire.

Quote
I wonder if Grayson mis-played the end though, over-emphasizing any confusion on Julia's part about Nick's remark about her courage in coming there.

Maybe now that the conversation is pretty much done, she couldn't help it when reaction set it. Even our formidable Julia would have some qualms about sparring with the Devil.

How many useless, obsolete structures are placed along that brief walk through the woods, anyway?

It's strange and awkward, Julia's cliffhanger statement indicating she's just seen "Angelique Collins!"   This is her first glimpse of her as Angelique ever, so something like "It's Angelique!  From the painting!" might have been appropriate...

True, but by now Barnabas has finally told her the entire story of his dreadful past, and she already may consider Angelique her rival, which might make her more likely to think of her as Angelique Collins.

Welcome back, Gothick! I don't imagine your cruise included Martinique! ;)

And thanks again to MB for doing all this work. I never got to see this pilot, so I can only sigh over what might have been. But at least now I'll be able to do it somewhat intelligently.

Julia is horrified that the vampire is Cassangelique. After a moment's panic, she gets hold of herself and enters the House by the Sea. She meets Adam, who is obviously sick and weak. Finally he convinces her that Barnabas isn't in the house and begs her to help them both. She hurries away.

Vicki returns to Barnabas and gives him a big gold cross. She still wants to get Julia, but he tells her, I don’t need Julia. I need no one but you and nothing but this. Clutching the cross, he finally relaxes into sleep.

Offscreen, Angelique has returned to the hut and discovered Barnabas missing. Out in the woods, she actually frets about what Nicholas will do to her. She sends her call to Barn, but armed with the cross, he is able to resist. Finally she returns to the House by the Sea and uses the magic mirror to locate him, shrinking back from even the reflection of the cross. Telling Adam that Barn wants to kill Eve, she convinces him to go and take the cross.

Barn still resists Angelique's call. No, no, don't let her come! he cries out and wakes up. Vicki asks who is frightening him, but he replies, No one. She decides to find Julia. Once she leaves, Adam gets the cross from Barnabas as easily as taking candy from a baby. He brings the cross to Angelique but is surprised when she flinches from it. Keep it away from me! she tells him and runs out.

Meanwhile, Vicki finds Julia at the Old House. Julia grabs her doctor's bag and they both race back to Collinwood. But they are already too late. Angelique calls the disarmed Barnabas again, and he staggers out of the room to obey.

Vicki warns Julia that Barn doesn't want any help. I'll deal with him, she says through gritted teeth, but they are both dismayed when they find the room empty.

I'll be the first (or among the first) to complain that this whole Ange-Barn thing is taking much too long, but then we wouldn't have this scene: Why did you leave the hut? Angelique asks Barnabas. Why didn’t you stay there? I couldn’t, Barnabas answers. You should have known I would find you, she scolds him. And send Adam to steal my cross! he retorts. It was necessary, Angelique answers. Necessary if I am to die--don’t you think I know that? Barnabas says bitterly. Angelique observes, And yet you come to me. As he sinks down onto a convenient rock, Barnabas asks with some wonder, What is this power of yours? Once I had it too. Once others felt drawn to me as I am to you now. Did I understand then, the feelings, the regret, the hatred that I feel now? You feel hatred for me? Angelique asks. You’re going to kill me tonight, Barnabas tells her rather than asking. Angelique agrees. You never gave up, did you? Barnabas realizes. I have loved you for so long, Angelique tells him, and now at last you need me as I have needed you. We will have eternity together. Eternity, Barnabas echoes bitterly: We’ll have our nights, both of us, and our days will be spent in coffins. That’s how we will be together--if Nicholas will even permit it. He will come to our coffins with a hatchet [what he says!] and a stake. When I die, Adam will die, he reminds her. Did you know that? I don’t care about Adam, Angelique retorts. Nicholas will, Barnabas points out. Are you afraid of Nicholas? Angelique asks. You should be too, Barnabas warns her, but she’s unconcerned. Nicholas wants to become human, she says scornfully. He is becoming more like a mortal man every day--and no mortal man can stop me. Finally Angelique has had enough talking. Come to me, she orders Barnabas. Come to me now. Let us start our journey together. His body cannot refuse her command. He approaches her, his eyes full of despair.

Vicki wants to organize the whole family to look for Barnabas, but Julia insists on getting only Willie. Vicki is also full of questions, which Julia promises to answer--AFTER they've found Barn. She explains that he would be embarrassed if everyone knew how sick he is. Vicki resigns herself and decides to search the Great House.

In her feral state, Angelique has no regard for privacy or comfort. Kneeling on the ground beside Barnabas, she has finished what she thinks was her final feeding. As she lifts her head from Barnabas’s throat, her lips stained with his blood, she looks ecstatic. I’m dying, Barnabas moans. Raising his head, she murmurs, Don’t be afraid, Barnabas. Barnabas faintly calls Vicki’s name despite Angelique’s mild annoyance. Don’t think of her, she says irritably. I love her, he protests faintly, thus sealing Vicki’s doom for sure if he hadn’t already. Soon you will love only me--now and forever, Angelique promises. The Collinwood rooster sounds its warning. Her face full of hope, Angelique tells Barnabas, I must leave now, but I will return at dusk. They will find your body here. And then your spirit will meet with mine, and we will be together, never to be parted--forever. Forever, Barnabas echoes--in despair....

Vicki is so upset when she finds Barnabas that her hairstyle has changed since the end of the previous episode. She hides him in Adam's old room at Collinwood.

Julia visits Joe in the hospital and tries to get him to name the vampire, even though she knows very well that he can't. When she tells him that she's going to see Nicholas, he urgently warns her to stay away. This is all the information she needs.

We get a wonderful duel between the Doctor and the Devil as Julia confronts Nicholas. He claims (truthfully this time, at least) that he doesn't know where Barnabas is. Julia knows Nicholas has plans for Adam and reminds him that in order for those plans to succeed, Adam has to remain alive and healthy--and therefore so must Barnabas. Nicholas can't help glancing out the window at the approaching dusk. He tries to get Julia to leave, claiming he's got a lot to do. Yes, Julia answers sarcastically as she too glances out the window. I see you’re worried it will be dark soon. Nicholas’s fake smile dies as he warns her, Don't try my patience, Doctor. Don't do it. (HAA is great here!) Is Barnabas in this house? Julia demands. He is _not_, Nicholas tells her emphatically. Do you know where he is? Julia asks. I haven't the vaguest idea, he replies. Julia suggests, It would be to our mutual advantage to find out. Through gritted teeth, he replies, I will do everything I possibly can to help you, Doctor. Good day. With a sudden change of manner, he takes all the wind out of her sails by telling her, Dr. Hoffman, I really have to admire you for coming here today. What do you mean? she stammers, for once caught off guard. You know perfectly well why, he answers very quietly. With a smile, he sees her to the front door. Julia gives him a look of complete understanding, then walks out. (The set behind her is black, even though it’s not yet dark.) He stands by the door, very angry.

Although the art card of the House by the Sea shows nothing growing anywhere near it, Julia walks through the woods. Julia thinks to herself that Nicholas must know where Barn is--or does he? She thinks Nicholas will take some kind of action after sunset. She finds a convenient tree to hide behind, pulls up her collar against the cold, and prepares to wait.

Vicki tries to get Barn to tell her what happened to him, but he mutters that it's too horrible and begs her to get him a cross. Very unhappy at leaving him, she goes to find one.

When Angelique awakes, Nicholas is angry enough to slap her. Once again he tells her to stay away from Barnabas. Nicholas orders her to get Barnabas back to the Old House--and to be back before he (N.) returns. If you don’t obey me, I will deny you your coffin, he warns her. Where are you going? she asks angrily. To see Maggie Evans, he replies, and I’m even angrier now because you’ve made me late. Angelique observes bitterly, When it comes to your own interests, you do very well, don’t you? That’s one of the advantages of being the master, he answers as he jauntily walks out.

Julia's perseverance has paid off. She watches as Nicholas leaves the house, humming a tune. Luckily Julia waits before going into the house herself, because a moment later, she sees sees a woman come out; she has to hide behind a tree as the woman walks right by her. Julia almost gives herself away with shock as she recognizes the vampire....

Thanks, dom! *blush*

The Robservation for this episode says "Abandoned hut near the sea." But it must be a very upscale hut, because in the DS Wiki slideshow you can see that it has walls of brick and stone.

Roger tells Vicki about his nightmare and insists that marrying Jeff would be the most tragic mistake of her life. But he can't explain why. This only makes Vicki angry and she stomps off to bed.

Julia returns and finds Roger consoling himself with a brandy. Tearfully she tells him that Barnabas is missing.

Meanwhile, Angelique has brought Barn to a hut near the sea. She reminds him of those nights in Martinique. I made no pledge! Barn insists. Some pledges are not made in words, she replies calmly. He warns her that Nicholas will find out. Nicholas is too busy with his own-- involvements, she replies without concern. In a few days, all my preparations will be made. Horror floods Barnabas as he realizes, You want to make me like you! Yes, Angelique replies, because that way we can be together for all eternity. Still resourceful, Barnabas warns her, You’ve moved too quickly. You can’t afford to let me die now. You’re not going to die yet, Angelique assures him. I will if you don’t leave me, Barnabas insists. As if in answer to his hope, the Collinwood rooster begins crowing. Perhaps you’re right, Angelique concedes. I must be more careful. With bitter humor, Barnabas says, I hope I disappoint you and die before dawn. You won’t die this night, Angelique replies, or for a few more nights. But poor Barnabas is appalled when she says, I will leave you here, to rest during the day as I will rest. When it is night again, I will come back to you. Until tonight then, she says politely as she vanishes from sight.

Vicki comes downstairs in the morning and finds Julia still sitting in the drawing room (but wearing a different dress). Vicki sends Julia off to bed and promises to wake her if there's any news of Barn.

As soon as Angelique vanishes, Barnabas starts wondering who can help him. He rules out Julia and Willie because he's sure Angelique will think of them too--then he decides on Vicki. Just the thought of Vicki gives Barnabas the strength to get to his feet and open the door to his prison, but he cowers away from the bright sunlight. He begins to call to Vicki, wrapping his cravat loosely around his neck to cover his shame. Just saying her name gives him the strength to move into the daylight.

Roger comes downstairs and apologizes profusely to Vicki. Eventually she accepts his apology.

Meanwhile, Barnabas has reached the cool shade of the woods. He renews his call to Vicki, clutching desperately at a tree to keep himself on his feet.

While still speaking with Roger, Vicki suddenly grows abstracted. She goes out to the foyer to stand in front of the portrait of Barnabas. Somehow his call has reached her, and she senses he is in danger. She tells Roger, I have to go to the Old House--I’ll be back soon. She hurries out. While walking through the woods, she hears a faint groan and finds Barnabas where he has collapsed on the ground. Vicki, he murmurs, you heard my call...but it’s too late...too late... He loses consciousness with these last words.

After Jeff gets Vicki to agree to get married within a month, Vicki tells Elizabeth her news and we have another lovely mother-daughter scene. Elizabeth is overjoyed and asks Vicki to let her help with the wedding plans: Vicki asks Elizabeth to be her matron of honor, and Elizabeth agrees. I refuse to be gloomy, Elizabeth says. We have so many plans to make! They hold each other’s hands fondly as Elizabeth assures her, It will be all smiles and cheers. You’ll be married right here in the drawing room, filled with candles and flowers! Can’t you see it? she asks, almost as if they are truly mother and daughter. I can, Vicki replies, her eyes aglow. Will you let Roger give you away? Elizabeth asks. I wonder if he’d like it, Vicki replies uncertainly. He would be delighted, Elizabeth assures her. I can see him coming down the stairs, a little pompous, maybe, but proud, with you on his arm, looking radiant in a long white gown and veil. Jeff will be waiting before the fireplace. I can hardly believe it, Vicki exclaims. Elizabeth continues, You’ll come into the room, lift your veil--and be so radiant! Vicki is happy to see Elizabeth so happy, and Elizabeth is grateful for at least these few moments’ distraction.

Unfortunately, Eve has seen Vicki and Jeff together on the terrace and now steps into view just as Jeff is about to leave. The fountain suddenly pops on! Just as Eve wraps herself around Jeff, Roger arrives. Eve runs off, and Roger is furious, especially when Jeff can't explain. But later, to spare Vicki's feelings, Roger makes up a story: I just went to the Old House, he says, but Barnabas wasn’t home. I had a moment of inexplicable hysteria (he pronounces it “high-steria”) at the thought that something might have happened to Barnabas. Eventually Vicki calms down and goes off to bed. Roger warns Jeff, who promises it will never happen again.

But later on, Roger has a nightmare about the wedding. [Tim Gordon--who played the hand of Barnabas when Willie opened the coffin--is ready and waiting to perform the ceremony.] But when Vicki lifts her veil, her pretty face has been transformed into a skull!

Great work by JF in the opening scenes. Julia and Willie are horrified when they discover his secret and take him to the very room in the basement where he held Maggie prisoner so long ago. He pleads with them to let him go but they are relentless, and finally, he resigns himself in shame. Julia asks him to name the vampire--I know it's a woman, she says. Willie intercedes and begs Julia to let Barnabas rest.

At the cottage, Nicholas has been waiting for Maggie to return home. She apologizes for forgetting that he was coming to see her. I would have waited indefinitely, just to see you, he replies. He expresses crocodile sympathy for poor, dead Joe--and then Maggie shocks him by telling him that Joe is alive, though obviously deranged. He tried to murder the man who saved his life. Why did Joe do those things? she wonders. Poor fellow--he must have been delirious, Nicholas replies, adding  dryly, When a woman has a man in her power, there’s no telling what he’ll do. She insists on going to see Barnabas to make sure he’s all right, even though she says she’s through worrying about Joe. Of course Nicholas would much rather spend a quiet evening à deux, but he gallantly tells her, I am yours to command.

But at the Old House, Julia tells Maggie that Barnabas cannot be disturbed.

Willie hangs a cross on the inside of the cell door while Barnabas stares at him. Don’t look at me like that, Willie pleads. Say something! Anything! But Barnabas remains silent as the dogs howl far off. Willie tells Barnabas, I hear the dogs too. I know what you must be going through. I’ve got to keep you here, safe! As your master I cannot command you now, but I beg you. Barnabas, please don’t, Willie begs him: Believe me, if I could, I’d be happy to do your will, but I can’t. Barnabas tries again: Listen to them howling--but the true howling is in my blood, tearing at my heart. Please, Willie, please! No, Willie replies. (JF is fabulous here!)

Still unnerved by the dogs, Julia changes her story to say that Barnabas has gone out. Maggie is extremely annoyed at this obvious untruth.

Barnabas remembers that long ago Maggie (thanks to Sarah) found the loose brick that opens the secret passage. He asks Willie to get him some water. When Willie turns to leave, Barnabas hits him over the head with a convenient empty bottle, finds the brick, and opens the passageway.

Nicholas finally gets Maggie to leave when Julia assures her that Barnabas is getting “exactly the care he needs.”

As Barnabas prepares to climb out through the passageway, he turns to address the unconscious Willie: I said you were my friend. How I wish that were the truth. But I am past the point where friends are possible. I’m sorry, Willie.

A moment later, Julia returns to find the cell minus one occupant....

I seem to remember a long gap until Sheriff Davenport arrives. But I'm not sure.

Do we know that Willie was in the room behind the fireplace the whole time? He could have been cleaning Josette's room or something. In the next episode
he seems just as shocked as Julia when she discovers the truth.
Yep, Alfred Sandor is the fourth and last iteration of Sheriff George Patterson.

Julia hurries to the Old House and finds Barnabas looking not too much the worse for wear, but sporting an ascot once more (she still doesn’t get it). He claims he didn’t know a thing about the poison and adamantly refuses to let her examine him. He tries to talk her into sedating Joe to keep him from talking when she goes to the hospital. Julia says point blank, Suddenly you seem to be protecting the vampire--why? Barnabas huffs, I’m doing no such thing. Julia stalks out without another word.

Close to sunset, the sheriff arrives at the Old House and questions Barnabas, who becomes distracted when the dogs begin to howl. Eventually the sheriff gives up but promises to return. The sheriff meets Julia on her way back to the Old House. He tells her about Barnabas’s weird behavior: It was as if the dogs terrified him, or as if he was suddenly taken ill: It was as if the sound of the dogs changed him completely, the sheriff says. A hundred nagging hints suddenly coalesce into a horrible suspicion in Julia’s mind.

Angelique materializes at the Old House, furious that Barn has resisted her and that Joe is in the hospital and under guard. How dare you disobey me! she snarls, then sinks her fangs into Barn's throat.

Julia approaches the Old House. Not wanting her suspicion to be confirmed, she hesitates for a long moment before going inside, thus giving Angelique the opportunity to gloat that soon Barnabas will be with her for all eternity.

Julia enters the Old House and sees Barnabas half sitting, half lying in the chair. Don’t come near me, he says weakly. What’s wrong? she cries in alarm. Near the end of his strength, he can pretend no longer. Nothing, he sighs, nothing you can do anything about. As his head sags to one side, she hurries over to him. She undoes the scarf around his neck. One look confirms all her worst fears. She gasps in horror at the dripping wounds on his throat. Barnabas! she cries. Oh, Barnabas!...

Mrs. J, of all people, rescues Barnabas from Joe. Afterward, Joe wanders disconsolately around the woods, still in his cut-open turtleneck and five o’clock shadow, and looking quite fetching, I must say.

Roger finally convinces Elizabeth to let him arrange a resting place for her in "Old Joshua"'s mausoleum.  When Elizabeth and Roger get to Eagle Hill, Elizabeth looks around fearfully. She tells Roger, The dead walk here. The spirits are watching us. They envy us--they hate us because we are alive. I hear the groans of our ancestors, jealous of the living and frustrated by their own unfulfilled lives. She notes the tomb of Jonah Collins, who died in 1862 at the age of 23 (in the Civil War, I suppose), but that is all we will ever learn about him, maybe because Joe, who was hiding in the corner of the mausoleum, collapses at their feet.

At Collinwood, Mrs. Johnson tells Harry (whom she once lectured about not being allowed in the front of the house, but she herself enters through the front door) about Joe’s attack. I just can’t figure out people anymore, she sighs. It’s as though everyone has lost control of his senses, even a sane man like Mr. Barnabas. I just hope I never have to go through a day like this again, she tells her son. Harry flips out at this news because obviously Joe is supposed to be dead--not that Harry regrets escaping being an accessory to murder, mind you. His comments immediately make his mother suspect that he knows more than he’s telling, but she can’t get anything useful out of him. However, he does keep her from calling the sheriff by pressing down the switchhook and arguing with her.

When Julia arrives at Collinwood, Mrs. Johnson tells her about Joe’s dreadful behavior. She also mentions (again) how Harry found Mr. Barnabas unconscious in the woods the night before, and how Barnabas refused all medical attention, even from Julia. Julia barely has time to register all this before Elizabeth and Roger come back, with Roger supporting Joe. While they settle Joe on the couch in the drawing room, he raves, I have to kill him! I have to kill him! For about the eightieth time, poor Mrs. Johnson now has to tell them about how Joe tried to kill Barnabas.

Harry might have stopped his mother, but of course he can do nothing to prevent Roger from calling the police.....
