I had the opportunity to see Selby last year at the Hartford Stage when he performed "St. Nicholas". A superb performance, and a truly gracious man. I also purchased his book of poetry "My Mother's Autumn" that night. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! I found it to be a very touching account of a son's soul searching over his mother's death. When I saw him again at the fest, he seemed genuinely pleased that I enjoyed the book.
I have never particularly been a Selby fan in the past, but that is changing fast, lol. A real class act.

Okay barney lay off the chick she KNOWS you can kill her. .
I haven't read this whole thread, and maybe someone's said this already...but as to the whole reason *why* Julia puts up with this from Barn...although it certainly isn't the type of response she'd like from him, at least he is not ignoring her. Perhaps a little negative attention is better than none at all?
Kind of sad, and maybe I read too much into Julia's character, but I'd hope she'd have more self respect than that. Oh well, it is fun to watch the dymanics, though...

I wonder if they made it that phony on purpose to give the audience a good laugh.

Probably not (intentionally, anyway). Of course, it has to be kept in mind that this was the 1960's, and some of the DS "special effects" really weren't any worse than, say, the Twilight Zone or other shows of that era. Still, I agree, they do make one cringe, lol. I always thought that bat was the absolute worst until the
Leviathan storyline and that ridiculous shadow that Chris Pennock was always running from. That gets my vote for the worst DS special effect.
MrsJ, I didn't mean to make it sound like I doubted your memory and I'm sorry if my response came off that way.

Not at all :-) I just remember visiting my grandfather in the hospital, and his roommate was in one of those oxygen tents. One of his visitors was smoking, and I remember him emptying the ashtray into the garbage can (right next to me!) I guess I should be grateful that he put it out, lol.

Also what was the story about smoking in a hospital room? I can't believe even in the 60th's it was permitted in the hospital. Shocked me when Julia lit up.

I must be really old, because I remember the days when smoking in a patient's hospital room (even one with an oxygen tent) wasn't given a second thought. It wasn't unusual for your doctor to light up when you went to his office for a checkup, either. It does look odd nowadays, but Julia really wasn't so different from most doctors of that era. Another issue comes to mind...I am the first to snicker at how quickly Julia passes out the old sedatives...but that also was common practice among many, many doctors of the 60's and 70's. Anyone remember the Rolling Stones song "Mother's Little Helper"??

I really can't figure out why David is so afraid of Barnabas and apparently so suspicious.

Coming from one who works with children on a daily basis...I'd have to say (IMO) the reason is because kids are *extremely* perceptive. They are very keen at reading body language, facial expressions, etc. They trust their instincts much more than adults do, and are generally harder to fool.

The argument that there is no logical reason for David to be fearful or suspicious is quite valid...enough to fool the adults who are preoccupied with other matters, but not dear David! This is one of the many circumstances in which David proves he's got more sense than the rest of the adults put together, lol.

I am not referring to these episodes, but later on, say 1969 or 1970. Would they have tried to destroy Barnabas or try to help him? Given that they would have known him for a few years, I doubt they would have tried to destroy him as he so feared.

That's also what I would have thought, but according to Sam Hall's article outlining the plot to the end of the series...Barnabas' American cousins were not so understanding. Roger, in fact, would have attempted to kill Barnabas (to end his suffering ostensibly) and in the process is himself killed (by Angelique I believe). I guess she comes back from the dead, too, but my memory may be faulty. I'll have to find that article and read it again. In any case, the family opted to do away with Barnabas rather than protect him. Rather disappointing, I thought, but it was supposedly a way to write Louis Edmonds out of the show (per his request). Lots of loose ends were scheduled to be tied up, too bad we never got to see it.

I must admit I would appreciate this dark version of Barnabas a lot more if he wasn't so stupid!

LOL! It's too bad, but they really didn't make him any more "insightful" as time went on, either.

For one thing, if Sarah was such a little angel who loved him SO MUCH and would NEVER betray him, then why does he instantly conclude that she told David about him?

Because he is paranoid (not that he doesn't have the right to be). So many opportunities for character development nixed in favor of plot advancement...and not just in Barnabas' case. Julia is another prime example (where did she come from, and why in Heaven's name did she fall for someone who treats her like dirt?) Roger, too, (IMO) had a great deal of untapped potential (why does he always fall for the "wrong"
woman (lol), how does he deal with being under big sister's thumb all of his life, and why is he closer to his niece than he is to his own son?)
