Hallmark has some good stuff with reruns of classic TV shows.  And then it makes these schmaltzy movies about he-doesn't-love-her-and-she doesn't-love-him-but-then-he-loves-her-and-she-loves-him tripe.  If Hallmark makes it, ignore it.

Megan:  "So think about it.  We do this Leviathan thing.  Hideous creatures from prehistoric times take over the world and destroy the human race, blah-blah-blah.  Meanwhile, we clean up and move to a condo in Boca."

Megan:  "I had this weird dream.  It was in the future.  People were able to buy and sell all this junk by using typewriters connected to TV screens.  Crazy, isn't it?  It's so science-fiction."

I've got cable, Patti, so I'm not familiar with all the satellite companies, but I heard that Dish is among the worst.  It gets in battles with channels and networks and then dumps them off.  It got into a big hellabaloo when it got into a war with AMC and dropped it.  Of course, The Walking Dead was an AMC show, the highest rated cable/satellite show on TV, and customers went ballistic and Dish lost over a million customers.

I don't know when food began to be put in cans, but it before assembly lines.

Being a historian, Magnus, I'd have to do some research since I don't exactly remember, but I think canned food was invented during the Civil War to provide Union troops with sustenance that wouldn't go bad while on the battle field.  From what I recall, that led to the invention of the can-opener because there was no way to open the things.  It's interesting the wars have led to the discovery of many of the things we commonly use today.

There must be a weird Collins Curse in Collinsport.  During summer, people wore coats; during winter, people walked around outside in sleeveless dresses.  And, as MB stated, never a flake of snow.  Lots of thunderstorms, but no snow.

I so agree with you, MB, on the Stanley Kubrick version of The Shining.  What a disappointment.  It had its wonderful moments (thanks to Nicholson), but it was a typical, Kubrick mess.  The '97 made-for-TV mini-series was so much better (penned by King himself).  An interesting anecdote:  when Kubrick was making his version, one time, King recalled being up early in the morning and the phone rang.  He answered it.  The caller asked:  "Is this Stephen King?'  He answered:  "Yes."  "This is Stanley Kubrick.  Do you believe in god?"  Still shaving and taken off guard, King answered:  "Um, I guess so."  Kubrick responded:  "Okay," and hung up.  Then, with shaving creme on his face, King thought:  "What is he doing to my book?"  When he saw the final product he was not pleased, although he later admitted it "grew" on him.  As much as I hated Kubrick's adaption (I hate virtually everything he has done), I will, again, admit, it does have its moments but only because of the performers.  Heeeerrreee's Johnny!

If you get a chance, MB, read Staub's novel.  It's wonderful.  Well, it begins slow, plods along slow, buy half-way through you can't put it down.  Just keep at it and it'll become a roller-coaster ride.  The cinematic version was so awful; such a waste of great movie stars.  They deserved better in what should've been a great cinematic version of a great novel.

Kudos to John Karlen and his optimistic attitude!  He will be at the 50th anniversary celebration with bells on!  I remember him from my one and only quick attendance at a festival (2003) and he was an incredibly vibrant and funny guy.  During a Q&A session, he was asked about how actors/actresses were treated regarding things like contracts and all that.  He responded that basically his "contract" consisted of a "hand-shake and a buck" from Dan Curtis that allowed him to not only do the show, but to depart (by killing off his character or sending it away) to do other things and then come back and earn a continuous income.

Actually, Ghost Story was not made for TV; it was a big-screen adaptation of the novel by Peter Straub.  The novel was very creepy and Stephen Kingish.  And in the novel, the creature haunting the main characters was not a ghost but a supernatural creature.  The cinematic version turned it into a ghost and, despite having iconic movie stars (like Fred Astaire and others) in it, it was a critical flop.  When I saw it after reading the novel, I was not impressed.
